HOLY SHIT, CHILL ON THE CAPS LOCK.

I think from the sounds of things you got bad information and none of this will work.

We especially cannot help you without pictures of what you are describing.

At the bottom of this post is a link to the hitchhiker’s guide to the shroomery.  Click that and read it all tbe way through without skimming.

When using STAKZ strain, would a casing layer speed up fruiting cycle.

Title fix.

Please do not change the Subject line when replying to posts.

I am not familiar with STAKZ, however, if it is a cube it does not benefit from a casing layer.

I dunno what that is, but if it's a cube you grow it like a cube.

Cubensis do not need a casing layer, nor would one speed up fruiting.

They will fruit when they are ready to fruit, not when you are.  This is a hobby that requires patience on your part.

No worries. I think everyone does it at least once. It is not that intuitive to leave the subject the same.

It looks like STAKZ may have some PE lineage. If so, compressing the sub and a good top layer also compressed should be all you need to get a nice flush. True casings can be more harm than help with cubes, especially until you have a fair bit of cultivating experience. They require proper pasteurization and ph balance and really don't do anything for cubes. So skip them until you really need them for things like pans and other exotics.

I wouldnt go so far as to say they dont do anything for cubes, arguing if the juice is worth the squeeze is a different topic altogether.

That i would agree with. I occasionally whip up some peat for cubes just for funzies and i do enjoy doing it for a fer reasons, none of which are for the mushrooms lol

I admit to wanting to play around with more traditional cube fruiting styles.  Throw on some bell bottoms and chucks and fruit on trays of cased straw and manure?

This was the route taken by a noticeable number of people here in 09-10, which doesn't feel like far enough in the past to joke about it being "old" 🤣

The girl I had then was my total package too. Aaaah...glory days.

So on the 26th (5 days ago) I pasteurized some substrate (hpoo/straw/verm) using my sous vide.

I left the substrate inside the ziplock bag I used during the pasteurization (150F). It was left at room temp for 5 days without being opened and didn't have any GE as the ziplock bags was closed. Temps was around 25c.

I'm curious as I don't believe I didn't pasteurize correctly as I done it before and hard to fuck up using a sous vide:shrug:

Was it the fact that there was no GE that made the substrate contaminate or at least what I belive to be contam? See pictures above.

Reason I didn't stress about using it right away is because of what Jakeoncid says in his write-up "The next day I take it out and set on shelf in Lab for the microbe count to Build. I prefer to use bulk that is at least 5 days old. The longer I wait the lower my chances of contams."

Any feedback is much appreciated.

It smelled very strong and has even white dots all over.

Guess mostly I'm curious if leaving the substrate in a ziplock without any GE would be the reason for the contam?:takingnotes:

I do believe that no GE was the reason.  Looks like maybe a yeast.  Always a good idea to give any prepped substrate you’re storing for any period of time GE.  I store my unused CV in ziplocks with syringe holes poked through the bag every few inches even.

Is there any yeast that could survive 140°F?

While I still think it was no GE, it could’ve been a combination of the middle not getting fully cooked.

I’ve experienced this same thing a long time ago when I used to make manure/straw monos.  You can see me explain that I needed to poke holes in my bags Here in the 1/10 edit:

Quote:
EDIT 1/10/14* Now, as for what follows, I used this technique for pasteurizing A LOT of substrate all at once, but I probably wouldn't use this method nowadays.  I am going to leave the operation up so that if you feel like playing around a bit with your procedures, you can see how I did it.  BUT, like I said, I wouldn't do it this way today.  The reason I wouldn't do it this way is because some of the material in the middle of the bags probably didn't get thoroughly pasteurized.  That is why I had to poke holes in the bags while they cooled so that fresh air was available to the material so the parts that didn't get thoroughly pasteurized wasn't given a chance to grow bacteria before I spawned to it.  I would still prepare the material like above^^^^, but I would pasteurize in smaller amounts with less times to make sure all the material was pasteurized properly.

The reason for the edit is because I had problems with bacteria setting in when I didn’t allow for ge after pasteurizing (and improper cooking due to the size of the sub I was cooking).  I’ve said it a bunch lately but it’s a hill I’ll die on… if you want to make sure your sub is properly pasteurized, vac seal it.  Air pockets are a horrible conductor of heat.  I think it’s similar to why we vent pc’s.  Removing the air from the bag so there’s only substrate and water will ensure you get the center up to the proper temperature.

I think it was Tedsdead that shared that info with me a long time ago but since I started doing it, I haven’t had a single problem with my subs or casings being contaminated.  And it just makes sense.. water is a far better conductor of heat.
