If everyone were to become enlightened tommorow...

Everyone!

Another interesting question in the same vein is

would you still strive diligently if you were the last unenlightened being?

My body I will give to pleasures,

to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Why can't a garbage man be enlightened? You don't just stop working because you've reached enlightenment.

Who would drive the buses? Who would serve you a drink? There are far too many aspects of modern society that rely on fear(read; laziness). The very core of this society IMO requires bad emotion to function. Without these, i predict that society would be too motivated and as a result everyone would want to be top of their game, no one would except a repetetive job, but what would this mean for society?

modern society would probably crumble, and people would just be farmers and live the simple life. Society would probably go to the way it was pre-industrial revolution. Im guessing with enlightenment, there would be no violent crime and a tolerance for everybody? we wouldn't need cops anymore.

You think that if you had dealt with your fear then you would accept an unfulfilling job? would anyone screw up their exams?

If you describe enlightenment as some supernatural liberation from all constraining conditions, then if everyone became enlightened, perhaps there would be no more dualistic existence as we know it.  In that case, no one needed to pick up the trash.

If you describe it how Buddha described it, as the end of suffering, then people could still take repetitive jobs like collecting the trash.  The end of suffering implies a different psychological approach to conditions as they are, rather than different conditions entirely.  After all, monastics who strive for enlightenment do so in what is, superficially at least, a very repetitive and ritualistic manner.

I don't know there are some pretty unfulfilling jobs out there, i doubt the buddha would want them. I know if i conquered my fears (or started interpreting them differently) I would probably go a lot further than where i am now in terms of laziness.

:rofl2: Fucking halarious when you say it out loud.

Anyway picking up trash is a great aspect of Enlightenment. In fact when Buddha was once asked what the most holy activities someone could perform he replied.....

Carrying water and chopping wood which were basic chores back then

The idea of "trash" is in itself an irony...

Man created tools and objects from nature; wood, leaves, stone, etc...

Man found it quite annoying how these tools and objects decayed and eroded so fast...

So man began to create objects and tools that could not degrade and decay...

But now man must find a way to dispense with these once he has finished using them, and they no longer recombine with the organic matter laying around and will leave an unsightly mess on said man's property.

Human's are constantly trying to make EVERYTHING last forever, including ourselves.

stuff that lasts forever piles up

Summary: If everyone were enlightened, we'd have a gigglefest at the idea of a garbage man

If everyone was enlightened then everyone would kill themselves because the most ultimate state you can possibly achieve would be the norm and henceforth nobody would be enlightened (as enlightenment is relative to how unenlightened everyone else is), there would be no idiots to uplift and everybody wouldn't stop saying stupid poetic shit all the time.

We'd all poop outside and eat lawn and live like nature hippies and have sex all the time, and then a force entirely out of our control disregards how enlightened we all are and wipes us off the face of the earth.

Nature would be our garbageman, halting our garbage and eroding the remains over time.

I guess enlightenment then is some ideal for there and then and them others?  It also seems enlightenment is something materially available which could be expressed.

All I have to say is afaiac The Rolling Stones and Beatles were together enlightened.  I remember this song, "All you need is love."  Pretty enlightened.

However, nobody has defined an 'enlightenment' as a base standard. As some history students may recall some epocs already were names the 'Enlightenment' such as the Renaissance.

I think we should take cues from the past and consider that invention would become more accepted by all the present company of geniuses. However some countries were very not enlightened and they ritually sent their best and brightest to the gulag and prostituted the rest. Like Stalin playing deadly football with his officers in the snow.  This is how people viewed this planet, as their pigpen.

I think that would quickly change if people all awoke.  You know I watched Maharishi Mahesh Yogi strive to create a sustainable meditating community and it has fairly been dismantled most places.

This enlightened society has existed in certain places like Brazil for a term and Phoudhon, the Steiner people and some other Theosophists and still present masters strive to create sustainable health systems for staying feeling good. Norbu has his gars and many other teachers have communities.

But first one would need to agree to cooperate with each other recognizing the strengths of our differences and the unity of our commonness.  This sort of mutual recognition occurs but in strange places and dualistically coupled with some of the mosty horrific circumstances such as times of war. People bonding beyond the physical to become a milieu.

Or in communes sometimes none of which have 401 Ks and retirement which then becomes an issue if you're old. Of course a Logan's Runish 'enlightened' society might have no need for the old at all.

Before a pot of water boils it forms convection cells as hot comes to cold.  Before an enlightened world which in my basic terminology is where all respect each other spontaneously, in such a world one would first find convection cells of people bettering things for others until the warmth - if warmth there indeed be - raises all to the same boil.

Will garbage men still pick up garbage?  Maybe, maybe not, it depends. It all depends. Human imagination can pretty much do anything.

I have to say Thomas Edison was one of my heroes as a kid. I have to ask others, was he an enlightened man?

sums it up pretty well i think.
