You sound like a psychologically immature, wanna-be spiritual holier-than-thou.
Kids act maliciously because they're kids. They can show affection just as much as they can show hatred. To call them pure is to deny the whole other side of what makes kids humans.
Inherent traits of the parents? Come back to me when you raise your own kids.

Food is a metaphor here for spiritual nourishment.
Ask and ye shall receive. Let him who hath ears, hear.
I know that, I'm merely pointing out another non-literal bible verse for the guy here claiming the entire thing is literal.

I was watching a television show, maybe "No Reservations" and they were touring an old Twinkie factory in Cleveland that was now being used to house the World's Largest Bookstore, and they showed that the pipes were still filled with high fructose corn syrup, and that it wasn't rotting and even the rats wouldn't eat it.
Strangeness!

Let me ask you this first - Do you think this sentence...
"I would go to any extreme to win an argument."
...means that a person would kill their opponent in the debate?
While the sentence I typed above is not literal in the fact that most people would not truly do anything up to and including murdering a debater to win the argument, no one who hears the sentence will be confused about its meaning.
Aside from that though, perhaps you should read the testimonies of people who have received Christ in prison. You'll find many examples here: http://www.persecution.com/
I think you'll find that the Word of God fed their spirit when all hope was lost.
So I would argue that it is quite literal.

I forgot to check the verse... you didn't include the whole thing #6.
It also states that Jesus will give us this food. Jesus won't be back until the Rapture, at which point we become new beings. We will be sustained by the Word of God and not the food you're thinking of.
So yeah, 100% literal.

The difference is that kids don't know better. God doesn't kick three-legged dogs for running slow.
But, to get to the "non-literal" criticism of this verse - Matthew 18:3, you just have to read the sentence after the one that was quoted.
"2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
Jesus tells you exactly the trait of the child he is referring to. The child humbly obeyed when Jesus beckoned him. He didn't ask what was in it for him, he didn't try to bargain with Jesus "If I come there what will you do?"... he simply obeyed.

And we want to instill blind obedience to authority in our children because...?
Knowing better is a loaded term; by whose standards do they know better? They know how to conform, but that's certainly not a 'better' state.

I disagree. Without conformity society would not exist.
To exhibit faith one has to trust God. You may think 'blind obedience to authority' is bad, and in society it is. In following a perfect and loving God, it is not bad. You distrust the world's authority, and rightly so. It is imperfect because it is run by people, and all of us inherited the sin nature from Adam.
God expects blind obedience because it proves we know He is holy. He would never do anything to hurt us, and He expects to be trusted. It is an insult to God to say, "I need to understand how you are going to get me through this before I'll believe you will."

Until sin entered the world none of these things were issues. So blame Adam, not God.
It is no insult to God to say He needs us - that is why He created us. God desired to be loved.
