Thanks Jiggy, here's another analogy:
If one falls down a tree by breaking a branch, there is no need to chop the whole tree or the whole forest afterwards, you see ?
Maybe ones climbing skills were not good enough, to recognize that perhaps the branch simply was too thin to carry you. Perhaps there was a little wind breeze, which let the branch break under your weight. Or perhaps the branch was sawed from someone with mal intend, hoping that you will chop down the forest after your fall.

Perhaps one has seen a better and more stable tree before one's fall ?

There are too many people who tend to chop the whole forest after such an event.
That is counterproductive, as this event imho it is more about re-evaluation for better integration.

The Devil? Don't believe in the Devil. I do believe that it's easy to become unhappy. As Don Juan said to Carlos when he complained of depression and loss of meaning; "you are beginning to learn". Learning is a continuous battle and warriors work. I think Ped may be doing that.

The devil is the ego. It's a part of us.

The ego is not evil. It exists to serve us, but it does not discern between what WAS helpful and what IS helpful. If a behavior works once, we will enact it again (and again).

The devil was made up by parents (and elders) who wanted to control their children (flock.)

Orthodox Christians believe that even the devil can be saved. I like to apply this idea to the ego.

The ego does not need to be saved, as it exists only to serve us.  What is required is to develop a cooperative relationship with the ego.  This allows for more flexibility in our living.  There is nothing wrong with the ego, just a case of GIGO.

The problem here is that when I said "devil," you automatically read it as "evil." But think about who Satan is in the Christian tradition: A fallen angel who was banished from heaven for his pride and stubbornness. He is the archetype of the unrestrained ego. The ego also distances us from the divine when left unrestrained. So yes, it does need to be "saved" from itself, and brought back up to heaven, from whence it came.

I completely disagree.  Our ego is not the problem.  This is like saying that cars cause drunk driving accidents.  While it is true that we couldn't drive without a car, the condition of the driver is the issue.

As to whether or not the devil is evil, that is a question for those interested in religious iconography.  The "fallen angel" idea has been thoroughly mixed with images from Greek mythology (God of the Underworld), as well as stories of the Bogey Man told to children.

In terms of the actual definition of devil:

1. In many religions, the major personified spirit of evil, ruler of Hell, and foe of God.
2. A subordinate evil spirit; a demon

Sounds pretty clear-cut to me.

You seem to somehow be under the impression that I'm calling the ego a "problem." On the contrary, the ego is part of the greater divine plan. It just needs to be reigned in and put in its proper place.

If its not a problem, why worry about it?

If it needs to be "saved" then it is problematic.  I think that it is already in its proper place, and that there is no need to alter the way that it functions.  The problem is what we ask it to do for us, not that it does what we ask.

Divine plan?  What school of psychology is that from?

Re: You Are Very Unhappy [Re: Veritas]

Ok, I guess when you put it that way, I would say it is a problem. But it is also an opportunity. I must disagree that the ego is already in its right place. The ego, left to its own devices, leads to unbridled desire, which, as the Buddha said, leads to suffering. And what's this about what we ask our ego to do for us? I don't think most people ask anything of their. They simply obey it unquestioningly. It is like the serpent in religious symbolism. In almost every religion, the serpent is a negative symbol when it is dominant, but a positive symbol when it is submissive(compare the snake in the Garden of Eden to Moses' staff turning into a serpent). So too is the ego positive when it is under our control, but negative when we are under its control.

Anyway, as I was saying before getting sidetracked, the trappings of the ego tempt us all(as symbolized by Jesus' temptation in the desert), but though it may seem too strong to resist sometimes, there is hope for us all.
