do you even care if there is a god?
    #316449 - 05/13/01 06:50 PM (23 years, 4 months ago)

why do many people feel the need to search for god? I just say waite till you die and see what happens. Its more exciting that way. i don't know much about religion but one thing I do know is that I don't know the anwsers or if there are any anwsers so I am not going to use religion to only see blindly.

if people would just put down the bible or whatever religious text they read, and pick up some good books on meditation, the chakras, astral travel, ie, I think thier lives would have alot more meaning. And they'd probably be alot happier too.

The "who cares" belief is called agnosticism. (Agnostic) I totally agree... who really cares if theirs a god?

do a search on agnosticism... may find interesting results

Sometimes, I believe that I am a God. Perhaps we are all gods. Imagine that, us, the Gods of the Universe.

as far as i know, agnostics don't exactly 'not care' as much as they admit they 'don't know'. i could be wrong but i always understood agnostics to be of no belief because none could be proven. a lot of people think that it is the same as atheism (who believe in nothing - if that's possible).

as for caring if there is a god - i care. i do not want to wait until i die, because there is a natural undying urge in my mind that says there is more to all this.

maybe being afraid of death is just our species way to make sure we live long enough to breed...

you are correct. agnosticism (according to senior religion) is when a person cant decide if there is a God because it is beyond our human comprehension. There are to many facts on both sides to decide on a definate. Charles Darwin was an agnostic. anyway, i think that there is something more to life.

c'mon kids mainstream america is picking up on the relation of altered states of consciousness and god. you mean to say i can find basically mre information on this topic in newsweek Religion And The Brain than a board on spiritualiy and altered conciousness....last week I saw on the fox family channel all about alien experiences and altered states. ya'all are going to have to take a step back when mainstream has more eye opening radical views than yourselves....

Personally, I think that if our existanace is based -soley- around finding the meaning for existing.. it makes the whole point of existing, meaningless.. saying that, I'm glad we do ask questions like 'why?' because it just helps the species progress. other than that, I dont really care if there is a god.. The universe is cool though.

is it questions that progress a species or is it answers? either way you cant have one with out the other. wow what a useful observation! i think not, contradiction is the basis of the simpleton and yes we are all simpletons. anyone can make a contradition, to me a contradiction is what blocks our quest for enlightenment. it is just beyond our realm of thinking to see past a counter that is in fallible to our minds. take infinite, can you disprove that it goes on forever or that it does not. i cannot.

Sampson, yes, questions and answers go hand in hand and are the fuel for our progress. About proving infinite going on for ever, theres no need to because the word 'infinite' was created to express the idea that something has no boundaries or limits, so theres no reason to justify it. But to fully prove that infinite goes on forever, you'd have to prove that the universe is infinite and that'd be a hard task to accomplish. =)

I once heard the term "apatheist" for a person who doesn't care if there is a God or not.

Personally, I think that if you don't really care, then you haven't thought enough about it. It's too crucial a question to be ignored. Not *knowing*, on the other hand, is a different matter.

I care enough about the question, and about what the existence of a God would mean for humanity. That's in part why I've decided there is none. Once I got past the longing for Transcendence, I found that I still care about it, but that it just isn't an issue anymore.

As for why people search for God, I like to quote Pascal (roughly):

"In the heart of every man is a hole in the shape of God."

You either fill the hole with whatever you can find, or you accept it as it is.

morgue juice, science has proven that the universe is infinite, they have dicovered that it is constanting continuing spreading out in all directions and getting larger everyday, when God spoke the universe into existance, His word went forth, it is still going today.

everyone should be a practitionor of black magick. that isn't a religion and you can be in a religion and still practice it. remember, you are the creators of the universe. it is yours to command and control, to bend at your slightest whim.

apathist -  HA HA HA -
I like that.
I care if there is a God.  Actually it's just that there is one and only one.  This is the scariest and most joyful realization anyone will ever have.  BUT.
For some people, it isn't one they have had and they can't imagine ever having it, so fuck it - "why worry about it?" - they say.  I do not know how or why to convince these people to even consider it relevant to them.  I believe it is, but usually, noone cares what I believe.  Jesus is the Truth, but unless you need Him really bad, you probably just think of God in terms of churches or pamphlets. blah:mad:
Some people love their churches too, so -heh- go figure.
If you don't care, then I don't know how I can even sound like I'm making sence...but to answer your post, yes I care.

Coma- an atheist isn't a person who believes in nothing. That's a nihilist. An atheist just doesn't believe in any sort of deity.
I could technically call myself an agnostic (there is no way to be sure if there's a god or not) but I think any rational agnostic should also be an atheist.
I "don't believe in" a great number of things- things for which no convincing evidence exists. Faires, life on the moon, etc etc. None of these can really be disproved, but there isn't any reason to. Doubt should be the default position- and 99% of the time in day-to-day life it is- but it seems a lot of people make a special case for faith in God.

To answer the question, no, I don't care if there is a God. From all I've seen God is irrelevant.
Maybe He does hear our prayers, and has about a 50/50 chance of answering or ignoring them. Following an infinitely wise and intelligent decision process, (which appears identical to dumb luck) he intervenes and changes the world (in a way which appears identical to natural processes.) Maybe God intentionally designed and created every living thing on the planet in exactly the same way they would have been expected to evolve naturally, with no intervention, over billions of years.
And maybe our soul- (an entity that performs exactly the same function of a living primate brain, except it is invisible and supernatural) leaves our body and ascends to a higher plane in a way indistinguishable from oxygen deprivation-induced visions followed by brain cell death.

So what if I'm going to be reincarnated? My next incarnation won't remember anything of this life, just as I remember none of my previous one. I won't be "me" anymore in any meaning ful sense, so as far as I'm concerned, the scenario of reincarnation is no differnet from the default assumption of death followed by the end of the self and eternal non-being.

IF God exists, it doesn't make any real difference, because science has systematically ruled out all Gods that intervene in any measurable and detectable way. Even if you're a believer, you have to admit that if God didn't exist, people would still invent one, still build churches, still base their lives around "His" teachings. God doesn't even *need* to exist to change lives, because all the physical and cultural changes brought about on this planet by religion have been done by human beings who've never seen the real thing. For their purposes, an imaginary God would be just as useful.

I don't believe in "the supernatural" or "the paranormal" either. If something exists, or if it can happen, then it is normal and natural. If it doesn't exist, it doesn't exist. Even something like "magic". If magic is real, then it is included in physics- but physics still cannot be defied. If the "astral plane" is real, it is part of the Universe.

Assuming the worst though. What if God's a sadistic, deceptive, egomanical attention junkie (just like most Christians make him out to be) and, by quite reasonably choosing to not believe in or worship Him after He went out of His way to hide himself from me, I am condemning myself to an eternity of suffering and torment? Well, in that case, fuck you God; send me to Hell 'cause I'm probably going there anyway. At least I'll have plenty of intelligent company in damnation. And in such a scenario spend the rest of time up in heaven doesn't appeal to me- I'll have nothing to do with such a God. If our universe is run by such a childish and mean-spirited entity we're all screwed anyway.
I will continue to live my life as I see fit until a supreme being taps me on the shoulder and tells me in no uncertain terms to do otherwise. (Then I will seek out psychiatric treatment.) And if after I die I find I'm still alive somewhere, somehow, then I'm going to start caring.

Taz, science has said that we're accelerating as we're spreading out.. This does mean the universe is infinite for now. But, for all we know, something could destroy the universe tommorow. Also, as the universe spreads out the planets and suns will eventually spread out out so the universe will be one big dark lonley place in the future.. Looks like gods word will eventually fade out.

i can not see touch taste hear or smell god
i appear to have complete control over this body and the ability to think about anything i wish with this mind (though i cannot claim complete control over mind)
i expect everyone else to have a similar relationship to mind body and god. i suspect rampant claims of god talking to people to be a dream concoction, much like the past and future and any worry anyone ever has...these are all illusions the brain seems to play like a television screen.
relinquishing control of forgiveness to christ appears to be a comfortable denial of our own ability to forgive ourselves and responsibly choose to be whatever we desire and stand behind this as free will.
what need do we have of "forgiveness" of our "sins"
as far as I can see, these are words created by humans that don't mean anything if one can forgive oneself enough to BE every second.
it may be that i am OUT of god's favor and that is why HE has never talked to me, even as a child when i really tried.
or maybe i was not listening.
my faith was not the size of a mustard seed.
i think bible is a metaphor---everyone is a son or daughter of god, and is a god within their own universe to do or be anything, and this freedom has been constricted by human definitions, language, law, morality, and all the stupid shit society wants to make you eat (you are punished for crying as a baby, punished for getting dirt on the rug,etc)....psychoanalyst Karen Horney says the war of the REAL in the child against the social domination of the more powerful parents produces a neurotic phenomenon, the child must adapt strategies against these parental enemies of freedom, and eventually the child becomes a product of all these values, and the child grows into adulthood but still applies the same defensive structure (now veiled with mature adult defensive layers) against everything it encounters (i believe it could be said this fearful mechanism is the ego)
so in reality, the adult is still a petty child who is fearfully trying to reproduce his/her own values on everyone around him/her
whatever, Jesus said we should be like small children...i figure its beautiful enough we have a chance to be here and to choose to be either petty brats who slave for money or to be imaginative children who play ten hours a day and pay no mind to time or dirt
