Question about grow kit (Yeah.......I know......)
    #541274 - 02/05/02 11:35 AM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Hi People,

Well, this is my first post on the shroomery, but I have been around for a good few months researching the fascinating science of mycology.

About 2 months ago, I started to get all my bits and pieces ready to grow some cubes using BRF cakes and perlite for humidification. I had got everything ready, and I was just about to order an Equadorian syringe from mushmush, when a buddy of mine came round who had just got back from Amsterdam. He knew of my intention to grow some shrooms, so decided to buy me a grow kit as a gift.

I Opened them about 1 week ago and put them in their terrarium. The kit comes with perlite, that you put at the bottom of the terrarium and I have been misting them twice a day with a hand sprayer. Now, after 1 week I am getting "white fuzzy stuff" (which im presuming is mycilleum) spreading all over the surface of the kit, which I see as being a good thing.

Now, here's my question............

My terrarium is kept at the bottom of my wardrobe (not ideal, I agree but unfortunatly the way it has to be untill I get a place of my own). I am guessing that the tempreature in my wardrobe is approx 20 deg C. Is this tempreature too low for fruiting or will it just take a little while?? I know that it has only been 1 week but I don't want to mess the whole thing up by freezing the poor little babies!!

The strain I am trying to grow is Cambodian, and from what I have read and heard from others it is slightly more forgiving of temprature fluctuations than some of it's other relatives.

Any answers to this question would be most appreciated. I have tried searching the boards, and although I have got some help, I would like to see if I can get some more specific info on the Cambodian strain.

Thanks in advance people!!

P.S. I love this site!!!!

Cambodian is also "only" a cubensis. 20?C will be fine.

Was that kit purchased from mushroommagic.com by chance..it sounds alot like the thing I bought before I found this website....they give you perlite which you layer on the bottom of a 10 gallon aquarium...on top on the wet perlite your microwaved substrate is poured on...you squirt a syringe on the top layer and cover it until its fully colonized....I did that and I ended up a big cake of green mold..which also started out white and fuzzy....

Thanks for your help Anno. If that is the case, how long before I start getting pinning and the how long after that should I get my first harvest.

Dr Abe - No, That doesn't sound like the same kit to me. I didn't get any syringe with it. It was just a metal container with foil over it. Instructions just said remove the foil from the tray inside the terrarium, spray with water and then just leave it.

If anyone else has any more experience / advice for me then please let me know!!

don't forget, the mushrooms are phototropic, meaning they use light to decide which way to grow, they ideally need 12 hours of light, not bright, just enough to be able to read in. incandescent or even below a window is fine.

Rommstein2001 - I do try and leave the door of the wardrobe open most of the time; they are getting some diffused light, but I wouldn't say 12 hours a day, maybe 6 - 8 max. I remember reading somewhere that they only need a little diffused light per day was necessary (maybe a couple of hours), just to let the mushrooms know which way they are supposed to grow (as you suggested).

Maybe one way of acheiving this is to hook up a bulb to a 9V battery and hang that above the terrarium. From what your saying, the light does not need to have a UV component to it, so this may be the easiest way of doing it.

Noticing today, that the mycelium has very fine needles poking out of it (first stages of pinning maybe???). Will keep you updated.

Thanks for the help guys!!

Those needles usually just mean the mycellium has some rhyzomorphic growth, which is good, means its going healthy. Pins show up as little dense white blobs, then go from there.. good luck!
