I have a quick question.

If you examine any bleief can't you completely destroy it?

I mean, ideas you have about yourself, the world, or the universe that make you feel secure or "right" can inevatibly be crushed, you can be shown an opposite idea that is just a reasonable as yours, so eventually you come up with nothing don't you?

Arguably.

You might decide that there are some things you can call true, or you might not.

If you examine any bleief can't you completely destroy it?

There are three basic things to look at:

1. Basis - what is the underlying structure that supports the belief. If there is none the belief has no value.

2. Internal cohesion or consistency. If the belief contradicts itself, then it has no value.

3. Demonstrability or the ability to accurately predict future outcomes.

Many ideas regularly posted here fail miserably on these simple criterion which is why I destroy them like weeds.

#3 is the only flexible one, depending on the topic. This flexibility usually relates to random events or items far removed in time and/or space where conjecture is the best that we will ever do.

Wwwwwwwwwwwwoah there swami!

Do you think your weed wacking posts and replies destroy the beleifs of others?

All they do is cut your own lawn short. What you are doing with your weed wacker is showing us how you care for your own lawn. You're just destroying your own beleifs about things others beleive in.

After you come through with your weedwacker, I bet 99.9% of the beleifs you hack remain in tact by the beleiver.

I'm sitting here thinking that you actually beleive you have gotten me to change my beleifs directly through your wacks at mine.

WOW!

"you can be shown an opposite idea that is just a reasonable as yours, so eventually you come up with nothing don't you? "

or..everything depending on how you look at it.

I see what you are saying, and it's good to be careful with beliefs, we must take specific care of our lawn, but remember not to cut everything in site, as we will destroy flowers as well.

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Dear Jiggy,

Can you not respond directly to the concept that you disagree without the (false) psychic reading and fantasy play? Should we all strive to emulate you by bypassing the universally accepted code of philosophic discussion?

Everyone should closely examine and question their beliefs. It is important that we remain somewhat grounded to function properly.

Bill Hicks had this joke where here would say; "Confucius asked us 'what is the sound of one hand clapping?'" and then he would close his thumb in on his fingers to make a clapping sound with one hand. "Fuck Confucius, it's time to evolve ideas..."

"If you examine any bleief can't you completely destroy it?"

What about the belief that if you examine any belief you can completely destroy it.

Can that be destroyed? :P

Is there anything that wasn't put together that science can not take a part to the quantum level?

Remember being a kid putting something together with your tinker toys and having your little sib come along and take it a part? argggg

I did read that young children go through a phase of taking stuff a part as it helps them to understand how things were put together and that this is the natural progression into becoming a creative builder. It's a fundamental of early child development.

And may I note, that as children, after we created our tinker toy master pieces and got bored with them, in our drive to create something anew to play with, we ussually took them apart ourselves and reconstructed the pieces on our own.
