Some Questions Out of Curiosity...
    #1812738 - 08/14/03 07:53 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I heard before, that every religion started off as some sort of initial cult.

I was wondering, does anyone know how many individuals it takes for a group to be considered a cult?

...And then, how many does it take for a cult to be recognized as a religious community?

Based on the info I have heard, it seems that cults can be looked upon as budding religions... What would be everyone's view of that?

I don't have any for this... That is why I am asking the questions: Perhaps someone here has heard or read something about it.

The part you asked for a source is a conclusion that I just made up based on something I heard.

As far as "budding" religions go... Not every bud transforms into a healthy flower... Many die out.

It is not the small size of the group that earns it cult status, but the amount of disdain (due to newness or difference or perceived threat of the teachings) from the already-established religious groups. The Moonies and the Hare Krishna movements had quite large followings in the USA as compared to say, the Manson Family or the Koreshians, but were still considered cults.

...And then, how many does it take for a cult to be recognized as a religious community?
When they gain enough political clout, money, and prominent members and other groups recognize that they are here to stay.

A lot also depends upon how the group operates. Are members allowed to keep their possessions, or must they turn them over to the group. Can members of the group maintain contact with family members. Are the members required to have sexual relations with the leader(s), etc...

There was a really good post a while back about identifiying 'bad gurus'. Lemme do a search real quick and see if I can find it...

Here is the page: http://www.globalideasbank.org/BOV/BV-557.HTML

Some cults, such as $cientology, are no longer cults because they bought out the cult watch groups and took their name off of the list. One needs to be careful...

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.
