Re: Beef Supreme on: Rescuing Your Fucked-Up All-in-one kit (Or whatever less-than-ideal situation you have) [Re: FireThief]
    #29157120 -

Before I said that I was good because I saw pins, now I'm not sure. I tried contacting my spore source, but since I mentioned the word "grow" they probably deleted my email as I haven't heard a word from them since two weeks ago. If your advice is going to be to do XYZ, please tell me what XYZ is if I ask. I don't have sterile alternate medium, nor any ability/knowledge on how to create some with the equipment I have. I am under an enormous amount of stress and pressure already and I choose these all-in-one bags for their convenience.

Also, wtf is "Tek"? Is that another internet slang term that I missed that is shorthand for technique? Please don't assume I know anything. I have read the stickies in this post, but I do not know if any of them are applicable to me because they do not match my exact circumstances. I have no experience to say well, it kinda looks like my situation. No, if it doesn't match 100% exactly, I won't recognize it. Picture an autistic robot Spock. That is me.

As before, here is my set-up description:

2 all-in-one bags each with different strains inside a medium-large-ish storage bin on a rubber pad to keep them off the heating mat placed below the bin. Thermostatically controlled heating mat at 71 degrees for fruiting, six ventilation holes in bin with fabric filter coverings. Has a small aquarium pump routed through a jar of filter media and distilled water with a HEPA filter in the hose running to the bin. Bin is aired twice daily, was running the humidifier twice a day for a few hours, have since stopped using the humidifier to see if the issue was too much humidity. Small incisions for better FAE made in each all-in-one bag just above substrate level. About 4-5 weeks since inoculation with liquid solution. Growing fluorescent lamp positioned above bin on a 12 hour timer that shines through a t-shirt to lessen the intensity. First time grower.

I have since noticed fuzzy feet on the fruit in one bag and cut the top 1" off altogether to promote FAE. I also did this with the other bag (desperate for anything, anything at all to happen), and the three pins that were in it have now had their caps turn a dark brown / black and all growth has ceased. The aquarium pump has not been used for over a week. There is still condensation within both bags. After cutting their tops off, I have frequently monitored their moisture levels by looking for condensation.

I'll post pictures if anyone responds to ask for them.

For the love of all that is good, help me.

Also: No, I won't heat my whole apartment to the temperature needed for these fruits. It maxes out at 65 in the day, and is much colder at night. I know people before said that these temperatures are fine, but the results say otherwise. The bags were inoculated near the end of January.

Sure pard, I'll try and help ya. First of, the pressure and stress isn't helping anything so might as well curb that.
Secondly, we need to see good pictures to have an idea of what your grow is looking like.

So also man, it really seems you're getting frustrated and I feel for ya. I wrote the hitchhikers guide to the shroomery to try to help as many people like you as I possibly can. I recommend reading at least part one and see if that broadens your understanding.

I hate to tell you this but growing mushrooms is almost never a "do XY and Z and youll get mushrooms".  Its more of an intuitive process and experience is the only way to kindof level up that intuition about what to do at any given time.

We've really worked hard over decades to come up with techniques (teks) that take out as much of that guess work as we could.
You say you prefer all in one kits for their convenience, but how convenient does it feel right now? And the supplier wont help you because they cannot legally implicate themselves in your criminal activity. I know, its a wild relationship and I wrote another thing called "the restaurant at the end of the shroomery" that talks about that in depth. You're welcome to search it out and see what my opinion is about this system.

AAAAnyway.. In the hitchhikers guide i wrote a section called "the rich mans guide to cultivation" and it wasn't mean to be condescending. I should rename it "the busy mans guide".  Its really designed for people that have more money than time on their hands and that applies to lots of my friends.
You might look into that for your next run.

FOR THE TIME BEING though, lets see some pictures of what you got and I will try my best to get you a flush. I mean, it sounds like you're basically either not willing or not able to acquire any of the materials I including in this very TEK i wrote specifically to help the people that struggle with these AIO kits, so I'm not sure what I will be able to do but I can maybe come up with something if I see some pics.

I personally find it difficult to grow at that low of temps too.  I don't blame you there.  Seems like you might not have the financial means to run the heat higher or whatever.

I actually used to live a place with this giant bear of a man as a roommate who refused to turn the heat up above 60 and what I ended up doing was heating up a closet. Come to think of it, thats still basically what I do now. I use a "inkbird" temp controller (widely available and relatively cheap) attached to a tiny little 300w heater.

I mean.  At a certain point dude, this hobby does take some money and some energy. I'll do my best to see if we can find something to work for you...

Well I asked for help, and some of your criticisms are not wrong. Whatever the case may be, here we are. I will read your Hitchhiker's Guide to The Shroomery. Here is as many images as you might like. That was as close as I could get with my germ-ridden phone.

By the way: Love all the Douglas Adams references. Among the greatest books ever written, in my humble opinion. The most recent movie was pretty good too. A shame Hollywood never let that whole series ride.

my dude.  you could sneeze on your phone then put it in the bag and it wouldnt contaminate. youre way past that part.

yeah, it looks like a candidate to rescue though.
since you wont or cant buy any coir, youll need to make a water tub.  get a big tupperware, put an inch of water in the bottom, elevate your cakes out of the water on something... most people use a little grate sitting on jars or somethint.  trying to get your hidity around 70-80%  might get fruit.  you need temps above 65 in my honest opinion.  however you can manage that.  heat mats directly contacting subsrates us a recipe for disaster every time, but perhaps a heat mat set to 70-75 under the water tub wouldnt be horrible.

thats about the best i can come up with given when your circumstances are.

if you really want to get into this, this just isnt the way to do it reliably. buying just grain bags and innoculating with an LC syringe would be way better, then you could spawn that to coir.

you do not need coir to be sterile at all, only sturated to field capacity.  we use boiling water because it seems to work faster.

hope this helps man.  good luck.

Just a reminder, we use coir because it's convenient, reliable, easy to work with, and relatively cheap.

However, cubes WILL grow on just about anything, and if you're already at the "fuck it, I painted myself in the corner, let’s see what happens" stage, then you might as well fuck around and find out.

I just want to make sure I have the right idea here:

Cut the blocks completely out of their bags.
Fill smaller tupperware container with 1" or so of water.
Place grate, blocks, and tupperware container into my larger bin.
Humidify at the temperature it is at now (71 Fahrenheit).

I was aware of not placing the substrate directly on the heating mat. It is hard to see, but in one image you can see they're sitting on a rubber mat that places them about 1" above the heating pad outside the bin.

If your suggestion is just to humidify the blocks, could I cut the bag tops off altogether and use my aquarium pump humidifier instead?

I can try to find coir locally. If I manage to find some could the bin be reused? The substrate will be only separated from the heating mat by the thickness of the plastic bin, if so. And I'm guessing I just place the bricks on the coir? Or bury them?

yes

how small? People use kinda bigger tubs for this
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26601054

no. Just use the water tub

Humidify at the temperature it is at now (71 Fahrenheit).
The watertub IS the humidifier. No need for the pump and all that. 71 is good.

I was aware of not placing the substrate directly on the heating mat. It is hard to see, but in one image you can see they're sitting on a rubber mat that places them about 1" above the heating pad outside the bin.
take a thermometer and measure the temp 1" above the mat. I'd still call that direct heat.  However, Like i said before, If you're just using the mat under the watertub, only heating the water, that might be enough of a buffer/heatsink to equalize temps? A thermometer would be a good cheap investment

If your suggestion is just to humidify the blocks, could I cut the bag tops off altogether and use my aquarium pump humidifier instead?
I would get rid of the aquarium pump humidifer. Cubes dont actually need that much humidity. around 65-75% humidity. Humidifiers tend to just turn things into a bog. I'll say it again, the watertub IS the humidifier

I can try to find coir locally. If I manage to find some could the bin be reused?
I'm not sure what you mean. bins can always be reused. If you can find coir, you'd be making and using a coir humidity chamber rather than the water tub which I personally prefer. I'm not sure what bin you're talking about. You just need ONE bin. A bit bigger is better. 30qt would be ideal

The substrate will be only separated from the heating mat by the thickness of the plastic bin, if so. And I'm guessing I just place the bricks on the coir? Or bury them?

We really really try to discourage heating mat use for so many reasons, but like I say, if you're insisting on using it rather than heating up a closet or a room to 70, I guess do so. Sure, put the coir-humidity chamber right on the mat I guess. Not sure what that will do but you're kindof at that point B traven was talking about. Yes, place the cakes directly on the coir. no need to bury them.

As I said before, Using an INKBIRD controller might be something to consider if you insist on using that heatpad or any other electrical heat source. It has a probe you could use to measure the air temp in either chamber you decide to use.

I'll see if I can summarize this for you. I am giving you two options:

1. A water tub at room temp. however you get it there is up to you.
2. A coir humidity tub at room temp. However you get it there is up to you.

No extra bins. No fans. No tinfoil or whatever you have gong there and I'm not sure  why. No flourescent/led light sitting on solo cups. The normal light in your kitchen there or whatever is fine. If you can read, its enough light.

Focus on two things: a humidity chamber. whichever you want. temps above 70. Nothing else is relevant.

Thank you for the advice, I'll do what I have to to make it work in a north-facing cave of an apartment that has far less light and heat than you seem to think it does.

The 71 degrees was taken by a thermometer attached to a thermostat controlling the heat mat. The sensor was level with the bottom of the cakes. 71 degrees, at the point of the cakes closest to the mat. If you suggest I put the water bowl outside the bin, I will have no control over heat, light, or humidity. My apartment is 700 square feet of open floor plan that gets no direct sunlight. It's either that fluorescent lamp you don't like, or every overhead light in my apartment. The heat pad will be gone, and with it any ability to generate localized humidity in the sealed bin that will also be gone.

Obviously what I was doing wasn't the best, and created problems that brought me here, but there were and are environmental reasons why I did the things that you don't seem to like. I read I needed heat and humidity, I couldn't make my whole apartment like that, and therefore the box, the aquarium pump, and the reflective surface to prevent the loss of radiative heat.

(And no, there is no closet available for use.)

Yep. That's about what this conversation has become. Two people talking past each other with facts about the reality of the situation neither will recognize. Not everyone can live in Louisiana or the Philippines and set a jar of inoculated substrate on their patio and expect a yield.

You need to let the ego take a break for a second. You’re in a thread that exists for the sole purpose of helping people no one else really wanted to help. You’re in the right place but the wrong state of mind. Do you want fruits or not?

Very very few of us live in a climate where we can, as you say, set a jar of substrate on our patio.

Don’t be obtuse. You’re only hurting yourself.

i live in a very arid climate. friends get nose bleeds when they come to visit.

Now, ive taken a lot of time and energy reading everything youve said and carefully responded despite having an incredibly busy schedule  compounded with severe health issues, due largely to the fact that you were literally wigging out and begging for help.

Youve said your apartment was cold, so is mine.  i did my best to give you as many possible alternatives to what youre doing and i have literally no doubt at all that i could make it work in the very same conditions you presently have and ive told you in several different very simple terms how to do so.  Its pretty obvious youre not understand what im trying to tell you.

Ive helped literally hundreds of people become cultuvators over the years and Ive been known for being very patient and easy to get along with, yet youre becoming upset with me.

Im not sure what you want me to say or what you think anyone can do for you here.

sorry i wasnt able to help you man.  the last bit of advice i have for you is to re-read what ive told you as carefully as I have read what youve told me.  read it as many times as it takes to understand what i told you.

i dont have another way of explaining this.

Maybe the longer explanations are confusing you. Genuinely and without malice I mean that.

Put your shit in a water tub and then put that water tub somewhere where there’s ambient light.

Literally just do that. It’s so easy. It’s so fucking easy.

thanks for helping summarize again hob.

im trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.  maybe his apartment is literally below 60 degrees which would technically be a violation of habitability laws in all 50 states.

if thats the case, and he truly doesnt own a closet,  or cant afford a space heater, i said to use the heat pad with the probe.  i said use a thermometer to verify the temp.

i feel like ive exhausted myself with this and this person needs someone with a different communication style because he just doesnt understand me despite being  articulate himself.  im going to step away from this i think.

have a good night everyone.

I’m pretty new at this. Last summer, I had two well-colonized grow bags stop growing after the break and shake. After a few months, I threw them out.

So, last winter, I got nine bags from three different suppliers and three spoor syringes from two different companies.

I opened two most-colonized bags for fruiting a week ago.

The first is now an inert white block. There seems to be contamination. Short, tiny threads stick out, grow a pnhead-sizes dark top, then curl up and die. There are not many of these, but they’re there. Advice is appreciated.

The second bag is pinning nicely.

In the northeast with central gas heating. The way the vents are configured in my current grow space basically ensures that the air will be dry as fuck in the winter, because of the heat blasting, but that particular room will stay pretty damn cold. Definitely dips below 60 in the overnight hours. I still see February as my optimal growing month. When fruiting tubs, I'll take cold and dry over hot and humid any day of the week.

Everyone's got their own particulars, nobody can see exactly what somone else has going. That said, someone on here is growing in a similar environment to whatever you may have. Maybe one day, the witch hunt will end and we can all have little pins showing exactly where we are so that multivariate climate analayses can give new growers in specific places specific examples to follow or things to consider.

Until then, the best you can do is to just give things a whirl and, in the meantime, maybe try not to be a choosy beggar.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, though: I don't actually believe that any temperature recommendedations are based on any actual empirical testing. Even my aversion to growing in warmer temperatures is probably like 60% just being paranoid because the last time I did summer grows was years ago, back when my coir was swampy and my spawn a rich bacterial stew.

And my other ad nauseum talking point about directly heating substrates: This is an exothermic organism. It generates its own heat just like we do. I've never found electric blankets to be very comfortable.

I still think a heating pad is overkill. Insulated box and a lightbulb or something like that should be more than enough, in my view. And that would still just be for EXTREME conditions.
