What is the purpose of roughing up the top of the substrate with a fork? When would that technique be used?

If you harvest a flush and expect the sub has more to give but refuses to pin, the roughing of the surface stimulates new myc growth, which should encourage it to pin from there. Ive only ever had it happen once, but punishing it worked.

Beef uses the sprayer on the sink, which worked like a charm for me.

Thanks, TM!

I'm not quite understanding how the sprayer works, though. We don't spray anything off but only blast it with water?

Just a quick zip across the surface with the sprayer is doing the same thing as a fork. You're busting up the surface myc so that it will stimulate fresh myc growth which should be more willing to pin.

Wait. Premade agar……. Like with the mycelium?

Yah there is vendor I used before that sells it. If its contaminated or damaged upon arrival they replace it for free just have to send pictures. It was decent stuff better than I did with spore and blank agar.

B+ sounds cool I was thinking about Syzygy too because it was sold by a company Terence McKenna worked with in the 1970s. I thought most APE was really fast growing mycelium.

You guys were right. The LC was definitely contaminated. My agar was clean and plates were sterilized properly (I have polypropylene ones) because I did a A2A transfer of 3 year old oyster cultures (they're not coming back to life) and only one of them has a bacterial contam.

But none of the same contam present in my JMF LC -> agar plates

One plate has white fuzzy growth with darker growth in the middle. Other plate has very dark looking growth with some white fuzziness on edges of blobs.

Nope. APE might colonize fast (ish) but you will pay for it with the fruiting and pinning stage.

People with fast APE runs are people who put the work in with agar and got dumb lucky too boot.

But the payoff is worth it

That pressure cooker is also really small, like it might be as tall as your hand. It won't hold enough jars or water to make it worth your time. You'll want something bigger.

The listing doesn't say what psi it will reach. Find one that says it will run at 15 psi.

And :whathesaid: a blow out plug is a safety feature worth having.

Edit: search for "pressure canner" not pressure cooker.

Stovetop PCs work or nah?

You really want a pressure canner, (a Presto or All American eg) not a pressure cooker. But they are usually to go on your stove.

:whathesaid:
The difference in the two is size, in order for it to be called a canner it needs to hold at least 4 qts, these are more heavy duty and hold temps better , cookers are smaller cheaper metal that heat and cool too quickly

I didn't make the LC myself. I bought an LC syringe from a vendor. Plates have been sitting since 12-22-25
