Of True Love, Wedding Vows and Soulmates
    #10745121 -

Seeing as how some 60+% of married people cheat on one another, most marriages end in divorce and the primary suspect in a murder is the spouse, what then is the purpose of the wedding vows? Who is fooling who? What and where are these mysterious soulmates?

When the relationship fails, one always seems to mutter in a dejected voice, "I guess it wasn't true love..."

How many of the people who get married think that they are marrying their soulmate? Without that bit of information your question is meaningless. It is imprecise balderdash.

You should see my own before and after.

Thank the gods (Thor and Odin) for wedding vows.

Staying married and happy is hard fucking work. That is the extent of it. I have done it, but there were many hard times. Now it is a breeze with the kids all raised and off to their own lives.

I contend that "true" love and / or "true" friendship is a popular social myth and is merely an ad hoc analysis.

My grandparents were married for 52 years and then got divorced. "I guess it wasn't true love then."

Should we stand by friends no matter what they do? Some 20 years ago, I had a friend who made a total ass of himself in a bar and got his butt kicked. I did nothing and watched as he brought it on himself. He was pissed at me and said that I was not a "true friend". -Swami 2004

This had me lolling.

Anyways
This is more of a cynical statement than an actual judgment on wedding vows and as such can't really receive a specific, topic-related response, but I will say that vows are more about exclaiming to one another that you care enough about the other to stick it out and work through your problems and try to be the best you can for each other. If it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out, but there's nothing wrong with exclaiming your feelings in the moment.

In other words, having felt it at one point doesn't guarantee that you will forever, and if you don't feel it forever it doesn't mean that it was a lie when you did. Vows let your partner know that you do feel that way, then and there, and you hope for it to last forever.

If I am understanding you correctly, it is OK to bang the hotel maid the day after your wedding when your wife is in the beauty salon. Am I close?

But he did stand by his friend. That is, stand by and did nothing. Wonder why he didn't join in with the butt kicking if he believed his friend was so deserving of it?

He was afraid he would get hurt so all he could do was yell "kick his ass" as his friend received his well deserved punishment for being an ass.  Oh and he did buy the victor a beer and one for his friends for a job well done.

I would answer this question first before I question marriage; should we work relationships out or should they work for us, or both. I like to simply work out my relationships, to a 50% lesser degree than how much they work for me.

Two problems occur in a relationship - miscommunication or people change. In the first problem you can change the relationship for the better. In the second, you could try to change the person or yourself, to be more compatible with that person. I would only do this if I didnt really care much for the changes that occured to me and if they dont change my life personally, to a large positive extent.
