I have often heard the fact that voting is the most important right of Americans, but it is not. The most important rights are those that should not be touched, such as the right to you own life, liberty, and property without the interference of government coercion. America is not a democracy, and for good reason,. We are a constitutional republic, where limits were supposed to be put on the power of voting. It is because of the democratic part of our government that we have drug laws, etc. Voting in America was supposed to be a check on the power of government, but over time has turned into mob rule. Don't shout "Vote or shut up" when no vote should need to be taken to protect your freedoms. If you really want to make a difference practice civil disobedience and try to change the minds of those around you as to why what they support is MORALLY wrong, and not just "their view on things." The second you impose your will on someone else you are commiting an immoral action, but most people don't understand that they must make sure they don't support unjust causes.
That said, I vote in every election of any importance. I vote libertarian by party and with a libertarian view on issues. I would like to think that the libertarian party could become a viable national 3rd party, but I doubt it. It is too weak and lacks strength at its base. It is still the most popular third party, and if it can't make a go out of it I doubt any one issue parties like the green party can.

HI Evolving, find an almanac and find out how many peo-le voted for Lincoln for President and how many voted for the Democrats and how many were Whigs and Toreys and then compare that to Bush, Gore and Nadars very small third party tallies.
mj
That vote would be interesting to see.

I might also add that during the time of Lincoln politcal parties were not nerely as powerful as they are today. Also Lincoln was a whig, and the republican party as a whole absorbed many of the whig party members. In that aspect, it was not a grass roots third party that gained power, but merely a drastic shift in power that destroyed several other national parties in the process.
The events leading to Lincoln's place in history and the birth of the republican party are very complex, but this was also a time of a growing gap in the north/south cultures that would lead to war. It's funny that people talk about how Bush had less than a majority in the popular vote, yet Lincoln(who is considered one of our better presidents, maybe unfairly) didn't even have close to a majority popular vote. (disclaimer is that he wasn't even on the ballot in several southern states)

I understand your view John but I disagree.
I am sorry to hear you will be leaving us because President Bush will undoubtedly be re-elected.
By the time his re-election takes place most states will have electronic voting. Florida will not happen again. There will be no arguing over chads this time. Electronic voting probably means Bush and company really plan on stealing this next one.
May the Shrooms find you wherever you are!

"They" didn't try to steal the last one, why would they try the next time since they'll win fair and square like the last time.

Wow, that's really depressing to think about Bush getting re-elected, because I too, am sure he will be re-elected. It's really surprising how high his approval ratings are, especially when you consider he has not done a goddamn thing but make a major ass out of himself everytime he opens his goddamn stupid mouth. Maybe it isn't too surprising... I mean he hasn't done anything I haven't predicted he'd do. The economy is in the toilet, we're at war, and he still manages to make a complete ass out of himself every time he tries to make a statement. I guess he's what America wants--a fuck-up. He represents his country well.
But in this world of shit-ass politics I still have hopes and dreams, and probably a lot of ignorance. So I will vote at the next election (it'll be the first election I'm old enough to vote at) and just hope for the best. I have no idea who I'll vote for, I don't follow politics too closely, everybody is so fucking fake, politicians will say any goddamn thing for a vote. But I will vote, so that I can kill you, Stonedfish, and not feel guilty.

I'm not saying that Bush and Co. did steal the last election, but what makes you so absolutely sure that they didn't?

1. They played by the rules of the game. 2. The Gore team tried to change the rules midstream. 3. All recounts done after the election with the exception of one, still showed Bush as the winner. This includes the recounts requested by the Gore team. 4. The Democrats are the kings of vote fraud.

that is so fucking stupid man, I am so sick of people saying "You should vote no matter what blah blah blah...."
That is what causes the problems in america today.
If you are not educated on the issue you should not vote on it! Nowadays people just vote their party lines, no matter what, and people that actully DO educate themselves and actully DO care about the subject vote's are rendered useless by the millions and millions of people who vote mindlessly.
People who push the "its not right to not vote!" are runing america, whats the point of a vote if you dont beleive in it?
it should be "vote only if you know what the fuck you are votting for."

Then only vote on the issues you know. If you read my second post, this frustration stems from the hundreds if not thousands of stoners who don't vote for anti-WOD candidates or don't show up when a medicinal marijuana bill comes up. You know what? I don't smoke, and if I'm the only one fighting for legalization, maybe I should just give up and let the bitchy stoners wallow in their own laziness and piss on themselves for fear of authority.

Thats what I am saying, people should only vote for things they know, but with the whole "vote or your unpatroitic" thing makes people think they have to vote, even if they have no idea.

Actually, the point was people SHOULD have some idea, and the wish to actually do something instead of just bitch.

so do you feel that if you don't vote on something that you have a right to bitch about it? (i know you have a right but in the context of general disscussion)
