Free Will - What does it matter?
    #11067153 -

Joe Axe Murderer slaughters rural family.

Free Will Scenario: Joe had a choice and society applies appropriate justice by choosing to give JAM the electric chair.

No Free Will Scenario: Joe had no choice and was a product of his abusive parents. Society is also reactionary and has no choice but to go for revenge and gives JAM the electric chair.

Am I missing something?

It matters for aesthetics and interest not practicality.

Sounds about right, although Free will advocates will tell you that since there was the option of not committing murder that therefore free will exists.

Well the opposing views give me two different feelings of what life is. If free will exists, then we're active participants with real choices and the ability to be responsible and weigh what it is we're doing. If free will doesn't exist, then life is little more than a ride. Not a bad ride for me, but a shitty ride for some others.

Free will in what sense? are we discussing the idea that one's will is completely independent of the outside world? I mean, everyone's actions influence other people to a certain extent.

Ex. what food you buy depends on what the farmer decides to grow

Not in that sense for sure. I think we have a limited amount of choice and that's all. Probably less then we think.
