Atheist/Religious
    #8930183 -

Long story short, my girlfriend is a pretty hardcore Christian. Been putting off telling her that personally I think Jesus can take his place next to Santa and the Easter Bunny because my life has genuinely changed for the better since we've been together. Basicly in the time we've been together I went from a pretty severe alcoholic and borderline college dropout to graduating with a double major and having a content life. I bring this up now because the next two major things in life, marriage and kids have entered the equation. While I don't really care one way or another if we have a religious service, I know eventually its gonna end up coming out because our kid is going to go "Mommy, why doesn't daddy come to church with us" or she'll ask me to go with her. Any ideas on how to tell her? She isn't pregnant yet if you're wondering that.

You could always just go to Church, sing along with the others, meet some friendly people and give up that hour or two a week for your loving wife. You don't have to be a devout Christian to sacrifice a few hours for your family, and you can explain your beliefs to your children when they're old enough to understand. No need to lie, and I'm sure your girlfriend -assuming she's a rational woman- would allow them to make up their own minds when they grow up a bit.

Go to church if it's that important to you.

I'm a hard-core agnostic, and I go to church on Christmas to make my Grandma happy.

It's all bullshit so I don't mind going at all.

Sing a bit, eat some communion wafers, have a bit of wine, and burn a candle.

:werd:

Nothing wrong with an agnostic going to church, it's good for social networking and all that (as long as it's not a nutty church that tries to scare kids into being good with the threat of hell, or that speaking-in-tongues pentacostal hoo-ha)

I'm agnostic, but if my partner wanted me to attend church with her and the kids, I don't think that'd be a problem (as long as it's a good church).

Also, you sound a little ignorant: "Personally I think Jesus can take his place next to Santa and the Easter Bunny."  You may not believe Jesus was a prophet, or that his teachings are particularly applicable to your life, but the evidence is pretty overwhelming that he did in fact exist. God can take his place next to Santa and the Easter Bunny, but Jesus most definitely existed (he just had a possibly-misguided messiah-complex)

To #2, both her and I love having kids too much for that not too happen.
To #4, the line you quote was inserted mainly for comedic purposes.
Anyways I ended up having "The Talk" tonight. It went well enough when she said she still loves me, but she was worried it would be something that could become an issue later on.

Are you fucking kidding me?  The evidence for the existence of Jesus outside of the bible is exteremtly slim.  A total of four historians (years after the supposed death of jesus I might add) mention jesus.  3 of those historians mention jesus only as christ, this is a title meaning "the anointed one" not a name.

The only historian that mentions Jesus by name is Josephus and the passages that mentions him are exteremely suspect and regarded as a fraud by many historians for reasons I won't get into here.

The life of Jesus as documented in the bible is obviously a plagiarism of countless pagan savior gods before him.  If Jesus did exist, then it is obvious that the details of his life in no way reflect the biblical account of his life.

So if I were to say that Jesus is up there with the easter bunny and santa, I would mean the BIBLICAL version of Jesus, not the historical one.

If a historical Jesus did exist, it doesn't take a genius to realize that the thought of a virgin birth, God being born into a man, a death and resurrection after 3 days, etc. is utterly riduculous.

if you don't want to go to church then don't go.  if she's ok with you being athiest then that's a big step in the right dirrection at least she isn't  saying she can't be in a relationship with someone who she knows will burn in hell.

500 and something years AFTER his supposed death. Jesus was nothing more than a person whom the original writers of the new testament attached ancient legends from up to thousands of years before him. Its the original Odyssey.

And how long was it before the first biography of Alexander the Great was written?

The epistles from the New Testament demonstrate that Christian churches were being built and worshiped in as little as 30 years after the death of Jesus.

you'd be buried under the historical accuracy of the New Testament if you posted anywhere more Christian than the shroomery.

And if you'd like, my brother-in-law is a Lutheran pastor who just spent the last four years in seminary if you're interested in actually thinking outside Zietgeist.

Uh, no.  During his lifetime and shortly thereafter.

Where are you getting your information from?

Do you want your children to be brought up Christian though?  Why does your wife get control of the belief system of your children?  Aren't your beliefs important?

It would be very important to me that my children weren't being spoon fed Jesus Juice from the day they were born.  I'd never get into a relationship with a Christian girl though so I may be hardkorz on this issue

I'm a long time atheist/agnostic married to a devout Lutheran. We get along fine, and we both agree the choices our children make regarding religion will be their choice to make, not ours.

My friends who were exposed to heavy christian indoctrination were always polarized away from it anyway, spoon-feeding is hardly a sure way to zealotry.

if you're an athiest, then you know that she is completely out her mind assuming she is an type of traditional christian.

second, alot of people are like blah blah blah swallow your pride if she makes you happy blah blah blah.
No way, if you think christianity is a crock of shit, then defintely don't let the issue go just because you'd be happier to ignore it.

i don't know, i'd rather definitely be alone and unhappy defending what i believe is right than comfortable tolerating some crazy nonsense.

i mean honestly, imagine the exact same scenario, except she worships aliens that are hiding behind a comet or was serious into devil worship.  would you put up with that shit?  if not, then why put up with inanity of christianity.

I lived with parents who believed Jesus was an alien and bigfoot was the slave race to the Atlantians. I have put up with that shit.

I'm also not shallow enough to leave the woman I love because I don't agree with her belief system. you try finding a girl with the same political and religious (or lack thereof) perspectiive and see how long that shit lasts.

We have great, intelligent, respectful dialog, and I wouldn't trade that for anything. it's not ignoring the issue. I have my problems with Christianity, I address them, we try to find  historical or archaeological evidence that corroborates her claim, and we discuss it. It makes both of us better.

so yeah, sucks to your asmar.
