What IS love?

I was pondering today and came across the concept of love. What exactly IS love and how does someone know that they are "in love"? What does everyone think about it and do you think love truly exsists or is it as some people say, just an illusion. Are there different types of love and is it something that comes over time or can there be such a thing as love at first sight? Just interested on what people on here think.

Its a chemical reaction on the brain. Your brains perception will decide weather its love for a friend or love for a wife. Nothing more................ or is it???? Well thats the physical side of love, i wouldnt now if your a spiritual person then i guess you would find a spiritual connection also.

The spiritual aspect of love is that by connecting separate beings to each other it creates new and more complex patterns of existence.

You'll come to find that everything is an illusion, not just love..
Love is competely subjective, and there is no way to prove its existance (you can only see its footprints...). It is still entirely real, and love could unite us all.... Peace.

s f author robert heinlein has poked at that one a few times; one of his characters (jubal harshaw) came up with something like: love is that state in which the happiness & well-being of another is of greater importance than your own... (perhaps paraphrased a bit, but that's the gist of it, mmmkay??? ...and that definition may be pretty dam' close to the mark, for my money...)

Love is everything. Everything that we are composed of. It is an energy/ a vibration. There is only love and nothing else. Like light there is love and absence of love but love is the only true thing that exists.

Love is everything. Everything that we are composed of. Who is going to be the one to break this news to the physicists?
It is an energy/ a vibration. "She's giving me ex-ex-ex-ex-ci-tations!" Cool - a Beach Boys fan.
There is only love and nothing else. Like with Peterson and his wife...

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=love
I hate to give something like LOVE of all things such a clinical definition, but it's the only way you can define it, almost everyone has a different definition of love, so i'll just go by the dictionary definition.
but I feel that love just goes past all the material and carnal shit in the world, if you care about someone alot, and you can't figure out why... then THAT is love, when you care about someone for no logical reason. this is probably gonna come out all fucked up and not come off at all like I had planned it, so sorry.

There are many different types of love as well.
For instance the love for your brother, your pet, your lover, your car, etc..

There can be no one, real, concrete definition of love because it is perceived differently by each individual based on their own experiences and beliefs that culminate from those experiences. Can there be love at first sight? Well, there is certainly something to be said for the electrical charge that sparks within the brain to signal attraction to another person. But is that love? Good post, Tasty Smurf....food for thought to be sure.

""""Are there different types of love and is it something that comes over time or can there be such a thing as love at first sight? Just interested on what people on here think. """"
i beleive love & light are the closest energies we can comprehend to our source and our true selfs... I think that when we look for happiness in a woman it is not pure...for isnt she also seeking love from you? isnt that like two beggars?...I'm not saying there are no positive things out of relationships, for that is how children come to be and that love definitely has a pure origin...but I beleive true love is selfless and needs nothing
this spiritual love is the one thing you can give and no matter how much you give it will not diminish
we all want want want the love but when we count our blessings and realize we would not trade what we have currently for anything... perhaps then we can give to the world rather than take

What about hate? How is it related to love and is it possible to love and hate someone at the same time?

love is that state in which the happiness & well-being of another is of greater importance than your own...
I would change this to: love is that state in which the happiness & well-being of another appears to be of greater importance than your own...
Nit picking? Not at all. Your own self-interest is always first no matter the appearance. Why would I do almost anything to make my woman happy? Because then she will continue to fulfill my needs - simple as that. Why would a parent sacrifice everything for their child? Because of basic pre-programming.
