It certainly matters what you meant by writing this, think of each person on these boards as an individual, if you want to suggest otherwise .

You think it has been a focus on you? It never matters what 'you' meant by anything you do... because the observer can only interperate what is percieved, based on what they already know(ego). How could I even comprehend anything at all without it... well maybe if I was a new born.

the ego interprets reality. it's a filter. everything that goes through this filter is distorted in some way in its expression. also, we all experience things uniquely.

i'm advocating being a vessel for expression. when you experience something, let it flow through you. don't stop to think "i feel this, i think that." let it express itself through you, rather than situate the experience in terms of "i." if you feel thoughts moving through you, write them down. it doesn't matter if your ego agrees with them or not.

Here we go YET again:

Random poster: I heard or read somewhere that we should strive to be without ego. (usually by an author or Guru trying to gain something from his devotees or readers to boost his ego). I do not REALLY know if this state is attainable or desirable (to be desireless ), but I know that I want it, and MORE importantly, I want YOU to want the same thing.

Seems I just did a thread yesterday on preaching this sort of thing from an outsider's view. Using this sort of logic, I should write a book on climbing Mt. Everest even though I have never been higher than 12,000 feet. I want ALL of you to climb to greater heights and here are my recommendations...

Well I think it's all about how you percieve 'care'... if you think you should be rich, have many friends, posssesions, you know the things that make us happy... and you don't, it may seem that the universe hates you.
If your idea of caring is based on what you already have than it may love you, however that isn't it loving you, but you loving it. You have a life, food(i assume), a home, family, a body, air to breath, things to do, see, and even think about... if you really be honest with yourself, you will see the extent of this caring universe. Well even if that doesn't convince you and you still think its just some impersonal blob getting in your way... you can atleast care for the universe, but then it couldn't care less.

i will agree with one thing, i came to the conclusion a long time ago that yes , the universe does not care about you (me).

When you realize that it is about you and that you are the center of and creator of YOUR universe then you can realize where the care can and only will come from if you want to be cared for and about by it............YOURSELF!

Sorry moog, but it's hard not to be a judgemental sentient being focused on themselves... yet suggest otherwise... the I is what sustains us, and what motivates us... without the comfort of the I, then the individual doesn't look to the function of the "we".

You're suggesting that we attempt not to be human.

First off, I find this thread amusing.

A simple, yet well shrouded truth of the nature of reality is that a subjective I does not exist. It is impossible to know an I. When one attempts, in one's thoughts, to identify the I that summates said entity, the thought that identifies that identity is held seperate from that summated, conceptual entity. The observer continues to fragment when it is reflected inwards on itself. There is no possible way for the mind to hold an accurate image of itself.

Any sense of self is illusory. The actual self exists objectively, and cannot entirely be known to the self, as it is itself. Any mentally held image is incomplete and inaccurate, by the very fact that it is an image of the self, not The Self.

An illusory sense of self does not sustain us, it does not motivate us. In fact, an illusory sense of self only futher seperates ourselves from ourselves and our direct perception of reality (it interferes with that which sustains us and motivates us ). This, of course, does not mean that the self doesn't exist, it certainly does, but not as we know it. The mind, which is an aspect of the self, is not required to hold an illusory sense of self. It is not necessary for the functioning of the self. If a chair could think, does it require a mental construction of the chair in order to be the chair?

This, of course, does not mean that one does not sense the self. It means that one does not hold a mental image of the self that defines that self. We can sense the actual self directly, just as we can sense apparent aspects of our environment. Our self has a presence that is felt. Our mind tends to hold a concept that defines that sense of self. "I am that". Is that thought necessary? Indeed it isn't. You are naturally that, and can directly experience and sense that aspect of being that.

Don't ya'll see? It is the difference between observing and directly perceiving an experience, an aspect of reality, and of defining what that experience and that aspect of reality is. One is simply observing and experiencing as one naturally does, and the other is a projection onto reality.

Everyone has their different definition of the term ego, and to me, it means the illusory sense of self. It does not mean the mind, it does not mean any functional aspect of the mind (memory, etc.). It means the illusory sense of self, and when I see people speak of transcending it, I perceive that it is the illusory sense of self that they are speaking of transcending, as that is the only definition of ego that can possibly be transcended.

I have more to express on this, but I want to see what ya'll think of what I have just expressed before I go on. Does anyone not understand this?

A complete sentence needs a subject and and object to have meaning.

The pet store.      That means nothing by itself.

Corner of 5th and Hines.        That means nothing by itself.

The pet store is on the corner of 5th and Hines.

Now that means something to me.

I am about 2 miles away.
(About it's location relative to mine-what is about me)

I am not about to go into that neighborhood.
(about what neighborhoods I go to-what is about me)

I do not want you going into that neighborhood.
(about me and what I do not want)

I am not about to go shopping for a pet.
(About my not wanting to buy another pet-about me)

You do not need to go buy another pet there.
(About me thinking you do not need another pet-about me)

I need cat food
(About my needing to find a store to buy food for my cat-about my needs to care for my cat)

I never knew a pet store was there.
(About what I didn't know and now know-about me.)

About means "around". What is "about" you is what revolves around you.
It is how we reference ourselves and get through the day. What is about us is what gives life it's meaning or not. Your life having no meaning is still about your life having no meaning-it's now about your meaningless life-still about you.

Weather our self referencing with objects that are about/around us leads to an illusory sense of self is irrelevant.

Give me any statement in an attempt to say what is not about you Fire works. I will easily show you how it is about you even if its an illusory you.

You are saying that the illusory you exist independently from the object and therefor doesn't even exist.

I am saying that a real you DOES exist and it can only become self aware within reference of the object.

This goes back to the subject and object being the same thing and how self awareness is achieved.

If reality was just objects with no subjects the objects themselves would become the subjects of themselves.

Show me how you can really truly separate the two or how self awareness can be achieved without a subject-object relationship.

Awareness exists because of the self and what it is about.

if you think you can become selfless, all you have done is made your existence about your being selfless. It's still about you and your selflessness, the object, to you and what you are. That even makes your sense of selflessness an illusion.

Trying to separate yourself from anything is where the struggle of hell begins. I don't advise it.

Realizing what is about you is the first step towards self realization and towards the enlightenment of self awareness.

Living in self denial is where the struggle with the real self begins and the door way to hellish realities opens.

Living in self acceptance, self realization and enlightening ones self about the self through self awareness is entering paradise, the beauty of truth and where the gateway to heavenly realities begins.

Moog and whoever wants to preach self denial can all they want to. In consideration of the non illusory truth of you, of your being a Divine being,  I'm going to share with you all that, that is how hellish realities are created.

Look at Buddha and all that has been about him. :rotfl: Funny how an egoless guy can have so much in this world be about him huh? Monasteries, followers, books, fat bely statues, meditation techniques. This no self guy has made quite a self of his no self. :rotfl:

You can deny the divinity all about you all you want too. You can make believe you are separate from it all too if you so choose too. You can make believe that you don't exist, that you don't matter and life has no meaning. I ask, what are you left with?

Illusions about you!

*is still trying to decypher your post*

Seriously, I don't even know where to start replying to your post, and I've read it and re-read it several times now. I don't know what it is of my post that you are responding to. I haven't been able to conclude what it is that you are getting at. I'll attempt to summarize what points I was making so that hopefully we can pinpoint what is going on here.

I am saying that, if the mind the holding an idea of the self, of who one is, that sense of self is not actually that aspect of self that it is modeled after (if that aspect of self even actually exists - perhaps it is a misconception). I am saying that an idea that the mind holds of the self is an abstraction.

The self does exist. It exists naturally, without the need of definition. This self can be sensed, as it has a presence - we have a presence. We are capable of sensing presence. However, there is a difference between the presence of one's self, one's being, and the image of that presence of self that the mind may or may not hold.

One can observe and perceive the self. One does not need to define what the self is. The self exists beyond the realm of definition. Any image, any definition that the mind holds is an abstraction, it is not the actual state of existance that the abstraction represents. That state of existance can be perceived and experienced without the need of filtering it through an abstraction. One's awareness exists before it is filtered through the mind, and it is possible to be conscious of that awareness, of one's state of being, before it is fragmented through the mind. Awareness has conscious presence, awareness has being.

This is why I propose that one observes and perceives the self as it is without projecting onto that self. This does not mean that we do not play the games that we do, this doesn't mean that we actively seek to act and to create. This means that we are conscious and aware of these aspects of our experience as they naturally exist, first and foremost. There is a difference between naturally being aware of oneself and of the actions one takes and having one's experience of that state of existance obstructed and fragmented through the mind and its projections and definitions of that experience. The more awareness that we consciously feel the presence of, the more full of life we are. The mind comes after that consciousness, not beforehand.

Hey cool. In here, you did say "a self" exists! Step one realisaion for dealing with it and coming out of self denial.

Thats really all I am out to highlight here as being in self denial is a bitch of a place to be. Where self denial is being promoted I will be there when I can promoting self acceptance because, it's about US!
