I am pissed off (protest in Athens)
    #1312845 - 02/16/03 08:44 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Well, i am pissed off by the cops and the journalists.

On saturday, the most important news subject was obviously
the mass gathering of people out on the streets to protest against
the upcoming war on Iraq. In Athens Greece, about 200,000 people
went to protest, marching from Syntagma square (Parliament) up to
the American Embassy, where a signed document would be given
there, explaining why we protested.

I was in the middle of the protest. When we were close to the American
Embassy, the cops approached us from the left and with a sudden move,
they cut the river of people, just in front of me and my friends. So we pushed them
and cut their line, because we wanted to move forward. They had something
else in mind; they reached the far right of the mass and they stood still
in front of the 'blacks' (anarchists if u like). It was a matter of time, until
a stone was thrown to the cops and then the decision was made; they
threw more than 10 gas holders into us [the main mass] who had
nothing to do with the Blacks. The following scenes were full of panic,
as you could see 2000 or more people running into the other streets,
crying, holding their heads, trying to avoid the gases. I saw mothers
trying desperately to protect their infants and elderly people who couldnt
breathe. The large majority of people were peaceful, so lots of kids and
elderly were to be seen.
From that point the Blacks started the fight and soon everything was in
a mess. I think it was all made by the cops, anyway. So the police cut the protest in half, so only 100,000 managed
to arrive at the American Embassy, which looked like someone needed
a tank to approach it, as the cops were standing in two infinite lines and
one line of vehicles cutting the approach to the embassy.
I needed more than 5 hours to be ok again. The chemicals the cops use
are so nasty; you cry, you cant breathe, you feel terrible headache... and
i really dont know how nasty can this be for our health in longer periods.

But then again, the american ambassador said: "Yes, you should protest, but you should head to the Iraq embassy instead". lol. Whatever.

When i returned home, i waited to watch the news on tv, to see how large
was the gathering and what happened in other cities of this poor world.

Another dissapointment. For bad luck, our ex-king Constantinos who now
lives in London arrived in Athens incognito  and the first report on the
news was what did he eat [interview with the chef] and shit like that. Then they said that the protest
was violent [because there were some incidents] but they didnt say anything
about how large it was or which was the meaning and so on. Then, again,
the discussion came to the appearance of the ex-king and there were
five people at least discussing theories about what passport did he used.
Was it a danish one? FUCK US NOONE CARES.

We had to wait for the news in NET TV, which is public (citizens pay for it inside the electricity bill...) which were better.

Thats why i am pissed.

Thats some fucked up shit right there. You've got every right to be pissed off. I certainly would be. You should be proud that you went though, at least you are standing up for what you believe in. You were one of about 30 million people on this planet who want this madness to stop. Unfortunately, although the governments like to tell us that we have a voice, most are ignoring the desire for peace.
