Most Chinese and Indian cars won’t even come close passing modern safety standards. It has nothing to do with batteries.

Yeah, I read an article about some of the crash test scores these Chinese cars get and it's pretty abysmal.  Hella cheap, though.

Fuck that. I'd be stoked if they let some of the really cheap Japanese trucks in

Then why did he impose a terrif instead of banning them, this brand does use better battery technology then normal the lithium cells in say a telsa

What's to stop China trading with Mexico and then Mexico importing the cars to the USA?

The USMCA free trade agreement contains enforcement mechanisms for requiring that a certain percentage of parts and assembly are sourced in North America. A car that is imported duty free from either Canada or Mexico must be assembled in one of those countries using at least 75% domestically produced parts.

Cool thank you, I did not know that. I figured there had to have been something in place to stop the obvious work around.

Outright bans are worse politically, for one.

That pretty much only happens when the are sanctions like with Russian imports or regulatory bans when a specific manufacturing process or material gets banned which results in defacto bans of large amounts of goods

That's what has kept cheap Chinese cars out of the NA market so far, for the most part, safety regulations.

That's a certified wet dream for me...buying a truck that is ready to be customized rather than ripping out OEM parts or rigging shit to work.

Probably political optics. A Chinese car would never pass the safety standards to be allowed on a Canadian road. If you want to find out what it’s like to be squeezed out of a tube, crash a Chinese car.

Does a tariff influence inflation if the tariff prevents the sale of the good in the first place?

Are you saying the item would't have sold because of the tariff? Than that means another good will have to be produced at a higher cost, so yes. It would.

Everything involved with the goods in question are then also influenced by the changes brought about by the tariff to varying extents, too.

Isn't this saying that safety regulations lead to inflation then?

In gopher's example of Canada imposing high tarrifs on EVs from China, the result is China's EVs aren't imported and sold in Canada because the cost is prohibitive due to the tariff.

In the US the Chinese EVs do not pass the safety regulations and so are not imported and sold.

Same result: cheap Chinese EVs are not sold in either country

Temporarily bounding one area of the flow of trafficked goods by cutting off its path, or just making it seem not worth traveling, naturally means those goods need to be transported to the next path of least resistance, or reappropriated and then used for other purposes.  Similar deal really.

But isn't the premise that this causes inflation based on a fantasy that everything is equally available at all times, that demand is high, etc, but tariffs are the show stopper? But if there isn't a flow in the first place, where does the inflation emerge from? What has changed in terms of supply/demand?

US EVs have in some ways dropped in price over time. I'm not an avid follower of this stuff but I wonder if any data supports this notion of inflation in the price of an EV as a result of China not shipping theirs to the US (or Canada)...

Looking for clarification here :yesnod:

You’re answering your own questions.  :oldman:

Ha, but yes, I tend to agree with you on that point.  I’d have to ask someone more knowledge about how all the working parts work together in the equation, so to speak.  Though, from a purely technical perspective you’re correct on that.

I'm not well versed on this topic so I'm just spit balling. But I tend to find some logic in any thinking. I get the logic of tariffs causing inflation on products already in the market. You cannot raise the cost of a good without passing it on to the consumer.

But I see a different logic to tariffs imposed as a way to prevent a goods entry into the market. The absence of something already absent in the market doesn't seem like it would cause inflation. But it also wouldn't drop prices. But I think that's the point. Keep the money local and such to support higher paying jobs.

I suspect the complexity lies in 'retaliation' from those who have tariffs imposed on their goods.
