Re: The official Psilocybe natalensis/ ochraceocentrata thread. [Re: pickle_jars]
    #29618197 -

my first grow. started with a lc and used the pf tek. two small boxes where i did a ratio of 1:4 with the substrate, 2/3 coco and 1/3 vermiculite.

same with the big box, which i set up way later than the small ones, but there i had a colonized grain bag that was sitting around for a while, waiting for some action.

so again 1:4, but this time i also added a little bit of horse manure.

the small boxes are taking a loooong time, i am pretty sure that i gave them way too much fae, had the lid sitting on top, but changed it to a trash bag which i poked some holes in. thank you bodhi.

they are doing better now. these fuzzy pins are thriving ever since.

the big box i just kept the lid on most of the time and let it air out several times, but that thing was too moist. constant pooling. trash bag, holes, now it is happy and gaining on the other ones.

i am a little anxious cause i will have to go to the woods for a few days and need to find some tactic to keep them happy.

very very curious about them.

Learn to use the search engine.

You're in a thread about ochras. Read it. As I mentioned before you can search within just the current thread. There's a ton of info here, and you can limit results to just particular people (or just TCs), just posts within the last X years, just posts with images, etc.

People are going to get very frustrated with you if repeatedly ask the same questions, particularly when you're directly responding to comments that answered them. Can you see why that would give the impression that engaging with you is just a waste of time?

Edit: See Notes on growing Psilocybe natalensis, quotes from around Shroomery by Moopers. It's a couple years old and could use some updates, particularly about the "natalensis" vs. "ochraceocentrata" thing, but it's still a great starting place, and it covers most of your questions.

i did used the search engine. what i found was that you cultivated and tested using miraculix, so i simply asked you directly for more insights as you can maybe say more than what your comment already says, as this was just one grow there, and you didn't explain 100% of the experience.

i'm searching for people that cultivated these species and what are their thoughts about it, the best way of doing that is of course, asking these people directly about how it was the experience. this is not off-topic, invasive or whatsoever, i just want to know more about it.

no need to be a jerk about it, i didn't do anything wrong and you are getting pissed off for nothing.

Ochras are fun. They make me want to dance.

@Chiron

Reading between the lines of your post it seems like you're looking for the 'perfect' mushroom to grow via questions about alkaloyds vs weight, etc... I'll tell you now, it doesn't really work that way. People have their preferences. Some mushrooms are easier to grow. Others more potent. Some split the middle. Others produce potent fruits prolifically, but only once a year.

My advice to you would be this:

Forget about potency. Learn to grow cubes really well and branch out to exotics slowly. You can get all the genetics you want just by being  chill and posting grow pics. You can literally try them all and make the decision for yourself.

After enough experience, you'll figure out what mushrooms you like the best

This person put together a journal of probably more information than you would ever want to know about Ochras (it says Natalensis but that was before the name ochraceocentrata was adopted)

I would agree, 9/10.  In my experience it’s hard to have a bad time on Ochras unless you just completely ignore set and setting.  For me at least they are really low body load, fun visuals and really pleasant, clear-headed high on the comedown.  Only thing I would knock them for is you probably aren’t going to have any earth-shattering revelations because (again, for me at least) they don’t create introspection the way some other species do.

If you have very specific questions it makes sense to ask in thread, but for broad things like
Quote:
they have a good yield? is easier than cubes? are resistant to contamination?

it depends on your own trade-offs and priorities as much as anything. It's hard to say more than generalities like "Cultivating actual natalensis is rare, but ochras are common, pretty easy to grow, and tend to be more potent than classic cubes."

They seem easy to grow. I haven't had issues with major overlay, but I've either grown in shoeboxes with a reasonably high proportion of coir to spawn (around 0.5-0.75L spawn to 2L coir) or top-fruited in jars with a coir top-layer. I may have also gotten lucky with non-overlaying genetics from multispore. Mine have seemed to prefer a little more airflow than cubes, but whether that means keeping a shoebox lid ajar or what depends on your climate. They did well in a water tub. They also didn't seem to mind a cold (59F / 15C) basement in the winter.

They can be easy to work with on agar, because the myc tends to be rhizomorphic often enough that it's easy to visually distinguish from mold. I haven't worried too much about it being resistant to contam, I just transfer away from it and focus on clean growth.

Left: Rhizo (ropy) ochra myc on a low-nutrition plate. Right: The exact same culture, on a high-nutrition plate. More tomentose (furry), but still looks more ordered/organized than mold growth. (The halo is the light behind the plate, not contam.)

They seem decently potent. Multispore grows will have variation, but it seems like the average potency within the gene pool is higher than with average cubes. They are potent enough, for my purposes. If you grow them you'll likely soon have enough mushrooms that maximizing potency won't be a priority. I'm mainly interested in measuring potency because I don't want to take way more than planned and have a terrible time. If I want more potency I'll just put slightly more in my tea.

Almost all ochras I've grown have been heavy spore dumpers (like the Tao's here), so making prints is easy. I found one particular culture that doesn't drop spores, and I've tended to grow that because it makes harvesting less messy. I'll probably go back to prints for multispore eventually though, I'm curious about what other variety will appear.

I can't be sure what I'm saying is universal to ochras, and other people here have probably grown 10-100x as many as I have, but that's been my consistent experience. They seem like a beginner-friendly non-cube species. You might like them more than cubes, you might not.

There's a good list here of ochra vs. nat traits.

I haven't seen any reports from people consuming actual natalensis. Unless the poster is aware of the nats vs. ochras issue and really explicit that they mean natalensis, it's very likely they're talking about what we now call ochras.

Edit: Piggybacking on your question, has there been any follow-up on whether Transkei is actually an ochra or cubensis (or something more nuanced)? I thought I saw something about Alan doing genetic testing and/or Yoshi's patreon had a post about it, but when I came back later to possibly join the patreon was gone. Is it like "Natal Super Strength", in that it was distributed as a cube but later testing showed it was actually an ochra all along? This Transkei description sounds like it could be an ochra (overlaying, potency, the first picture) but I've seen a pretty wide range of phenos in the bit of Transkei I've grown and some seemed more ochra-like, some more cube-like.

I have had a similar experience recently while trying to isolate some colored cap varieties.  I ended up with a line that produces almost no spores to the point that I can barely see them on foil when trying to make prints.  The same line has the tendency to readily fruit on agar.  And since I just complained about very light spores I found one that dropped spores on the plate while I was out of town for the last month.

I wouldn't go too far to call it perfect, just a good "effort/benefit ratio" strain.

What i found in my research was something like this:

Ochras are easy to grow
They are easier than cubes to most people
They don't seem to care too much about temperature variations
Are very contamination resistant
have average to high yields, based on pictures
They are a different species that had a common ancestor with cubes

I also searched in hyphae cups and here in the forum about potency.

In hyphae cups, the strain Natal Super Strength(that was ochra's past name), is generally on par with high potency strains like APE

Here on the forum(this thread) there's miraculix tests from 2 guys if I'm not mistaken, that also have similar results to the hyphae cups.

In personal potency reports, people also generally says that they had underestimated the potency, and that are definitely an above average in potency.

only by that, this already means they are worth it more than like 95% of strains. by being easier than cubes while retaining same potency already make them very interesting. now by being easier, and having potency on par with the most potent cube strains is even more interesting.

and i also want exactly about what people prefer, that's my point. picking insights from who had the experience, before i test it myself.

I'm doing very broad question because i want you, and everyone that cultivated ochras, to describe their experiences, that's it. so they can use any criteria they want, and talk about what they want to talk and what was the experience overall.

i liked what you described here, thanks for sharing.

for what i've seen, yes, both strains African Transkei and Natal Super Strength are ochras.

this is because these strains was first confused with cubes. what this means there's no cubes in south africa as far as we know at the moment. so if you pick a strain from south africa, that is similar to cubes, is pretty much sure it is ochraceocentrata.

ochraceocentratas and cubes also seem to share a common ancestral, that´s why they are so similar, and also so interesting, as it is possible that in the future, people can incline in cultivating more ochras than cubes because it is easier and are more potent than average.

Hey you’re a bit new so I’ll try and help. Generally people don’t like to talk about their own preferences and style in a context where it could be construed as “better” or in a broad context. If you were asking a more specific question about that grow or species thst might be better received. The best thing to do is just dive in and start doing stuff. Post pics of what you’re doing and be receptive to the feedback. That will teach you a lot more about the species.

Academics can only take you so far. Much of nuance of mushroom growing takes on many different forms. Many a G&MM enthusiast tried to make the leap to commercial farming only to learn 90% of it was shovelling sawdust.
