Auto-SummaryThis forum post reflects on the author's complex relationship with religion, shaped by their Catholic upbringing and analytical mindset. They criticize institutional religion for promoting control and violence, while acknowledging a desire for a higher power. The author questions the morality of organized religion, citing historical abuse by the Catholic hierarchy. Despite their skepticism, they maintain a desire to live a moral, principled life and help others. They also touch on personal beliefs about the afterlife and evolution, suggesting a deeper philosophical inquiry that leads them to feel like an "animal on shrooms" during altered states. The post emphasizes the subjective nature of belief and the author's ongoing struggle to reconcile their feelings with objective evidence.
Hello all, and MUCH RESPECT for EVERYBODY stating their own instilled beliefs without being disrespectful of anyone else's beliefs.... Much respect to you all....
What made me think of this question was from thinking about the religious irony in the movie "Sleepers".... The priest took the stand and swore on the Bible to God to tell the truth, then lied on the stand.... Was it justified by the actions in learning the whole story...? It would be hard to make that call.... It was a situation that would be of great debate, and one that I had never seen before....
About me and my background.... I was born and raised Catholic in a very non-religious home.... I was forced to go to church, and religious education BY MYSELF until the age of 18.... My parents are very good people, but I think they did wrong in making me go by myself.... I think religion is more supposed to be a family orientated thing, and making a child go to church and religious education because "I had to when I was a kid" was a wrong decision on my parent's part.... It built a deep resentment in myself towards religion for a long time.... Looking at the Catholic religion now as an "informed" adult, I view it as another form of control and governmental politics - if you will, and I just don't believe in some of the "rules" that Catholics are supposed to abide by.... It is amazing to me that in days past so many acts of violence were committed by Catholic high-archy in the name of God, and dealt out MUCH PAIN and PUNISHMENT to the "sinners".... And it still goes on to this day as you hear in the news about the young TORTURED boys by the selfishness of the ACCEPTED "divinely" corrupt.... I had in my signature on my posts when I entered this community: "Money = Power = Corruption = More Power = More Money - A pyramid scheme with a foundation built upon the root of all evil, and topped off with a little corruption.... The Pope himself is adorned with a lot of gold, and in the eyes of the priesthood, I was thinking that "worldly possessions" that were not based off of necessity, were not allowed.... I would think that a true leader of a religion would wear worthless tin jewelry (if any at all), and would give the unneeded "precious metals" out to the hungry starving people of the poorer nations in the form of food.... Therefore, I would not say that I am a Catholic now, but in the times I "wanted" to believe in a religion, I just wanted to believe that there was an all knowing God - and not necessarily a "right" religion to believe in....
I have struggled in my beliefs more-so in the later part of my life.... I am an Engineer, and a very analytical and almost scientific in terms of thought process.... It is very hard for me to believe in something that is not a proven fact.... But then again struggle with "Faith", and believing that we are all part of something much more than we can "see".... Again tho~, my own personal beliefs are not clear cut and defined, and really seem to change based on some of the things that have happened in my life....
It was stated in one post as I read thru all of the responses: to live with good in your heart, and God will find you.... I have never heard it put that way, and had always thought that if you have accepted God into your heart, the good in life will find you.... I have only truly prayed once in my life, and it was recently.... My uncle has cancer and soon after I found out, I prayed for him.... With the help of medicine, he went into remission.... There is no way for me to know if my praying for him actually did any good, but somehow it gave me piece of mind to do that simple thing for him.... It is really all I could do as a mortal man....
I personally try to lead a morally positive life, and try my best to do good by others.... Leading by example, and trying my best not to hurt other's - physically or mentally.... I would never raise my hand in anger towards a woman or a man, unless it was to defend myself or another "innocent" from physical harm.... (This does not include smacking the ass of a woman friend in a playful manner...! LoL) I try my best to contribute my best to society by taking care of my responsibilities as a "civilized" human on this planet, and take great pride in putting my name on my work, and standing by it.... I am somewhat humble, and have no problem in admitting that I have made a mistake when it happens.... I also try my best to do the "right thing" when not in the eyes of others, and try my best NOT to judge others in their mistakes or personal beliefs.... In my moral beliefs, and understanding of right and wrong, I think that these are some of the main character traits in being a "True Man".... Wiccan Seeker, I did see your post about this topic, but just didn't have time to put my 2 cents in at that time.... Plus, I think a lot of people had already summed up what my thinking was, and my reply would have been somewhat redundant....
This is all a very subjective topic, and I sometimes have a very hard time deciding "what to believe in".... There are so many unanswered questions that we all might, or might not find out the answers too when we die.... We all want to know the answers, and I think this very fact makes some people have a firm belief in religion, so as to believe that we will truly find out all of the answers from a God when we die....
Some have stated that Hell is here on earth, and for some, it truly is.... And it is sad to think that an all knowing God would allow this, and not step in to help give guidance or true help to the people that have requested it.... It also seems contradictory that a God that gives us life would put us in a place that is knee deep in temptation and truly evil intents of others....
Having talked all about religion here based off of one question/idea that I "received" last night, I had a much deeper "profound" trip that made me "see" a different light of a possible explanation of evolution.... I think that I have always been torn in my beliefs, and maybe that is why I think about this stuff when I trip.... One thing that is always consistent, is it makes me feel like an animal on shrooms.... Not in a violent way, but in a primal heightened sense kinda~ way.... Makes me wonder what all of this is, and how, and why....
I will go look for the other trip thread that I posted, and re-post it here.... It is a little off the original topic, but it will shed some light into why I still remain torn in what to believe in.... Sorry for the length of this thread, I am sure the next one will double the size of my post...!!!
