Over 2.5 year old PE on dried wheat grains starting to recover after 6 days on agar. Pretty stoked to see that this is an option that does work.

Follow up on those 2.5 + year old dried pe grains. Here they are at 15 days just before taking some transfers.

Can't answer any of your questions, but when it comes to how potent they are I guess it can vary depending on the grower. And I will quote nektar61 here "Potency doesn't matter so much. So you have to take 3 grams of a weaker cube rather than 2 grams of a stronger cube. Makes no difference, because if you get good at growing, you'll always have more shrooms than you can use."

So when I read "a cube is a cube" I will instantly disagree, why? Well because to me a cube is not a cube. I have very little knowledge growing this magnificent entity, but I do have some experience eating them... With the mexican cubes I had a very colorfull experience, with Ecuadorian it was a sunset vibe with strawcolored light, with semilanceata(tho not a cube) it's a mexican colororshifting vibe, but more clean and clear with alot of geometric patterns. What I'm trying to say is that potency isn't that important.. What makes me want to try different genetics is to see how different the experience is..

Not that theres much difference between classic cubes anyway...

That may have been true 15 years ago when people started parroting it, but it's no longer true. People are working on selecting stronger cubes all the time.

The Psilo Cup results disprove it. They show a wide range between "classic cubes."

Are we reading the same results?  The top 25 on that list are almost exclusively penis envy derivatives.  "Classic cubes" aren't showing up regularly on the list until their median measurement.

People are working on stronger cubes all the time, mostly with wildcat penis envy crosses.  Even the enigma fin mutation is of the family penis.

I was looking at the wrong year.

Look at this one, the second list that goes back to 7 pages. (I think later years people got really competitive and mostly entered PE variants and Enigma type things):

https://tripsitter.com/psilocybin-cup/

Last page of that you've got lowest  (first number is combined psilocin and psilocybin, that's the one to look at)
Arkansas Landrace 0,19

And
Mazatapec 0,31

that's a 2:3 variation in strength on one page of this. That's very much not "a cube is a cube."

I don't know the names of all the PEs and blobs like Enigma, so went to the last pages.

Page 6 has a
Golden Teacher at 0,55

which is over twice Arkansas Landrace. And well over Mazatapec, to where you'd notice the differnce

Even without those results, I know that I've had non-PE cubes that are half the strength of other non-PE cubes. (That I've grown under similar conditions and dried for 24 hours)

Even with "set and setting" accounted for, I think anyone who's grown and eaten a lot of non-PE cubes knows that "a cube's a cube" is not science.

A cube is a cube unless it's penis envy doesn't mean all classic cubes are the same, it means the higher end potency lines are PE.  This was especially true years ago when it first started getting used.  PE also grew different than other cubes at the time, which all had similar needs when compared to the sensitivity of classic PE.

I would say the pattern of PE derived varieties dominating potency stands to this day.

(I had to remove some of the quotes. Finally got to the rare "more than 4 nested quotes" error. hahah)

I took "a cube is a cube except PE" as saying non-PE cubes are about the same potency. I've heard it used that way.

From reading old posts I think originally it was "a cube is a cube", then someone added "except PE" after PE became more common.

I've seen, even going back a decade, "a cube is a cube (with or without the PE part) as something experienced growers said to brand new growers who got more hung up on "what 'strain' should I grow?" rather than just picking a classic cube and learning to grow.

You interpret it one way, I interpret another way. (And we're kind of hijacking the agar thread)

I won't argue with you on the meaning of some old folkism, but I will argue that not all non-PE cubes are the same general potency (which you don't seem to be arguing against.)

For what it's worth, this sub-thread is missing the plot at this point. I started out with this not on "a cube is a cube" but on the particular post of ThurmanMurman saying

Fair points entirely. I guess we would need to really nail down what the phrase means,bc like you said - there seems to be different ways of looking at it.  I'm also in no way married to what I said about a cube being a cube - that was just what I thought was going on. Im sure it would be a sizeable undertaking to do the necessary testing to pin down the answer, but I'll throw at least $20 in the crowdfund to get us the answers. 🤣

Alan Rockefeller says on the Miraculix site that he likes the tests, and he's told me in a DM last year that the tests are very good, and that the guy who developed them is a brilliant chemist.

In the testimonial section of the Miraculix site, they sent a sample off to a lab, and compare the results.

Lab said 1.08% Psilocybin and psilocin combined.
Miraculix Q-Test said 1.1% Psilocybin and psilocin combined.

That's very close for a home test.
Though Alan Rockefeller's endorsement means more to me.

A cube is a cube because it's not a pan.
It has nothing to do with potency a cube is a cube because b+ and gt have the same growing conditions and pe is different in potency and harvest time  is still just a cube.

Ok, that makes sense, but then what is the answer if someone asks which classic cube strain is most potent? Bc I thought the answer was still "a cube is a cube" and it had more to do with specific genetics and not the variety itself. Again, I'm not taking a position here - I'm just trying to understand.

I couldn't agree with you more.  KISS.
That was my logic behind getting the 4 variety pack (and my curiosity).

Probably the only thing I disagree with on this forum, occasionally is telling noobs to throw it away or just go agar.  But a lot of people like to wade slowly in and going 'backwards' is really good to learn the shit you're going to constantly be thinking about first.  I couldn't believe more then a small percentage come here for the 'mycology' first.  But I could be wrong.

I'm not clear on what you're saying.
Who does that? Tell noobs to throw what away?

The only thing I've ever told someone to throw away here was an agar plate that either had all contam and no shroom mycleium, or so much contam that someone new here likely would not be able to isolate it. Or a bag (it's always a bag) that looks so bacterial I think you'd get sick eating the shrooms.

This was my first plate ever, 4.5 years ago. The green is mold, the orange is bacteria. (it's not a colored agar plate)

Someone with experience told me to throw it away and start over, and follow a known tek with no deviation. I did, and got better ones soon after.

Is there some shroom myceliucm in there? Yes. Could I isolate it now? Yes (but I would not open this plate in my house!) Could I have isolated it back then? No. haha.

We will never know what's the most potent , what's the most potent in your own collection?
I've grow tidal wave that ripped my head off and tidal wave that was kind of meh.
If we tested 100 people's GT's  would every one of them come in at .8 percent?

I've grown GT that was so low in potency they barely worked, and I've grown koh samui that blew the roof off potency wise.  All classic cubes

Really it's just the luck of the draw genetics wise, other than that it's just good growing conditions.
