Re: AGAR ENVY! (Anything and All things agar!) [Re: Jrey16]

I’ve noticed that the Jack Frost strain tends to produce very thin rhizomorphic growth with minimal aerial mycelium. Even after multiple transfers, I haven’t been able to achieve the thick hyphal bundles I’m seeing in your second image. Was that plate a transfer from the first one? I’m wondering what I might be missing or doing wrong.

I'm not very familiar with the HBP strain but just wondering what the inoculation source was?  I would have to imagine LC inoculation?

It was a MSS. I’m going to take a couple of A2A transfers from each plate early this coming week and see what happens from those. So far they look ok, just puffy.

This is not the place for negativity so I don't get what's wrong with Piggy. You rock man, and I love what you said about LC! Truly a 3D grow medium! Just make sure the agar you put in it is 100% clean and boom, no reason not to use it!

Can someone please explain what the heck is going on here? This is a standard agar recipe of agar agar, malt powder, and yeast. It's definitely not contaminated because three of them came out this way and I transferred the others but wanted to keep this one to see if there were any changes over time which there were not. It was mixed thoroughly but colonized this way. I took pieces of the rhizomorphic growth from the two other donor plates that took this form and all 20 recipient plates colonized with rhizomorphic growth only. Any insight from shroomery's finest myco experts?

I discovered a single popcorn grain when cleaning my jars,
I carefully transferred it from the jar it was in onto a plate.
The jar must be at least two years old, I swear to God.

Although it was unlikely, the grain is taking off! I'm very excited.

Here's the original plate

How are the transfers looking?

That’s good to know, thanks Lew!
Guess I’ll send some and see what happens.

I’m starting to see that the mycelium on all the other plates start looking funny as well. At first I thought it might have been the colouring, but it’s acting weird all across the board, even those without the colouring.

I’ve either fucked up badly somehow, contaminating everything, or somethings off with the ELME, Agar or the water. Only thing I’ve done different with this batch as opposed to earlier ones has been dropping the temp to sterilise at 15-17psi and running a shorter cycle. Can’t imagine it’s the latter, as 35min should be good for 700ml in glass bottles.

If anyone has any thoughts, beside me being a dirty fuck, I'm all ears 😁

Maybe try adjusting the nutrition content in the agar or changing the source of nutrition

I have a PDA recipe if you'd like to try it.

I'll get the yeast with my next order, Lew, and I'd love that PDA recipe of yours milkboy.

Will be pouring 30 plates of BRF plates today, with a 2% agar content, to see whether I can get something to happen here, before I get PD and yeast.

😁

I’ve made agar successfully with just gnocchi boil water, vermicelli boil water and even ramen boil water.

Haven’t tried regular pasta yet, maybe it’s not starchy enough.

Moral of the story is, you probably have something in your home you can use as dinner and starch base for agar.

some cyan plates from LC T3 and T2 clone from last harvest. Also fastest clone from a FahtLoc harvest. They look fine right? planned to do some SSLC with them later.
