Marriage is successful to the extent that you can predict the changes that occur to you in the future, near or far.

This is very difficult and is something I will never be capable of doing, for more than 3-10 years at a time.

My Grandparents have been married 62 years. Lots of marriages end in shit, but it is worth it if you can find that one person you can last 62 years with. It's pretty astounding, actually.

I think the whole issue of failed marriages is a profound testament to our inability to predict significant events, even within our own lives.

While the whole institution of marriage seems strange to me, in that it involves a third party (the state), I am not necessarily opposed to marriage under more realistic terms. These include leaving out the whole bit of "till death to us part". I think human love is always conditional, and like most everything else, ephemeral. The institution of marriage needs to reflect the reality of this and be more flexible. It's outdated, for one thing, and imposes unrealistic ideals onto human nature.

The bit about soulmates seems equally dubious to me. We'll never know, but how many people who've "found their soulmate" have actually never even contemplated seeing/dating/fucking someone else? Regardless of how much you're into someone at first, they're going to "taste like chicken" after  the novelty wears off. I'm not saying that two people can't stay together their whole lives and be exclusive and happy. But I suspect it's rather rare, and past a certain length of time most people just settle for what they've got.

My absolute favorite episode of Cops was when the shirtless mostly toothless wife beater proclaimed "I Love U Bitch"

When the relationship fails, one always seems to mutter in a dejected voice, "I guess it wasn't true love..."

I don't really understand marriage. So two people who basically have a huge crush on each other decide to promise to live together and remain in an exclusive relationship for the rest of their lives? Why? Don't people understand that nothing lasts forever, and that romance eventually dies off in every relationship? How does one know how they would feel about their partner in 5 or 10 years? Why make such a huge commitment to something that one isn't even very sure about to begin with?

Methinks it's all about money! :uptosomething:

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”
