did anyone go to the "National Mandate for Peace" March?

Whenever I go to demonstrations, me and my friends are like the only young people there. The modern youth seem so apathetic, and mostly the middle aged and elderly are the ones being vocal and active these days...

Here's a quote from Sean Penn from the link- I had to laugh as I was picturing Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High being there saying this-

"lawmakers will pay a price in the 2008 elections if they do not take firmer action than to pass a nonbinding resolution against the war, the course Congress is now taking."

And then of course, he was delivered a pizza at the Podium and said,




Hanoi Jane came out of activism retirement to speak there as well, this time, being supportive of the troops and their families.

Not sure what good it will all do.

On the same day, it was said in the release that Bush called the Prime Minsister of Iraq reaffirming his commitment to send in more troops. :tongue:

Peace protests do absolutely nothing. They were very effective in creating a controversial prelude to the war, but now that everything is shocked and awed the government is going to finish their task in Iraq regardless of the unpopularity of the war, because logically, the country would fall apart if the United States pulled out prematurely.

I went to the march. It was ok, but there is definetely low morale on the anti-war front these days. There was a very palpable anger against the war, but very little hope or optimism in the air as to whether or not congress is going to succeed in turning things around and getting a serious exit plan on the table.

I disagree that protests acheive absolutely nothing. True, the hey day of the protest movement has long since passed, and you could probably still get like a million people marching and it still wouldn't be an effective political tool. But just because a march can't convince Bush or any other politician that they need to drastically alter the course of the war doesn't mean that they are pointless. This administration won't admit defeat, they are reminiscent of Emperor Hirohito towards the end of WWII, so no amount of marching will turn the executive branch around.

But I've come to think of a march as a very productive weapon against apathy. Having marched yesterday with tens of thousands of other citizens I feel tcompletely rejuvinated and energized and inspired to actually keep opposing the war in any way I can, if for no other reason than so I can know that I'm doing the right thing.

It is better to light a match that starts a small flame than sit alone and curse the darkness.

It is important for us to stand up and oppose the war because it is immoral to be silent. It is immoral to ignore war based solely on the fact that you have grown jaded and apathetic. It is immoral and it is self-destructive. Action is the best weapon against despair.

You're right though. There wasn't enough youth. Were you there for the speeches? I kind of thought that the 12 year old girl from Boston was the best speaker. She just tore it up...kept her speech really simple and got the crowd going based on a very simple message...support for this war was and always has been based on bald-faced lying, and everything the opposition was saying about the war from the start has proven to be true.

Speakers like Jesse Jackson and Jane Fonda just sound so old hat. I'm glad they were there but they are too jaded and rehearsed to be adeqautely pissed off. SO much apathy these days...if there were a draft I think things would be different.

Oh yeah and did you see the counter protest alongside the march? All twelve of them? If you blinked you probably missed it.

D.C. Rally Demands Iraq War End, Better Celebrities

(2007-01-27) — Tens of thousands of protesters will rally today on the mall in Washington D.C. to call on President George Bush to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq, and to demand better celebrity spokesmen for their cause.

Celebrities slated to speak at the rally include Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Three of them have made careers out of pretending to be someone they’re not, while Ms. Fonda is best known as the daughter of actor Henry Fonda.

Organizers said the biggest challenge facing the anti-war movement today is how to hold together a loose coalition of groups with divergent agendas using celebrities who peaked in popularity 10 to 30 years ago.

“The speaker roster reminds me of the old Hollywood Squares game show,” said one unnamed staffer of Vegan Lesbians for Racial and Nuclear Justice, whose dozens of members will cross the continent to join the rally today. “I mean Fonda, Sarandon, Glover and Jackson might as well be Charo, Joan Rivers, George Gobel and Paul Lynde. How am I going to get my group excited about geopolitical and military strategy with these has beens leading the way?”

Sad but true. Unfortunately, even though there were dozens of great speakers, the only ones that people really took note of were Sean Penn, Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, all of whom delivered somewhat mediocre speeches.

The founder of Iraq veterans for peace was awesome. Maxine Waters was awesome. Dennis Kuccinich was awesome. There were some clergy that were awesome. They all gave great speeches. So it wasn't a total loss.

But for the media to take any event seriously you have to trot out Hollywood celebs, even if they don't have much to say.

And yes its also true that coalition politics cause problems. Lots of disorganization. Lots of protesters taking advantage of the situation to try and spread other messages. There was a lot of very loud and aggressive pro-Palestine activism yesterday. Which pissed me off to no end...but I guess they have a right to be there so there's not really anything I can do about it except argue with them.

I saw it on TV and didn't see any towel heads there. I usually hate rap music, but thought the rap-like music they played there sounded more musical and was more tolerable than usual. I had fantasies of going there to murder anti-war protesters, but decided not to do it.

Yeah I was there, and I was hanging out with the younger crowd. But it blew me away how old the crowd was too. I met lots of Vietnam vets, and everyone had a hilarious sign. But yeah young people like myself were there, I brought a bongo drum so I was marching around with people playing instruments, which was mostly younger people. The celebrities were ridiculous, even though I like Tim Robins and Sean Penn, but I ignored the speeches. I wouldn't have listened except the people I was with were set on hearing them for some reason. I enjoyed wandering around the crowd and seeing all the weird shit going on. I can't imagine that changing any Iraq policy, I went just for the experience.
