That is a serious milestone…
It sneaks up on you then accelerates!

I confess that I went to order another box of 500 cell treat grip ring Petri dishes (wonderful!) and Amazon told me something like “you have ordered this product 4 times” and I practically fell off my chair! Whut?!!!

I’ve probably ordered 5 or six more since then!
I need to become more thoughtful about how many plates and varieties I get going at the same time.  I definitely don’t put all of those plates of mycelium onto grains!

MycoMadness!

I don't think I'll ever buy disposable plates, it is just so incredibly wasteful.

I agree
I confess I feel very guilty about tossing all that plastic.
I’ve tried several varieties of PP5 Petri dishes and I have found one that I can live with in terms of visibility - not great, but acceptable. I also have 3-4 varieties of glass Petri dishes and of course the visibility with those is amazing!

However with both the PP5 and glass plates - they don’t seem to be vented and so my growth stalls after about a week.

I’m still searching…

That's odd, I use petriq soda lime plates and borosilicate dishes, no issues with venting.
What plates are you buying that aren't vented, out of interest.

I can't seem to get motivated after coming back.
I look at the plates and now everything is to the edge.
Can I just grab stuff inside that looks nice?

BTW I like these Corning® Soda Lime Silica glass petri dish - CLS70165101

How's the finish on the lids of those? Somewhat distorted? Fairly sooth?

I bought some Pyrex 3160-101 dishes off Amazon and there were concentric marks in the surface that made polystyrene plastic dishes look stellar. (Wondering if I got some shitty Amazon-ized version cause their price was so much less than lab suppliers.)

Boom! There ya go, I think Amazon doesn't care that they're selling cheap imitations.

Edit: Oh, I love working with these plates, they're beautiful!
When I dry them off, I feel like a bartender polishing the fine crystal.

@ DERRAYLD - I can’t say for sure other than I was looking for cheaper ones (4-5 USD / covered dish) I bought some on Amazon and some on eBay. I also have 3-4 of those metal sleeves for putting stacks of empty dishes in the PC).

@ Inthepit - thank you for the link. Perhaps my first mistake was trying to buy cheaper plates. The soda lime seems like a good compromise. I generally would let the plates cool to room temp and pour agar at 140-150F. Do you think that would shock the soda lime glass bad enough to crack?

Confession: my last agar pouring session, I slipped and slopped about 1/2 a plate worth of agar right onto my flowhood filter!

I use soda lime and they are as clear as borosilicate petris.

Should be fine if you leave the hood on forever -- it was sterile agar, right?  :loldongs:

Had to throw away twenty freshly poured plates today. Little contam around the same edge in all of them. I was tired and surely fucked them up.

I made an ez-dial mono to cheer myself up -- am going to drink some more coffee and pour a fuck ton more plates. Carefully.

I also freshened up my bleach bottle, my soap bottle, and my water bottle. I birthed a cake that had been soaking for 24hrs into the ez-dial and put it on the shelf. Waiting on a bunch of ziplock bags filled with goodness (hopefully).

Fucking sad about those plates!!!

Very first time I tried agar I put the hot ass jar of agar in my SAB right out the PCer, tried to pour 5 mins later, burned my hand and dropped the agar spilled half of it all over the inside of my SAB. Was almost in tears pouring my plates because I was so frustrated with myself. Only a few ended up contaminating tho lol.

Learned alot that day...

One of those things being agar is really easy to cleanup after it cools.
