I confess that I'm struggling to keep up with my old cultures . Temp depression makes me want to kill them with bleach.

Hi Folks
I’m not going to assume anyone recognizes me or cares I’m back. Nonetheless, there are probably a few who sent me PMs or maybe were waiting on my side of a trade when I completely disappeared- for more than two years I think. So I thought I’d apologize and explain a bit and say that I plan to be dropping in to the Shroomery at least occasionally going forward.

So what happened?
Mush Cult was definitely a hobby for me - not a side hustle, or an attempt at developing into a job (gourmet or otherwise). On top of being a Dad (to 2 20 somethings) a husband, and a career white collar professional, I (we) added being full time elder care to the mix. Basically when my wife retired we moved her folks into our basement. Her Dad was pretty independent (but by no means fully independent) her Mom was entirely dependent on us - even having trouble getting in and out of her chair.  There was constant drama - her folks getting sick, going in and out of the hospital… my wife crumbling under the toxic influence of her Mom who was super demanding but would never say please or thank you. I mean what kind of entitled fuck has you taking them shopping, wheeling around in a wheelchair, cooking, cleaning, bathing, whipping their ass - literally! And then refuses to be polite?!

Anyway, I digress. It was A LOT, so all that ate into time for my mush cult hobby. In addition, 1-3 days a week a nurse or social worker or some kind of support person would come in to their space (our house) and potentially see all my mush cult stuff in the spare room down there. It was giving me anxiety to think one of them nigh decide to “do the right thing” and tell their friend or brother who is a cop that there is a “grow op / drug lab” at such and such an address.  All together, it just got to be too much.  I was going pretty much full tilt - a lot of exotics, some nice Cubensis isolations, some interesting edibles (Pleurotis Nebrodensis & Maitake), and then one day something extra at my day job got added on and or some nosey helper person asked “what kind of mushrooms are those?” And mentally I just kind of snapped! I locked the door on my cultivation space… and didn’t do anything for 6 months or more.
Dozens of cultures on agar plates, several LCs spinning endlessly on stir plates, a dozen or more inoculated big spawn bags, 30-50 jars of grain spawn in various states of colonization, 4-6 tubs in fruiting. They all just sat in there with nature running its course!  About 6-8 months later I opened the door and at least threw out the tubs, and bags, then closed the door again!

I did not even mention my two All Americans - filled with jars grain spawn that eventually after a year or more started to smell…

It was horrible in so many ways. I feel really bad for the folks who I was supposed to send something to for a trade or a promised gift. I just ghosted everyone!  It would be too dramatic to call it a psychological break, but it kind of was to be honest.

Here is the good news. After 2 + years my wife’s folks moved back to Nebraska and have professionals coming into their home M-F and their 55 year old son who never really left home to take care of them on weekends.

They moved out for good about 10 months ago. Other good news - I retired about a month ago. I put in 23 years there, another 5-7 years other places and of course all sorts of other jobs since I was like 15. I’m 62. Started mushroom cultivation in the late 70s 🤪. I have a comfortable pension so now I can get back to exploring mycology with plenty of time.

I’ll be going through a huge backlog of PMs, making good on trades and gifts if I can. I sincerely apologize to those I left hanging and wondering where I was / what happened!

I've been hoping for your return.

Don't think I'll ever forget you and would never be pissed about a trade anyway (we didn't have one).

I confess that my posts per day, expressed as a ratio, would be 10/3. That would be very improper though so I digress.

also, I confess that I ran about 18 tubs and got fuck all out of them
literally 5 measley fruits that looked all bent up and shite and I didn't even bother drying them, just chucked them as I thought better was coming.
it didn't
regretting that now as I'm 100% out and could really do with some for microdosing
ah life eh? :nojustno:

Oy.... I have been so busy with work stuff and life stuff - I'm still trying to deal with my parents' estate stuff, 18 months later. This has put a big dent in my culting activities. I have a few jars colonizing now, and I sincerely hope that I won't dick around and let them sit around too long once they are ready. That happened to my last run of jars, spawned like 2 out of 6. 3 of them are still sitting upstairs in the lab - including 1 that was dirty, but it managed to grow a whole mushroom that looks like it kicked out spores.

I confess,

I've been away from cultivation for years now, but still have three square meters of cultivation gear, packed away. And, I still order spores from sporeworks but never put them to agar anymore. The knowledge that I could have gotten in trouble wasn't really what made me stop, it  was mostly that I can order an oz for 40$ and get it in two days nowadays. With all my extra time I've become a very good mushroom forager, my dehydrators are still running for weeks on end.

I have another confession. For the last few months I've been brewing fruit wines and distilling them down to spirits. I just learned today, that's also illegal where I live. Ive been telling everybody about my new hobby...smh

Last confession: Also learned I'm Nero-divergent, and probably all my favorite shroomery folks are too. (The hyper-fixations is one of the main tells)

I'm not here as often as I once was. But it's funny how you can miss people you've never met and never intended to ever meet. I kinda miss all you guys.
