Re: Enlightenment through the aquisition of material goods. [Re: BlueCoyote]

Not a great example. If nations pooled money and time together, we would have reached the moon much easier and faster.

But I would agree that everything has spiritual value. Suffering ends when one has had enough. At least the self created type and maybe all.  Without that suffering one would never want to move to something else. :mushroom2:

But isn't exactly that 'pooling' that, what is claimed as 'unfair' ? That was my point.
The cold war, accelerated the landing on the moon. (Otherwise, I would like it more, too)

You are talking about a world in conflict. We cannot know how fast things happen when everyone gets along, because it has never happend on a grand scale.

It seems rather like wishful thinking to believe that all bad things you do will come bad to you badly. All things you do will have an effect on your life... but just because you do something nasty doesn't mean that there isn't a possibility that it will come back to you in a positive way.

Perhaps you are reading something that is not in my words, because I never once implied the meaning you seem to have derived from them. I never referred to the actual nature of the effects that will be produced as a result of one's actions. I simply stated that one's actions will produce subsequent actions undergone in one's environment, that consequently effect oneself, changing the face of existance. I am not judging one's actions here or stating that these effects will "pay one back", or whatever.

I am emphasing this because I do not believe that the vast majority of people on this planet are acutely aware of this, the implications of our actions and how they, dramatically put (rightfully so, that's the whole point, once again ), change the face of existance.

Why am I mentioning this here? :nut:

(Apparently I just won't give it away, eh?)

Just what exactly is a "spiritual thrill?" I mean, I know this is a Spirituality & Philosophy forum, but do we have to attempt to apply the word "spiritual" as an adjective to the word "thrill"? I have never seen thrill or kick or rush used in this way. A Sunday school teacher might tell her 8 year olds that playing Bible games is 'spiritual fun,' when the fun applies only to childish competition.

BTW, I just ordered a very nice tapestry to hang on a wall in our living room. It is not a bedspread or inexpensive Indian print, it is a woven tapetry in the browns, tans and muted gold to fit with the wood and Mex tile. I was 'thrilled' to have found this because I have scoured the net for two years for such an item. It even has a mandala patern on it to replace the 4' round, woven tan & brown mandalic mat that's been hanging there for 9 years (from grad school days - Pier One Import thing). I then took the time to dig out 2 year old purchase receipts in order to find out where I bought the rod for the first tapestry I bought, in order to match the filials. I found the place and ordered a matching rod.

Great! A thrill - really. But, aside from turning momentarily to the remembrance of GOD to express Thanksgiving for a beautiful material item that will enhance our home, I could not say that there was anything intrinsically spiritual about anything but the motive to express Thanksgiving to GOD (I often give thanks, but then again, I squat down to talk with the same couple of lizards that run across my walkway when I leave the house [one is getting quite used to me but does not jump into my hand - yet ] I've been called "loco" before for talking to cats or talking squirrels out of trees with 'squirrel-talk.')

At any rate, when I was young and exploring the powerful spiritual philosophies of the world, and I didn't own anything beyond some books, some music, my few jeans, boots, shirts and leather jacket; maybe some poster art and a ceramic Buddha - it was easy to espouse a non-materialistic perspective. I owned no possessions! It is quite different to acquire quite a bit of things (the average person, not Donald Trump) and then divest yourself of them to live in a van, tent or as homeless. In this culture, such an action would probably evidence mental illness, not spiritual renunciation. If one is a male who is looking for a partner, spouse, etc., that life-style does not work with renunciant mentality. I remind readers of this post that The Middle Way allows for the merger of material and spiritual values. The aesthetic may be different: Yogis may decorate with flowers while Zennists might drop a handful of pine needles on a white tablecloth - petalled chakra imagery vs. form and emptiness.

Bottom line: this anti-materialist bias is a product of being twenty something, minimalism and  non-attachment due to unreadiness (emotional and financial), a potent idealism attributable to youth and the inexperience of attempting to live in such a way for decades. [Ah, it stopped raining and the sun came out. Going for a swim and a beer. Thanks for reading].

Peace.

For sure Phluck. I was brought up Catholic so I had no interest in gaining wealth. As a result, I had no interest in planning my future, because I was taught to rely on God. I was duped. I'm in college now though- hanging in there.
