Use LibreOffice.

Free and open source office suite compatible with Microsoft Office/365 files. Imports / exports / edits / saves all Office formats for Excel and Word.

Basically a clone for free. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

Pic tax. This 3.5-year old fruit leather-looking dried plate of Z-Strain was NOT able to be revitalized, but I tried.

Oh, I know. But I have no part in that decision where I work. Tried that shit when I walked in the door, no dice.

I'm cleaning up my first ochra culture, and there's a section in the middle that's very fuzzy and tall (almost reaching up to the lid of the dish), while the leading edge turned rhizo. Is this normal or is the middle section contam? ik not the best pic, sorry, still trying to figure out how to get nice pics of plates

Here's some recent T1's I'm proud of:

From what I understand about Ochra, yes they do that. I have a plate that is very similar right now. Rhizo at the edges buy reaching up toward the top in the middle tomentose.

CS works on similar principles but adds another element: the mycelium has to physically force its way through clean agar, which acts like a mechanical filter.
That tunneling not only blocks bacteria, but it also (supposedly) naturally selects for stronger, more aggressive mycelium.

No need for a Biology degree, that right there is the answer. Survival through resilience using non-diluted common sense.

On the bright side, it leaves room for interpretation regarding mycelium and quantum physics. Mycelium parallel realities using a quantum compiler based agar recipe.

Rhizomorphic/tomentose combined growth expressions are perfectly normal with ochernats.

ps,
Clearly not 'Shiitake'. Codenames are just a precaution when traveling overseas.

Halfway and I used 15g agar agar, 15g malt powder, and 1.5g yeast.  Same recipe I have always used.  It is possible I went light on filling that one.  Could that be the cause?

I think I prefer no colored dyes in my agar. They seem to be performing better. Also getting better with making it and pouring it. Made 1500ml and got 62 plates this time.

Some 5 day old plates that were made and poured a few days earlier and a 10 day old plate.

Could be my lens is dirty. The lens protectors I use are cracked slightly and need replacing. I’ll check the plates tonight with a careful eye and report back though just to be safe. Thanks for looking out!

First Plin I’ve ever got! Black Cap Nat/Ochra. This is on a plate that’s going on two months old that I took three 8mm punch samples from this plate and you can’t even see where I took them from. What do I do with the Plin and this plate. It is an original plate inoculated with a MSS on 3/18. I sent two T1 plates to grain and those jars are doing great and on their 2nd shake.
