Cross post from Advanced Mycology: Parasitic behavior in yellow morels.

Fairly recently I ran an experiment to see if there was any symbiotic relationship that could be observed between Morchella americana and Malus domestica. I went into this expecting to see a Hartig net like structure that true ectomycorrhizal mushrooms form around the root ball of their host. I chose apple trees as the partner due to my own observations of apple orchards being one of the best places to pick all kinds of morels in the season. It is also very easy to seed grow apples when they are out of season because the fruit at the store has likely been under refrigeration long enough to crack dormancy on the seeds. Plus apples are delicious and if you don't like them, fuck you.

ANYWAYS, about two weeks ago I planted several apples into a fruiting chamber in a substrate that was inoculated with the morel culture that same day. After a few days mycelium began to fluff up around the point where the stems exited the ground, and I am immediately thinking, SWEET ITS FUCKING WORKING! Well as you can see it it just kept right on growing and now appears to be killing the trees. I scoped some of the mycelium off the surface of one of the leaves and of the tissue of the plant that had not yet been colonized over. My pictures are not the best but you can see the morel hyphae growing internal to the plant tissue. When scrolling the focus, it is possible to see what appear to be micro abrasions and an immune response from the plant to "wall off" the invading hyphae. The colonization has also triggered a reddening reaction on the tissue of the plant, I am not sure what it is exactly but I presume an antifungal compound from the plant or something exuded by the mycelium itself. Another interesting observation here is that the tops of the plants do not really seem to be affected at the moment, I am fairly certain they will also fall to the mighty morel but very odd that it appears to be a creeping death.

In addition to the plant tissue colonization I have also observed a new structure being produced by the mycelium, what it is exactly I am not sure. It looks like a swollen hyphal tip with circular compartments inside.

There is also some spots on and just below the surface of the substrate that appear to be knots. I pulled them apart with razor blades when preparing the slides and they are still heavily interwoven. Hopefully this is it....

Weird and cool. Nice photos. I wonder what the branching bubble of bubbles is and if it's related to the apple takeover. I hope the apples survive and this is just some sort of handshake/shakedown policy by the morel.

The banana shaped macroconidia are a dead giveaway for Fusarium. I would start looking around at F. avenaceum and go from there to nail down the exact species if you care to find out. Otherwise it's fine to just leave it a Fusarium xyz and try again.

Probably not the morel killing those seedlings.

I also see Rhizopus in there too.

So cool, appreciate the knowledge. Even if it's not the results blufuut was going for it's still pretty awesome

I was able to finally spawn those self fertile somatic morel cultures I isolated, they never did make sclerotia, it would seem they are stuck in the conidal sexual reproduction stage so I have high hopes for this new project, I have drafted a very clear schedule for this project based on research papers, this is 1 week after spawning to a 4 to 1 clay sand mix with the addition of pickling lime, they seem to have recovered nicely, next phase is to feed and incubate for 2 months, I placed a strawberry 🍓 in one tote to see how quickly they eat it

I have a vendor culture of Importuna that I can get mycelium to grow on agar, pucks, grain and even sawdust bags.  For the past several years I've tried different indoor fruiting teks that I have read about on here with no success.  I've been dumping these projects in the same outdoor bed with various layers of woodchips/ashes/leaf castings randomly.  This outdoor bed has never fruited either.  Yesterday morning I found a fruit in the gravel path of my garden bed:

This is about 80 feet from my morel experimental dump bed. I'm not well versed on identifying each species but I don't think this is Importuna.  I've owned the property for ~20 years and have never seen a morel at this property and this is an odd location for native one to grow - could this be an Importuna?

No i don’t think so, the irregular pits and color suggest something in the esculenta family plus the distance would make it highly unlikely

Post some more pics when it gets larger but it does look like it's in the yellow morel clade to me

No previous experience with mushroom cultivation of any kind, so please excuse me if I ask any stupid questions. I recently found 2 morels growing in my backyard and I'm wondering what I can do to encourage them spreading around more in my backyard and how to best harvest them in order to get them to regrow later.

The easiest method with little to no experience to encourage them to regrow next year would probably be to make a morel slurry from any of the trimmings or lower quality materials you might otherwise discard or you could just sacrifice a whole one or also taking spore prints and adding that to the slurry will boost it,

There are many videos on YouTube about it, but essentially you just need molasses water and a 5 gallon bucket and a blender, optionally you can substitute the molasses for honey, cane sugar, maple syrup etc as long as you keep it under 4% of the total volume of water

Just blend one up in the blender then add that to the bucket of sugar water let it grow for 3-4 days at room temp then stir it up and pour this mixture on some outside beds you prepared

I’d recommend getting some wood chips and using them to mulch around trees in your yard that morels like to grow under and pour the slurry in the wood chips then add a cup of wood ash to another 5 gal bucket of water and use that to water it in

Keep the wood chips moist over the year and hopefully you get a better harvest next year :super:

I barely understand half of the shit that I read when I go down the morel rabbit hole. Can somebody tell me why this is/isn't "groundbreaking"?

I wanted to start from spores if I ever give this a shot. Noticed rufobrunnea is homothallic so I was looking into single spore isolates when that popped up

No idea if I'm retarded or not. Somebody tell me if I'm retarded
