i’d get that bad boy nice and wet and roll it in coir, and then keep it moist in a tub with a loose lid…could have shrooms blooming all over in a couple of weeks!

Those are actually 2 bad boys.  Thank you for the advice, will get on the coir!

there’s a good pictorial and writeup of the basic idea in the original post on this thread - have seen some killer results from that approach. Best of luck with your grow!

Peace to you, friend!

Thank you flapping_bird!  I actually needed that pointer….I had seen  it before but when it was advised again I tried the search bar and went down a rabbit hole.  Will have some coco coir tomorrow morning and will get to it!

Unto you peace as well!

Hey, that's good that you got such large harvests. You should be good for quite some time haha.

If you're worried that it's under hydrated , you could try watering the sub with a syringe. I just tried that out for the first time a couple days ago and had success.

I feel like if you spray water on the outside it won't absorb any

Once you get thru your stash you've got a whole wonderful world of agar waiting for you c:

That's exciting!

Hey all,

Followed your direction took my blocks to the sink but low water pressure didn’t disturb anything so I just washed my hands and scraped off all the surfaces with my fingers.  Then put a base of prepped coco coir in the tubs and rolled the bricks in coir.  Will continue to update as it progresses or doesn’t progress.

These bricks really were covered in a hard shell of mycelium so I’m guessing, based on the first posts in this thread, that we didn’t open the bags soon enough when they were colonized.  Maybe suffocated?

With gratitude for this resource and assistance!

Got something separating the dino egg and the coir in the bottom? It's going to use energy and colonized it if not, other then that it's looking good

Hi Kloakk,

N, I don't have anything separating the egg and coir on bottom.  I definitely understand how it might colonize though.  Thank you for the heads up!

Any suggestion on what I should use to separate?  Tin foil or plastic wrap maybe?

Foil or a rack should work fine :awesomenod:

Thank you! 🙏

EDIT - I figure I’ll just keep updating with info.  If a new reader of this thread comes in they can go back one page and see where I started.

Quick rundown of the coco coir: following the technique (TEK) in this forum, I measured out about 650 grams of coir in a 5 gallon bucket and poured in 3 quarts of boiling water.  Put the lid on and let it come to ambient temperature for a day.  When I got back into the bucket, I mixed it all up by hand and when I took a handful of the prepped coir and squeezed hard, just a little bit of water squeezed out.

I put about 2-inches deep of a coir base in my 2 monotubs.

I ran my mycelium colonized bricks under cold water in the sink while scraping the somewhat hardened outer layers off with my fingertips, creating a somewhat porous surface all over the brick.

I rolled the damp brick in the coco coir and used my hands to put coir on any spots that didn’t pick up the coir.

I then placed the coir-covered bricks on a piece of aluminum foil in the monotubs, taking care to use enough foil to prevent the brick from touching the coir-pack at the bottom of the tub, but leaving the edges of the coir-pack exposed so it could contribute to keeping the atmosphere humidified.

I hope it’s not too detailed!  Just wanted to clarify for others on some points that were a little confusing for me.  Now, we wait….

Just a little over 24 hours and both cakes are showing activity but one shows a lot more activity than the other.

Sort of looks like the *less* active cake has a slightly thicker layer of coir, but both are showing signs of colonization.

Our setup is a plastic bin with a few inches of water in it and an aquarium heater, then another bin placed on the water with some wire racks on the bottom, with the monotubs stacked on each other because they won’t fit side by side.  So the more active cake is at the bottom of the stack.

The monotubs have filters over the holes in the lids, not caps.  I just took the lids off for pics so there was some FAE as a result.

If anyone has any suggestions or guidance it would be much appreciated!

The pic is a bit cropped because I tried to make a side-by-side….it definitely shows the state of affairs.

Probably more coir on the one with less activity, nothing to do but LITFA

nice! yup, LITFA and time will do the trick. Def don’t need the heater unless you’re well below 70F where your grows are. Best of luck on your grow!

Peace to you, friend!

I appreciate the support, thank you!  Our house is still mid-60s F during the day and often quite colder at night.  Maybe another week or three before we get warmed up.

On another note, but AIO specific, one of our Jedi AIO bags was in desperate need of harvesting tonight.  I tried rolling the bag down to no avail and finally cut it open.  There were mushrooms *all over* the sides.  Only then did it become obvious to me why a tub or shoebox might have given an advantage.  If more substrate were exposed, we probably could have tripled the yield and had better looking mushrooms.

Some pics: ….FYI my wife figured we should tape the sides of our bags after they started pins to prevent light from creating a side-pin issue but it happened anyway.

Side pins are why I went to a fruiting chamber for my first AIO bag.

My 2 cents: there’s nothing wrong with sidepins. They happen & they’re maybe not pretty, but they’re plenty potent and good for drying and using.  There are times when I won’t collect sidepins…like when I feel I have had “enough” of a harvest otherwise, or when I’ve been bottom watering heavily. Otherwise, they’re all just the same fruit!

Peace to you, friend!

UPDATE:

After getting the coir treatment, the Hillbilly cakes quickly colonized but after 2 weeks they were showing little-to-no activity.  Maybe some very tiny pins on the less coired cake, but they were tiny, so I just stuck the tubs in a closet.  36 hours later both cakes are showing a little more pin activity.  I know that moving them to the closet probably didn’t change anything but I respectfully request your input:

-  Was moving them to the closet a violation of the LITFA directive?

-  I already had the filters on the tub but should I have used plugs immediately following the coir treatment?

-  The more heavily colonized cake has MUCH MORE moisture and water droplets on the cake.  Is it too much?

Any advice is, as always, greatly appreciated!
