Looks like those are aborts, pick them so they don't start to rot.

Some of the strongest cubes I ever ate were PE aborts.

I just let them know
I did mention perhaps injecting for moisture or dunking? Any thoughts? Thinking he should push for more?

I'd give 'er a dunk and see what happens. Beef's coir chamber has been helpful for getting a bit more from a sub like that.

It's not something I've done successfully, but all you need is a bucket or container big enough to hold the sub and some water. Weigh it down to submerge, wait 12-24 hours, back to fruiting.

Also, Beef's punisher tek is popular and looks fun.

Yes yes def familar with the punisher tek
As his was also an AIO gone coir egg I’d imagine either the dunking in bucket
Seems like a long ass time though? The thing won’t fall apart?

Definitely keep an eye out, it could take less time. I guess when it starts to feel less bouyant, it has absorbed some water.

Hello! I am brand new to the hobby and unfortunately started with an AIO kit. It did really good in the beginning but has stalled. I read through your write up and am going to try it, I am nervous about how to rough up the outside though. Like how far is too far? I don't want to accidentally kill it.

I’m very much no expert myself, let me start with that, but I did notice the same kind of dark blue on my block on the places I was pulling from and disturbing the mycelium, as well as some black from where spores dropped (that I forgot about and thought was mold lol). From what I’ve seen, trich is more green than blue. Mine turned out to be bruising and has healed as the myc recolonized and repaired the area. From everything I’ve read, a healthy substrate with clean spawn can defend itself really well after colonization, so my GUESS is that it’s ok, but again, I’m no expert, just had similar conditions that turned out to be fine. I wish your uncle good luck!

They are surprisingly resilient. I pop them into a 1 quart Ziploc, fill it with water, turn it over and put it in a bowl. 18-24 hours in there. You can also use a jar like the one you made spawn in.

Keep the clean protocols though, that was the point in which I introduced contamination - see picture ☠️

Two weeks later...

We're ready to harvest my first ever fruits!

Followed the dino egg AIO bag rescue, except I used a double shoebox. Ended up running out of room on the sides, but I'm happy with the results!

Well, I finally got around to finishing all the prep and… The stalled block got a “buzzcut”, essentially. There are a ton, and I mean a ton of pins on there. Brown ones, too, so as far as my knowledge goes they aren’t aborts. Every surface but the top and bottom was covered. I de-bagged it, fork tekked the top as well as anywhere else that was just aborts, and gave it a coir “buzzcut”, then followed the rest of the instructions for the humidity chamber. Hopefully I did the right thing, I just felt too bad to massacre the little guys. They’re trying their best.

The second bag is finally almost done with the first flush, with two guys left to finish maturing and harvest, and then I’ll give that one a dunk, the full punisher and dinosaur egg treatment, and get rid of the stupid perlite in favor of this tek.

Big thanks to Beef for (hopefully!) saving my bag. I appreciate you!

Damn, that’s awesome. Maybe I shoulda punished the whole block. I just felt bad. They’re trying, you know? Reading the rest of the Punisher thread, though, those pins might not be helping me at this point.

Congrats on the JMF, though! I was actually about to do that one next myself. Hope you get a good harvest, dude!

Thanks dude, may the spores be with you! 😂
Yeah I’m worried about the buzzcut block. I’m thinking just pulling them like you did might have been the right move. If they still don’t grow any by tomorrow, I’m gonna pull all the little guys off and coat the whole thing. They’ll still fulfill their purpose as pins in the capsules with the rest of their brethren.

The good news is that the first flush finished on the other guy and coir blimey ‘e’s prepped and ready for ‘is second flush, ‘e is! Just gotta drill the holes for both tubs tomorrow. I’m using the same dubtubs I started with, so absent any last-minute guidance, I think I’m gonna drill the holes on the top tubs and see how that goes. Can always flip them next time.

Eager to get those JMF jars going, and I’m prepping a couple semps jars for myceliated grains as well! Good luck on that PE7! Hope it’s a knockout haha.

Update: So I pulled the pins/aborts on the buzzcut block and followed the tek as written. It got messy, but it’s done. Both blocks are now in their humidity chambers. Ended up putting the pins/aborts in the dehydrator and look at this shit. That’s after I rinsed and strained out all the tiny guys, too!

Hey Beef,

First and foremost I want to thank you for this thread. I’ve learned a ton of the basics since I found this thread a few weeks ago; how to prep my own coir, how to build a monotub, etc.  I too was a victim of all in one grow bags.  I bought a bunch (6 to be exact) when I decided to take the plunge into cultivating mushrooms. I was uneducated, had more money than free time and the AIO route seemed to streamline the process.

I’ve had varying levels of success with these bags, 2 B+ bags that are actually performing really nicely and yielding me numerous (albeit small) fruits. I have 2 bags of Golden Teacher that are too early to tell how they’re going to do, and 2 PE bags which I decided to use your rescue tek on after seemingly stalling out.

I took my two cakes out of the bags, dressed them for school, and tucked them into a tub prepped with a bed of field capacity prepped coco bliss.  Everything was going swimmingly until this week, I was achieving 94-97% humidity in my tub, and the mycellium was colonizing the new casing layer brilliantly.  However I had spots that were starting to turn a shade of blue, particularly where water droplets were falling and collecting on the cakes from the lid of the tub.  Chalking it up to bruising I unplugged a couple holes to facilitate air exchange and left for work today.  Unfortunately when I got home I found that the blue spots I had found the night before had grown and turned green.  I’m not very experienced at this but even I can probably surmise that this is contamination.

My questions are:

Can anyone identify this contamination and its possible causes?

What can I do to avoid this in the future when I move on to my first proper monotub grow? My cakes were pretty well colonized when I removed them from the bag so contamination was the least of my worries when prepping my tub.

Thanks again to Beef and everyone else who contributed to this thread!
