Because making grain is a learning curve. Learning how to make agar and work with it is a hell of a lot easier than learning how to make proper grain.

Anyways, yeah your plates overfed

I’ve tried something new with my Martha grow to take advantage of side pinning
They look a lot better in the Martha than the tubs that’s for sure
I’m not sure why I keep on growing. These probably just exhaust what spawn I have left as the high is too inconsistent.
Each mushroom is a different potency

This is kind of strange normally when I do this, just the exposed areas will fruit for some reason the orcas don’t like to fruit in the open
The Martha probably isn’t at exactly what the mushrooms want to fruit, just a fun little experiment🤷🏻‍♂️

Why are you using all that shit dude? Don't do that. Just use coir. Or coir and verm. The rest is 100% useless for ochra.

If you REALLY want to play around and make your own speciality to sub. Just play around with your own ratios. Just at the end of it, you need to have something loose and fluffy that can still hold a lot of water. And then of course it should be at field capacity. Seriously though, fuck gypsum 👎

Do you think gypsum is actively harmful, or just completely unnecessary?

I like gypsum in my grain soak when using WBS. Helps with the sticking/clumping. Not bad in a casing layer either. But not helpful in the bulk media and not necessary overall. Can do fine without IMO.

First grow. Are these kinda small? All of them have like a slightly fuzzy feet, I’ve opened the lid more for more FAE. And why are someone completely dark? Should I wait longer to harvest since these have turned flat?

I apologize if this has already been discussed earlier in this thread, but Ochras really interest me and I was wondering if any experienced growers can chime in here about any Ochra strains and differing chracteristics emerging through this novelty cultivated species? I've heard of Black Cap Ochra, and would LOVE to get my hands on it but unfortunately spores are frowned upon in my state, so difficult enough as it is to find any vendors.

For Black cap or any other varieties, have you noticed any difference in growth, potency or any other characteristics that go beyond visual?

They can grow for quite some time after the veil breaks.

From my experience growing Ochra, many of those ingredients you listed are unecessary. Most people here just grow Ochras like cubes, on straight coir, although they seem to like a smaller proportion of grain to coir than is typical for cubes, like a 1:4 ratio is what people seem to do well with from the anecdotal evidence of many growers. All the things you listed seem like overkill, and may actually do more harm than good by providing a highly nutritious spawn that is prone to contamination.

Some are completely dark because they're dropping spores, and the air currents around the caps carry some of the spores above the caps, where they settle and darken the tops. While you can find ochra strains that drop few or no spores (I have one), most tend to heavily dump spores as they mature. They're easy to make spore prints with.

How do I know when they’re done and should I wait to harvest them all at the same time?

You can search just this thread for "when to harvest", the first result and the next couple have advice.

Note that ochras were referred to as natalensis / "nats" until a year or two ago. Natalensis is a different species that got mixed up with ochras, but cultivating actual psilocybe natalensis is pretty rare, and most discussion you'll find about nats is referring to what we now call ochras.

I harvest before they get too covered in spores, but you can harvest whenever you like really. I harvest everything because I prefer to submerge the substrate when setting up for the next flush.

I always try to harvest just before they spit spores but every time I'm about to do so I blink and miss the opportunity:mad2:

This is one of my earlier Ochra grows. I went to bed at 12pm thinking I'll harvest when I get up and woke up the next day at around 7am to this:awesomenod:

I gotta say this looks very pretty but it was a pain in the ass to mist the hydrophobic surface the spores created. I didn't know scraping the top was an option at the time.

Question? I S2B the grain I am not sure is Nat or Ochra. (I’m guessing Ochra) is Coir ok for both? I did a 3:1 ratio with a small layer of coir to cover any grain. Don’t need casing or anything right? Do Nats and Ochras grow in the same substrate/conditions?

Here is a pic of the Myc if anyone has any input on if it’s an Ochra? Only reason I’m not sure, is it came from someone with a very large genetic collection, and came with other exotics like psy. Cyan, tamps, pan cyans, stuff like that. The friend is also involved in academics in a concurrent field, and is very active in expanding his genetic library. (He is teaching a study abroad program currently and we are not super close or I would just ask). I’m obviously growing it out to find out, but it’s fun to hypothesize.

Thanks 🙏

Take a look at what phenodreamer said Here a few comments back.

Ochras, nats, cubes and many more will grow on straight coir and need no fancy recipes. I use coir or coir/verm if I'm low on coir but honestly a 1:3 grain/coir ratio or perhaps even a 1:4 does the trick pretty damn nicely.

I don't think anyone can tell you for sure if it's  Ochras or nats at this stage but when the mushrooms pop up some of the skilled members here might be able to help you figure it out.

I think I'd ask your "friend" even if you don't know him very well, he's the only one who can provide some solid information at this stage.

I'm having the same problem with the same huge overlay! I've never had this problem before from ochra. I put it into fruiting like a week ago and I'm seeing no pins. Just this.

Can anyone tell me what I should do please.

Should I put tubs of Ochra immediately into fruiting in future?

I'm confused. I thought Ochra was just the new name for Nats and that they're the same thing? Ahhh looked into it and found that it was given the wrong name at the start.
