Holy shit, you just reminded me of this really early childhood memory that I haven't thought about in a long time.

I was waking up in my mom's bed, only it was apparently my grandmother with me instead of my mom. I pointed out the fact in some way I don't remember and she insisted that she was my mom, and then I didn't know what to say to that. But I wasn't scared at all. Then I guess I went back to sleep and woke up later and no one was in the bed. So I got up and told my mom that I had woken up with grandma in bed instead of her and so she told me there was no way that could have happened. She told it me it had to have been a dream but I had trouble accepting that because the experience was so vivid and I didn't feel like I was dreaming.

Now a couple years ago I had this experience sleeping on a fishing boat where I was laying in bed with my eyes open, half-asleep. At some point I realized I was sleep paralyzed after I heard this really really big beat in my head. I was scared it was my heart at first but there's no way it could have been my heart because it was WAY too loud and there's was kind of a couple seconds of rumbling building up to when it went 'BOOM' really loud. It happened twice before I woke up and after I did I immediately decided I better get out of bed to make sure everything was alright. So I remember getting out, talking to everyone in the cabin for a while and went to sleep -- only when I got back in bed I realized that I had never left bed, I was just dreaming it very vividly with my eyes still open. I guess this is pretty much the experience astral projection describes.

Recalling these two memories together now, it makes so much sense that in that old memory I was in that same state. It's so weird that you described this exact situation though. Have you had this happen to you?
