You’re doing just fine, friend - all is well.  LITFA is mostly a state of mind - it lets the mycelium do what it does best.

Congrats on the pins! I’m gonna guess that the moisty-moist brick started with more water contained in the sub, but just a guess. For the other one, it’s ok to give it a mist to give it some surface moisture.

Thinking you’re maybe about 5-7 days or so from first flush harvest.  Just keep things nice and steady.

Thank you for the vote of confidence, friend!  I will let ‘em keep doing their thing.  Pretty stoked to see pins on these.  Will def continue updating here.

Had someone tell me light is why I was getting side pins, a TC nonetheless. I know they use light to orient themselves but as for it being the reason for side pins not sure.

Ill disagree. A colony will pin where its suitable just as bees build a nest where its dry or a cat sleeps where its warm.

I don't have any proper lighting so plants can't evin grow in my room n still get side pins I've heard double wrapping tubs with black plastic can prevent pinning though idk 😐 never done it I just looked at it as another vector for contam I didnt Wana add

Saprophytes generally fruit at the extremities of their new growth, think of Fairy rings in fields, so cubes have a natural tendency to side pin in nature around cow pattys and when you confine them to a tub. When you make the tub you have to force the mycelium to top fruit by making the sides of the sub a bad place to fruit. So you reduce the pinning triggers around the sides by packing the edges down tighter than the middle to reduce oxygen levels and using a black liner or excluding light helps because the mycelium uses light levels to decide exactly where to fruit.

My highest ever yield came from a tub I let side pin all the way round. Full canopies look impressive but they don't always weigh the most.

This was many years ago. I'm not sure I even had a digital camera back then but I can show you an experiment I did a few years ago looking in to why it happened.

I grew a circular spawn cake from clone material and planted it whole into a flower pot of CVG about 2 cms under the surface. I then divided the pot in two with a semi-circle of light proof mylar so one half was in deep shade and the other exposed to bright light like the top surface of a monotub and put it into fruiting conditions. Dark side on the left, light side on the right.

So you can see the shaded pins are growing stronger and towards the light like they would if they were growing out from under a cow patty. When they grew too big I had to take the mylar light shield off so I expected them to start growing upwards more rather than sideways but that didn't happen. They kept on growing like the mylar shield was still there.

So you can see that the fruits that pinned and grew in bright light were smaller, weighed less and had hollow stems.

For posterity, i never use a liner, compact all my subs equally, and canopy every single tub in a well lit room.  Typically 4oz per every 2 qt tub.

I follow this thread out of interest, but usually don't post.

In this case, though, I gotta put my $0.02 in, even though I've said it all before 100 different ways.

"Side pins" is a lot like "homeless people" or "skinheads." The terms all encompass a lot more than what people usually mean. People say "homeless people" but they're usually talking about unmedicated schizophrenics and/or people with severe addiction issues. They're usually not talking about the people who work full-time and live in their cars or on a series of couches, even though there's probably a lot more of them. People say "skinhead" and mean "racists," not "guys who rock Doc Martens and Fred Perrys."

In the case of side pins, I think most discussion originates in the phenomenon of a monotub with fucked surface conditions that does the Danny DeVito. Whereas when I talk about how much I dig side and bottom pins, I'm talking about stuff that's reaching maturity after I've already harvested the surface three or four times. And I'm running shoeboxes. I'm also talking about culture lines I've narrowed down until they'll pin if you look at them sideways. They'll pin on the surface of the quart jars if I let them sit around for too long. They'll even pin in the INTERIOR of the quart jars sometimes, just wherever there's enough of a void.

I did liners for a long time, just like I used gypsum for a long time and used to spray my SAB with lysol. At this point, however, I can state my position unequivocally:

FUCK liners. They don't do anything other than increase the amount of disposable plastic you're using. I don't even buy the "it makes cleanup easier" line anymore. Compress your subs hard, and they're typically pretty easy to clean up.

Anyway, Beef, sorry to contribute to the side-tracking, but I couldn't resist.

Carry on.

Should I add a casing to this thinking not enough substrate as it had pins though all aborted first flush n is starting to side pin way more than on the top? Or should I take the top pins off n flip it gently upside down to try to fruit the side pins? It has very few pins on top though a few more r showing up slow though not rlly growing

I on the other hand will argue with anyone, anywhere, about anything.

When you did this you created a microclimate under the blocked out side that probably had a lot more to do with their growth than blocking light.

Also as a bot of science I'm sure you know a single grow does not proof make.

I'm afraid you're going to have to wait until I start my own thread if you want an argument. I thought "A classic demonstration of phototropism combined with how light influences energy allocation and morphology in Psilocybe cubensis." as a thread title has a nice ring to it.
