Researchers Discover Why Grapefruit Juice Interacts With Drugs

TUESDAY, May 9 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they've identified the substances in grapefruit juice that can produce unwanted side effects when the juice is taken with certain drugs.

The discovery may make it possible to offer grapefruit juice that is free of these substances, called furanocoumarins, or add them to drugs to boost their effect, the researchers say.

People are routinely told by their doctors to avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking a variety of medications because of potentially dangerous side effects. For instance, the beverage should be avoided when taking certain blood-pressure or cholesterol-lowering drugs, as well as HIV medications, organ-transplant drugs and sedatives.

The reason: Grapefruit juice can cause these drugs to enter the blood stream more efficiently, thereby increasing the dose and effect -- and the potential for undesirable and even dangerous side effects.

i think i can feel it amplify the thc a bit,
is this just imagination or is there something to it ?

i think people combine grapefruit juice with dxm right ?

I swear it made my shrooms a lot stronger once...I think it was 3gs dry with some acid but still they hit pretty fuckin hard and I usually need 10+ gs dry

it most definitely works for opiates as well...actually I don't really like using it with oxy cause I get way to noddy...I prefer the mental stimulation oxy can provide without the nods(the only other time I got the nods REAL bad was when I had a pinched nerve in my back) don't know what the corrolation is but there was definitely a noticable increase on the nods...I couldn't even play gamecube...I was playing zelda and I kept noddin and thinking I was playing the game but I was noddin...it was VERY frustrating..I kept coming too realizin that link was standin still...my sister said I was mumbling jibberish as well lol...stupid stupid shit but kinda funny as well...but I"m off topic back to gf

Grapefruit juice works by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 systems of the liver. The "CYP's" are involved in the metabolism of many things (not just drugs, but also environmental toxins, etc.).

However, there are specific subtypes of CYP's which break down specific drugs. For instance, MDMA is usually broken down by CYP2D6, while grapefruit juice inhibits CYP3A4.

There is probably a pretty large overlap, but you would expect much more "potentiation" by grapefruit jucie of a drug broken down by CYP3A4 then say MDMA (CYP2D6).
