Confession: my last agar pouring session, I slipped and slopped about 1/2 a plate worth of agar right onto my flowhood filter!

Damn i dropped a stack of 10 just poured plates and and some drops fell to the filter, i was panicking, what did you do to clean it?
Well at first I was horrified thinking I’d dumped more agar on there than I did (and I might be buying a new 2x4 HEPA filter). I kept going with my session (another 30-45 minutes). Then I shut her down and noticed a few things that made it a lot better… I guess because the fan was blasting and I have one of those metal grids that protects the filter - by the time it was slowed down / split up by the grid the air flow blew most of it back. What did get past was dry as a bone and I figured it was sterile when it hit the filter. It looks like it might just flake off over time - the filter is made of glass fibers so it would not have really absorbed much. I have a very dry climate most of the year so there is no way the agar will rehydrate and become a good home for bacteria or mold spores… so I’m crossing my fingers for now. If I start crying about my miserable contamination rate in the coming months we will know my optimism was misplaced,
What I was planning to do to clean up was to get some boiling hot water and pour (or squirt with a clean syringe) onto the part where the agar was spilled. After softening it up a bit this way - then turn it on and pour Squirt boiling hot water again - hoping air pressure would push the agar and water out to the surface. I don’t know if this would work. I would advise you to take my approach unless you live in a very humid environment.
Good Luck!

Dude… I think you might be onto something good there! Unless you are dealing with a species that has a very fragile mycelium (like Panaeolus for example), early shaking probably just speeds up colonization. At the very least I’d wait until you see good leap off from your inoculate.

I would wait until it starts to colonize some grains before shaking, but that's my preference, I have no other reason for doing it, it just seems like good practice.

I like to ignore A2G for about a week then mix. I love bags. Whole plate smooshed into a 5lb bag of grain and a massage/shake on week 1 and week 2 done week 3 or so.
I confess I haven't even cleaned the last several dozen jars of rot out cause fuck jars. Bags 4 Lyfe

My temps are in the mid 60s and I basically have to shake twice if I want any normal colonization times.
Once at about 7 days after A2G (when growth is about size of a golf ball). Second shake is typically anywhere from another 7-14 days after that.
I’m also cautious about the grains on the top of the jar, so sometimes I’ll throw one final third shake in there for good measure.

I agree, that is what I meant by good leap off. Mycelium firmly established on the grain kernels immediately around it. This pretty much assured that the mycelium will have penetrated the surface of the grain and even if the mycelial threads are broken off, new ones will emerge from within the grain. In practice for me this means … shaking at dime size instead of quarter of 50 cent piece size. Another advantage of an early shake is that If there is contamination brewing somewhere other than the surface of the jar you will discover that 4-5 days earlier and can start over if needed be.

There was a whole conversation about early shaking months (shit maybe a year) back, I think with lotkid.
It’s kind of an art form based on how fast each culture/jar moves but I’m into the early shake too.
I usually let the myc jump off and get 2-3 rows of wbs covered before shaking. All about getting a ton of inoculation points asap.

Some of the best advice I'd gotten early on. I've been using SSLC for a while now and it's so much faster. I don't think I can ever go back to A2G/G2G.

The early shake hasn't done me wrong yet!
I just make sure to wait for something to get going and then I'm all about exponentially expanding 'noc points!
Dr. M -- I am seriously looking forward to taking a plunge into the worlds of LI/LC but as a rule for myself, I want to get solid clean spawn and a few more tubs under my belt first.

Sounds like a good game plan. LC is just as easy as A2G and G2G gets eliminated from the process. One less chance of contam. If you know that your dropping clean plates to grain, be confident that you'll drop clean wedges to LC. I always had a bit of a bacterial issue until I stopped using oats and switched to wheat.
I confess that I wish I would have used wheat from the very beginning. It hydrates in about 15-20 minutes on a hard boil and steam dries just as fast. I've noticed larger, healthier fruit in my tubs which I assume to be because they're completely free of the bacteria problem that I got with oats. My jars break up effortlessly with a light tap or two on the palm of my hand.

Lol I was listening to an interview with a 93 year old lady and they were talking about time moving quicker as you get older.
She says “yep, I’m 93 and breakfast comes every 15 minutes”.
