LoL, Trump was not the first, not even by a long shot.  He’s a reality T.V. President.  Like the Frontrunner for a cheesy 80s band, or a show being put on by whomever. 

Another thing - He didn’t run his own campaign, that’s hypoerbole. 
He had teams of people running it for him, coordinating, managing, serving, setting up, you know - doing all the work so that he could go out there on stage like a good front man or reality tv actor does.    That’s his thing.

And - he also is not the first to be blacklisted loved by the media - since they make ass loads of money off of hating on him and him on them.  It’s an open dirty secret that it’s a co-mutual relationship. 
Legacy media, sure. As, again,he earns gains from bad press as much as good press because any form of exposure through mass media keeps him in the public’s mind.  Associative memory works like that.  Once again, though - not the first by a long shot.

Maybe the first you’re aware of, though.  He certainly ran at a time when such things were already ripe for the picking.  So that was a wise move to rely on any form of exposure, legacy media or otherwise.
