Enlightenment is an unobtainable goal your ego dangles in front of you, to distract and oppress the mind!  For all I know being enlightened means your book is selling well enough to afford all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll the ego can consume!

I think enlightenment is like this:

1. You see that your subjective feelings distort your vision of reality.

2. You find a way to see objectively, free from all fear and desires from the past and of the future.

you mean without fear and desire you wouldn't be motivated to eat?

I guess the answer to that is that there is a basic goodness that is seperate from fear desire and good bad. For example eating good healthy food is different from gorging on doughnuts for pleasure.

so i guess its that desire for pleasure that I am talking about, or even the desire for basic goodness if you think basic goodness will give you pleasure.

I'm sure you can tear this idea to pieces but if your looking to understand what it is people call enlightenment I think it is close to what I said, although I certainly don't get it.

Think you are on to something here. But if you think on that quote one might be convinced that enlightenment is basic animal behavior. The problem being then of course that violence is a big part of that. Then we are led to the possible conclusion that the search for enlightenment is an attempt to escape from life as it is.

true. I'll let you know all about it once I'm enlightened. But then I'll probably just say something like, "you don't gain anything in the end".

That's a good question. At times I think that it would not be possible for a human to reach enlightenment. Sure you learn and integrate awareness and cultivate wisdom. But enlightenment is such a subjective term. Its one of those terms that gets examined and dissected all over the ages by philosophers, sages and gurus. It would be impossible to measure all aspects of what enlightenment entails, I would think. Its like people who try to describe what/who God is. Perhaps wondering about it though, demeans the real meaning behind what Enlightenment should feel like. And perhaps its just well to be left alone to the individual to experience. And to go into whether or not it is apart of oneself already, seems to remain a mystery. I hear and read about so many people claiming to have reached enlightenment. But I wonder, If it is even possible to keep that level of consciousness active indefinite?

But perhaps there are walls that needed to be brought down before we just realize what we already have. Isn't it Buddha who says Those who let go; See clearly?

A basic concept of Buddhism is that buddha nature is inherent in all of us, that it is already there waiting to be found.

Everyone is already enlightened.  All it takes to know what it is, is to stop doing everything else.
