When I was in my sophomore year of college, I saw Tool play live in my hometown. I was about 5 rows back from the front of the stage, and it was the best concert I have ever been to in my life.

Think for yourself, question authority.

It seems so banal, yet it is such a good message.

Nope. The very act of "questioning authority" presupposes some basic existential and epistemological beliefs about the nature of reality. The fact that I exist and am self-aware proves I do not truly question everything. Avoiding truisms is impossible for human cognition; it all comes down to what you choose to believe and whether you're willing to replace those beliefs with new ones in order to gain a different, but no less dependent, perspective.
