So, what exactly are you wishing to discuss here? Is it specifically something that pertains to this forum that is more appropriate here than The Pub? Or this simply solicitation to your thread in The Pub with the word "God" to make it seem justified?

If you wish to discuss some aspect of this here, then what is it?

the title of the post can have several meanings so i don't want to narrow it down. i can describe some possible topics that head in slightly different directions, but i will wait to see if someone replies

what is the best environment to help kids "wake up."

what does education have to do with God?

Ram Dass talks about this in TODTI. from memory he says

first off i would initiate a program for teachers to work on themselves"

then he says that when he sits with a child (or anyone for that matter) he gets rid of the idea in his mind that he is a teacher or that there is teaching going on. he just "centers" and is not thinking "now i am teaching" he then mentions that you can never really teach another human, that "we do it to ourselves"

other ideas?

the other way i was thinking when i made this post is that,

how it is possible to teach God. if you made God a subject, how would you teach it? i think it is impossible, because God is no-thing

and so if you can't teach God (say so if you think you can and i'll consider it maybe), then what is the purpose of school? God is worth learning. school is a bunch of information, rules, and fights break out and the kids are never reminded about God

and i know what you are thinking "then just send your kid to religious school because not everyone wants religion taught in schools" right? i'm not talking about religion. you can be reminded of God in many different ways. kids never see trees. they can't hear the birds singing. even if it is springtime and the windows are open, you can't hear birds when you are thinking! and likewise thoughts are the poison that kills God. so in order to get good grades, you have to think certain thoughts... i did that for 12 years and got great grades, want to see my transcript?

God can be more easily seen in nature than in cinderblock walls and bar graphs

Hey, now we have some thoughts to start running with.

Give me a few to get nice and :stoned: and then contemplate some of your questions.

I am a middle school crisis/group/family counselor. I do my best to convey my 'being' to kids. They, for example, know that I could drive a Mercedes-Benz, but choose to drive a Mazda Miata instead. Their question is 'why?' I rarely speak of God, even though I now have a 7th grade girl who is Gnostic without ever having heard the word. She knew the meaning of the word 'alchemy' in the 6th grade and even the differences between Chinese and Western alchemy. She comes to my experience, ready-made, so-to-speak. She may require encouragement, but she's already on a path of awakening. She may become a personal friend if and when she is old enough.

The kids who want to drop out of school and play thug are the one's with whom I'll discuss just why I won't drive a car that has the status of a Benz. They may never awaken, and may well get arrested and incarcerated. My last middle school had maybe 7 kids who committed murder - even matricide.

As Ram Dass always said, all one ever does or can do is 'sadhana' - work on oneself. I do give tips on how kids can make adolescent life better for themselves - ensure more freedoms - just because I 'Know' how adolescents function and how parents treat to them. I teach them how to reverse restrictive actions by their parents. I teach FREEDOM - personal, psychological, financial, etc. as the highest value in human existence. I am practicing the Buddhist 'Right Livelihood' as one of the Eightfold Path in doing my job. I teach them not to become smokers by graphic example, and not to become drug-addicted, sex-addicted, money-addicted, food-addicted, since all addiction is slavery. I've had some feedback over 20 years and sometimes I am rewarded with the knowledge that I have helped, but it doesn't matter. I do what I do - and it keeps me alive in the process.

See, the GOD delusion, the Virus of Faith, and then maybe , education has a chance.

Faith is the shutting down of thinking, the suspension of rational thought, for beleif.

Look at the tree of knowledge MYTH, what a shity myth, dont eat from the tree of knowledge??

As for god??
Does it exist?
I would say no, but its an interesting disscusion to have, and kids should be in on it.

What I dont like, is the idea of people pushing their religon on children, or anyone else for that matter.

How should kids learn about god??
Well if at all, they should learn it with shows like, the question of god, its a PBS 4 part series where Freud and C.S. Lewis argue about the existence of god.

In general, they shouldnt, kids are in school to learn, not to have someone tell them they have to , "belive", rather then study the evidence, or that their bodies are sinful, afterall, your born dirty, you need god to clean you up

some suggestions... it's good not to take it on blind faith. also, some "things" that i was taught, like, "this is the story and this is what it means", i didn't believe because i just didn't, but later i had changed and was looking from a differnt place and found out what they meant myself. i went to church like you probably did and the pastor said his ideas (well i think this passage means _____ and we should all do _____)and none of it resonated, you know? it had no relavence because i didn't feel it inside. now i think i know what the adam and eve story is about, and it's not what most preachers think. find what works for you... and the fact is if you don't feel it inside and trust it then it doesnt matter what you say you believe. you believe it or not and what is the point of getting someone to say "i believe in jesus" because all you've gotten is this empty verbal vow which doesn't help anyone see God, does it. and all the people join the "i believe in jesus" club because they have all said it, and nobody is actually experiencing these states which was the whole point of jesus coming to earth, to help us see God.

i've been wondering just what is the point of education when you can't make another being believe an idea anyway, and more importantly you can't make another person see God. we have to learn (whatever that means) how to "see God" or "be happy" etc. ourselves, and so i think education is more along the lines of providing that supportive environment where the child can do whatever he has to do, and making it as easy as possible perhaps, rather than "inserting" the information ("knowledge"lol) into the child, like it is done now. i know what Gomp said is the truth... want to know how i know? because we can only be. what else is there but being? there is only being, so being is how we teach (if we teach). its also how we do everything else though teaching seems to be where we are doing the most damage.

and so i want to know how to make it easy for kids (and everyone)

That sounds interesting. In my school system the parents would complain, and they would ride you out of town on a rail, but I think your on the right track there. (no pun intended)

This is the way I was educated.  I was homeschooled according to the educational principles practiced by Maria Montessori.  You would probably find  her books  very interesting.

:sun:

I think the best way to "teach" children to see God (or recognize the divinity within themselves, as I prefer to phrase it), is to avoid getting in their way.
