Re: Solitary enlightenment [Re: Epigallo]

You are always the watcher and the one being watched. If you choose to disidentify with the one being watched, this only brings confusion. The one being watched is not at all seperate from the one watching.

To put it visually, I think you can get about this far:

Observer -> Observed -> Observed

Before you realize that you're just you, sitting quietly, and youve always been there.

While I agree that there can be a calm center and a feeling of someone watching the scene as I also have experienced. I can not tell what that is. This may not be enlightenment but some aspect of mind. I just don't know and just because people have been saying it is enlightenment, soul, or Atman, certainly don't make it so.

I am really not a nay sayer, I'm a somewhat rational and honest person about things that I cannot be sure of and I say so.

This isn't enlightenment. This is called "The Witness". It's a practice people develop to help them stop identifying themselves as the mind and body.

It is enlightenment when you are the Witness and Know that you are the Witness. It is a technique, as Huston Smith described it in The Religions of Man under the chapter on Hinduism, and the subtopic of Jnana Yoga, wherein the yogi creates a wedge between his pure awareness (Witness) and his identification with mind and body by thinking of himself in the third person. It is what Ram Dass called "playing the eye of God," and it is an intellectual technique.

When, however, the transpersonal center suddenly takes on the 'sense' of Identity - when one is no longer standing on the Earth (so-to-speak) and looking at the Sun but rather experiences oneself as the Sun with ones psychophysical self peripheral to one's Real Self, then one has Realized one's identity as the Witness. I borrowed Will Parfitt's planetary-solar metaphor for this radical shift in consciousness from his book The Elements of the Qabalah. Thus, when Eckhart Tolle speaks of Being as the "Witness" or "Watcher," he is indeed speaking of enlightenment.

It is difficult for me after some 34 years of 'seeking' to give up the seeking mind for the Realization of Being. Buddha did that after just half a dozen years or so. Enlightenment is actually far more available than all those metaphors of birds wearing down mountains with a ribbon after countless millennia, or the thousand of rounds of rebirth. I think...these are meant to weed out the wheat from the chaff, but one does not need to become discouraged. That, after all is just a thought born emotion. 'Wheat and chaff' itself is a Biblical metaphor for the same division of those who are saved and those who are not.

The only thing that keeps us from enlightnment is our mind, our continual disbelief in the availability of our own true nature. It is like Yoda levitating a spacecraft from a swamp and Luke Skywalker proclaiming "I don't believe it!," to which Yoda responds "That is why you fail."

is there a limit to how far this can go?

You can't go very far because you are always here.

you can go very far from the confines of the mind and body. "you" are not always here, i guarantee that.  there is always more awareness to become, once you have experienced expanded consciousness limitations cease and the realization that there is much more to experience comes into being.

but no, "I" can't go very far :uptosomething:
