Judgement & Spirituality
    #8295335 -

Ok, i think we can all agree that the fundamental "goal" of spirituality is awakening, enlightenment, liberation from conflict/suffering. The main obstacle to waking up is the dualism of the mind judgements, when the mind sees unity/oneness there is no conflict, when there is no conflict life is bliss, simple joy of being.

All the sages dating back have hailed the wise who transcend the illusion of duality and live in oneness. Awakening is all about transcending duality.

This is from the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, a 5000 year old text that is concerned with technique not faith or principle, purely technique. It reads like a fusion between hinduism, buddhism, & taoism.

"The purity of other teachings is an impurity to us. In reality, know nothing as pure or impure"

This has the same message of Lao Tzu's teachings, beauty can only exist with uglyness, violence can only exist with non-violence, nothing can exist without its opposite.

The simplest way to ceasing innner conflict is to stop judging, its very easy, just stop judging right or wrong and your energy will sit still, and you will admire this perfect creation in all its beauty. Stop trying to solve and fix & mend & simply appreciate. Awareness does not judge it is simply aware.

The great teachers teach that awakening is not difficult, only the mind sees difficulty, all you need to do is drop everything & stop dividing existence, existence is one, be that one who doesnt judge and you become one with all as there is no longer any division!

duality is a problem because of separation and opposition (adversary-ness).
self against self
self against other
self against the world.
duality ceases to be a problem as self merges with self, merges with other and merges with world.
(and this is normal not weird or esoteric)
distinctions should still exist and so should a kind of judgement, but the the innate sense of opposition can dissolve into something more workable.

Thats what i mean dude, you realise any friction is just friction against yourself, or The Self.

Once judgement is stopped immoral & moral disappear, but that certainly doesn't mean that you act immoral its quite the opposite, some people think it means not giving a shit, but when you stop judging you start caring about everything as everything is you, vice versa.

well don't you judge when you select which chair you will sit in?
don't you judge when you chose the moment to go at a 4 way stop?
don't you judge when you chose to stay in bed becasue it is too early to get busy?
I think the word judgement is getting a bad rap here.

Im pretty sure you know what kind of judgement im talking about...

Giving up on judging in general creates less duality of good & bad, thus less tension, less sorrow, more acceptance, then more love & compassion. How can you be compassionate for something you judge as wrong? It is simply impossible, if you judge something as wrong already that is not compassion.

Judgement continues, but necessary judgement like choosing what chair to sit in, which route to take to work...much like when you work at getting rid of fear of death, you still wont jump off a ten story balcony but you have no unecessary fear & anxiety.

A big part of being aware is all about not jumping to judgements and being before the irrational mind, before the monkey mind, then the rational mind can be free of these animalstic tendencies of jealousy, anger, greed etc...im not saying destroy the mind im saying free your mind & to free your mind you must be free of the mind, you must be before it, observing it pass after you. This place before the mind does not judge, it lets all arise & pass, giving all space to breathe...

What your saying sounds like a noble thing. I'm not sure if I completely agree, however. I am trying to imagine your enlightened man: Free of all judgments, free of all "animalistic tendencies", his mind completely "rational". Nothing upsets or excites him; nothing worries him; he just kinda drifts. Your enlightened man is very peaceful but lifeless.

I'm not that familiar with the Asian philosophies, but if that is the general goal of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. I find it a noble goal, but also a confused one.

And that is where we depart. In short, I don't necessary agree that the spiritual man is free from conflict. He views it as part of life. I don't agree that he so "rational". The spiritual man is energetic, creative, full of life. He isn't always peaceful either. The spiritual man can get angry, when it is right and just. He doesn't just sit there judgeless, he is involved. He may be above jealously and greed, but he is not emotionless. My enlightened man is full of emotion, full of life, and full of energy.

Dogen the great zen master simply said "enlightenment is becoming one with all things" to become one with all things conflict must cease, as conflict is division, to become one with all things, the thing that sees separateness must cease to exist.

One misguided thought you are making imo is you have many ideas of what the enlightened man should be, these are attachments, you may continue to be this enlightened man and train yourself well, become all those thing you said, but the enlightened man is nothing, he is empty, there is no ego of desire & attachment.

This may seem scary, but who is scared? Ego is scared of dying, thats why emptiness is the ultimate teaching but many run from it as they think "I dont want to be empty, to be nothing" who is this "I" that is desiring, who is this "I" that is scared of dying?

Enlightenment can be nothing that you desire it to be or train it to be.
When there is no you wanting, only then you are enlightened, that is why many if not all sages have said enlightenment is utter & complete desirelessness, utter emptiness.

ps emptiness is the most fullfilling thing a human being can feel...just so i don't come off nihilstic

I could not disagree more when you say the enlightened man is empty, free from all attachments, desires -- with that so goes all his emotions, dreams, ambitions, in short his life. You're right that is a life of nothingness. A drifting zombie with nothing to live for. Try to imagine this passionless man; when you look into his eyes, he just gives an empty stare, judges nothing, is never angry or excited; his life has no meaning; he might as well be dead.

To me I see spirituality and enlightenment as all about life. It is all about having a purpose; it is living life to your fullest creative self. It is as simple as that. I view conflict as a part of life. I view having desires and attachments as giving our lives meaning. I say we should avoid becoming nothing and empty. Sure that's peaceful but it makes life meaningless.

'I say we should avoid becoming nothing and empty.'

QFT.

Fill yourself up. If you're Christ/Buddha then you should be properly full of yourself.

These are your egos perceptions of what emptiness is, you obviously have not experiened emptiness, emptiness is unending bliss, joy, love, its the deepest ecstacy, the ultimate human experience. There is no higher ecstacy in human form than reaching emptiness. Emptiness to you is just being empty, your ego doesn't like the sound of that, it is scared of being nothing. Not just you, all ego is terrified of emptiness/death, im not singling you out here, my ego too is terrified of dying.

You think part of enlightenment is attachment & desire?

klimt said:

I think that says it all.

Maybe you should read up on what enlightened/awakened masters have described enlightenment as, and how they say to get there, instead of relying on what your ego would like it to be...(im not having a go, just telling the truth, as you say you have no familiarity with asian philosophies yet you seem to think you know what enlightenment is!?)

Remember your not disagreeing with me your disagreeing with every single awakened sage that has ever lived, the way to enlightenment is becoming empty, this sounds nihlistic to your ego, what you don't realise is being empty is the most fullfilling experience a human being can have, only then can you be fullfilled. Your ego has to die. You have to die. Your ego is attachment & desire.

You seem to think becoming empty is like becoming nothing, you actually become everything. Ask yourself who is scared of becoming empty?

Maybe read a book about spiritual awakening from an author you like, as i dont think you'll listen to me...you just hear the word emptiness and your ego runs with its tail between its legs...

Chronic777:

You contradicted yourself multiple times. If you have no desire, if you have no attachment, you have no judgment -- there will be no bliss, joy, and especially no love. If someone lived out what you describe there would be an emotionless zombie. In addition, when you talk about reaching enlightenment and becoming "empty", you can't get around those being desires.

What I said is that desires and attachment give our lives meaning. And that spirituality is about having meaning in our lives. Enlightenment in my eyes is self-actualization. Now there are different types of spirituality, I'm not saying one is wrong and one is right and the others have to be discarded; I just find mine to be realistic and leads to a very fulfilling life.

I do need to read more about the Asian philosophies but I know enough about them to know that I won't find them very appealing. I find them to be repressive of our desires, emotions, attachments, etc. which remove the meaning to our lives. I also find that they are the ones who don't accept death. To accept death, IMO, is to realize there is nothing after this life. Saying we go to heaven, hell, or become reincarnated is denying death.

But if you find this philosophy so appealing, that's great for you. It's just not my cup of tea.

You have basically indirectly just said Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, & all the wise sages know nothing about love joy & bliss, they all taught non attachment, non judgement & non desiring.

Ill put this down to simply not having researched at all, how can you even be interested in the word "enlightenment" and not have researched what you are talking about?

If you have no desire or attachment all there is, is bliss, joy & love, that is unconditional. This is a simple fact of spirituality & awakening/enlightenment.

The love of attachment & desire is dependent on certain conditions, what if conditions change? Then love is gone, that is not true love.

Unconditional love
has no attachment or desire, only acceptance and true unconditional love.

You are so wrong man, buddhist, hindu & taoist philosophy ALL teach you to face your death. In facing death you realise truth of life. Conscious dying is the most powerful tool to the human mind. When you fully face death and you are gone, then that is when you reach emptiness, you can say "i have accepted there is nothing after death" but you have not fully accepted this as if you had become this nothing you would have realised emptiness and wouldve realised what non desire & non attachment are about.

the followers of jesus, buddha, etc. have packaged their product and marketted it.
when you add the bliss and joy aspect as a reward to meditation you misrepresent the practice, and fall into ranks with the marketers.

in jhana there are joy factors and bliss factors, however these are not goals or results as represented, they are phenomena encountered along the way.

I remember when I started meditation, I wanted to be a bill board for it. and when I started LSD I wished I had a colored arm band to preach the gospel of rainbow child.

this enthusiasm is good, but it distorts the information you are trying to deliver.

the enthusiasm is best applied on your own path, not to convincing others of it's validiy.
some fall off their path because they take the arguments with others too seriously, after pouring too much energy into validating their own ideas through how many others they can convince.

I guarantee you, it is not about how many others can be convinced.

I have researched the subject, Chronic777. You take what I have said to mean I have done no homework at all.

You say that enlightenment is about having no desires, no attachments, no judgments, no passion, no pleasure, denying the carnal, and no emotions except for unconditional love, joy, and bliss that comes as a result of living this way.

All that sounds good as a theory but imagine living that way; it is a life of a zombie. It strips the meaning out of our lives and out of life. If you want to live that way, kiss your family good by, pack your bags and head up into the mountains (unless you prefer the streets). Your life will be peaceful, but nothing more than a void. I see no bliss or joy as a result of this. It is a meaningless existence.

If your goal is bliss -- fill your life up with meaning and energy and passion! Strive for self-actualization! That is where bliss is! That is where the happy life is! The happy life is a meaningful life!

Re: Judgement & Spirituality [Re: klimt]

klimt, define passion please.

The webster dictionary defines it as:

1 often capitalized a: the sufferings of Christ between the night of the Last Supper and his death b: an oratorio based on a gospel narrative of the Passion

2 obsolete : suffering

3: the state or capacity of being acted on by external agents or forces

4 a (1): emotion <his ruling passion is greed>
(2)plural : the emotions as distinguished from reason
b: intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction
c: an outbreak of anger
5 a: ardent affection : love
b: a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept
c: sexual desire
d: an object of desire or deep interest

I'll assume you mean #4. Are you saying being pushed and pulled by your emotions is a good way to live?

I think you are making a few mistakes of identification. By identifying with your thoughts, emotions as yours, you begin taking the thoughts and emotions that differ from "you" personally, thus giving the potential for unwholesome states to arise.

If there is no "self" present it doesn't mean there is a body without its constituent ingredients present, it just means the perception of that being has changed drastically. The Buddha Way is unattainable. I vow to attain it.

Yes, that would be correct.

Do I agree that being pushed and pulled by emotions is a good way to live?
-- I can't say that we are pushed and pulled by our emotions. People are largely responsible for them. I am saying that in our passions and in our emotions our lives are given meaning.

I think Buddhism and other similar philosophies are making mistakes as stated in my above post... feel free to enlighten me.

klimt, emotions and emotionalism are two very different beasts.

Emotions, wholesome desires, and pleasure is ok.

Just don't get too attached to your hair, to your soft skin, to the young girls, to your views, to others views, to anger, to greed, to jealousy, to... uhh I think I could go on forever.

Point being: No everlasting satisfaction can be found in the world, anywhere. It is fruitless to wander the world in search of it. Right here, and right now, contains all you ever need to feel wonderful and loving to all things. It is out of attachment to our views (passions and emotionalisms) that unnecessary destruction occurs.

You did not study Buddhism. You studied your views on Buddhism.

There are two paths in practicing Buddhism: the lay life (not monks) and monk life.

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.31.0.nara.html

This sutta here are the instructions of living the lay life. The Buddha was giving advice to a young Hindu practitioner named Sigalovada, who was worshiping the 6 directions according to his religion. The Buddha changed his perception of what he was actually doing and gave him a few pointers on how to live a wonderful, successful life.

Its very enlightening, and I hope you enjoy it.

This "emptiness" is very different from a zombified state. In fact, the person who resides in this "nothingness" is very alert and present in this moment. Remember that this is an attempt to convey something which can not be fully understood until experience. Once you are "there" you become detached, but not absent from the world. This does not mean you will become a sedintary, useless being. You actions will spring spontaneously from a place within you beyond your mind and body.

This is my understanding at least. :shineon:
