I am going on a 5 day fast starting tonight at 8PM after my sushi. Water & tea only. Cleanse my body, my brain.

That sounds good. I take it you've fasted before. Yeah?

My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

5 days eh? Wow. Good luck with that. I'd fast, but I'm mildly hypoglycemic so it'd fuck me right up. I do, however, like to cut it down to tea, juice and plain rice once in awhile.

After a 5 day fast the most incredible thing is that food tastes "real" again. Try it sometime, the taste of a berry is the best thing in the world.

Could you recommend some reading on fasting or what I would do to prepare for one? I've been very interested in trying it for awhile, but do not know where to start.

geedorah,
Always start small --- before fasting it is a good idea to eat a light healthy, balanced, nutritious meal. For you first time I recommend trying a 24 hour fast. It is usually easier to start this fast in the early evening, around 7 or 8PM -- because you will be going to bed soon and getting a nice chunk of time out of the way by sleeping. Go all day with nothing but water or tea --- I suggest a good healthy tea that you like. When hungry, concentrate on why you are fasting...for meditative...spiritual...cleansing reasons.
5 days may seem like a long time without any food, and it is --- but it isn't as difficult as it seems with a few practice runs. Usually around day 3 or 4 without any food, your metabolism slows down which makes things easier.
After an extended fast, 2 or more days, always eat a very light & simple meal. You'll notice how amazing & different good food tastes!!
Mentally & physically fasting can be very rewarding, but it can also be hard of course...try not to fast when you know you're going to be very active. Fast when you know you'll be generally alone, etc. good luck!
A pretty decent overview. This will give you more information about what else to research.

Cool. So, you will not have to shoplift for a few days.

Couldnt 5 days of no food be somewhat harmful to the body?

Not likely. I've done several 5 day fasts and I always feel awesome afterwards. Fasting is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself IMO. It's really cleansing and renewing, and it really strengthens willpower. Also gives me a mindstate not unlike tripping...and tripping right at the end of a fast is very rewarding as well.
Props to the OP; enjoy it!
