At this point, I'm wondering if there's something off about my agar recipe or ingredients. Maybe it's not solid enough and the mycelium is embedding in the top layer and looking translucent (maybe the liquid drop from MSS contributed). Not sure!

But so far, these jars are looking as I'd expect them to. Time will tell, I guess.

In the meantime, I'm gonna get my next set of plates going on a slightly different agar concoction. Slightly lower agar/LME, maybe some nutritional yeast.


IME sometimes they don't look good on agar, due to nutrient levels, but on grain or in bulk they take on a different growth. I have a clone that I tried 3 different agar recipes and it was faint and wispy. I went with it and put on grain it was the same but looked/smelled really clean. In bulk is rhizo as hell and colonizing fast. Good luck!

Why do the male and female spores not create hyphe or mycilium in the syringe and only when in food source like grain etc?

Less ingredients at every stage works, but there is some obsession with food coloring, yeast, coffee, even vermiculite and gypsum, which are all completely unnecessary.

You're right. I think the greatest benefit would be to wait till you are high on the shrooms and then look at the agar plates dyed many cool colors.

Spores are genderless, I like this analogy;

If the mushroom is equivalent to a genderless penis, then it could also be compared to an ovary that releases many genderless eggs at once. That would make the air analogous to the uterine tubes and the entire surface of the earth becomes the uterine lining which nurtures the developing embryo (fungal vegetative mycelium)

I recently poured 10 new plates with the exact same recipe, but the sleeve on the left was made with distilled water while the sleeve on the right was done with tap water. They came out very different colors. I’m hoping this was the problem, and my new plates make happy, healthy mycelium. I’m about to transfer myc from a streak plate and a Riptide T2 that struggled along but both managed to show growth.

Here is a silly (noobish I think) question - What do we do with our T(x) plates that have been sampled and moved to a future generation isolation plate? 

I am acquiring quite the stack(s) of stalled germ plates, goofy looking transfer donors that are starting to show their true colors, goofy looking transfer donors that are also showing signs of infection outside of their growths, single grain plates to test a running spawn jar, etc...

It would appear, outside of the fresh transfers that I am letting grow out the other plates are either taking up space or spiking the myc and giving me a cool side show.  Is there any plauseable reason to keep my initial germs and T1/2 plates?

Not really. I use disposable plates, and if something isn’t useful anymore I toss it.

If they've got a bit of contamination I usually toss them, but if they're decently clean, I hold on to them for plate pins..

I've actually had a couple plates that had some sort of contam enmeshed in them, but they still pinned like crazy, so I used a couple plins to start new plates and used the rest to inoculate jars.

I also had an AA+ syringe that was really dirty and gave me a whole batch of contaminated cakes, so I took a tiny piece of the mycelium from a cake to put on agar.. the plate didn't look like it had anything worth transferring, but I let it sit on the shelf and it's now starting to pin...

So, if you want to grab some plate pins and see if you can get a decent fruiting clone that way, it can definitely be worth holding on to some of your old plates... but you may still want to be selective, I've got more Tidal Wave plate pins than I know what to do with. :mushroom2:

In the syringe, there is just sterile water with no food. The little genderless spores wait for their tongues* to taste something yummy. Then they go all out. 🍄

I had a similar experience with unused condiment cup plates left to sit undisturbed for about 15 days, checked on em and they had a perfectly clean appearance. Only theory I could come up with after that much time, was that it must’ve been knocked onto the surface from an inside wall or from the lid while switching shelves.

They’re called sex types and often referred to as + and -. Some fungi have hundreds of sex types, so it’s just easier to call em positive and negative when discussing fusion.

HELP! I am brand new so go easy. I am just wondering if this looks right. I have seen other blue plates being used here and I don't know why my inoculations and transfers have all this darker stuff near the center Vs just white like I see in everyone else's pics.

these are all new inoculations ( 1 week ago ) done with flow hood / syringe.

what is the liquid? I try to wipe out condensation from the plate lid and wipe it with alcohol before putting it back on.

Am I getting too many spores on the plate? some plates that started like these never really grew the thin stringy mycelium just the dense pussy stuff. does it need more room? more time? Do I have contamination?

These are all mold and bacteria.

The wet part is bacteria and the fuzzy growth are various molds, none of which are the mushroom mycelium you want unfortunately.

Your inoculant is very dirty you need a new source of spore

Welcome to the shroomery! I'm no expert but I'll try to help you as much as I can. Unfortunately, they all look really bad. How much are you putting on there? I've never had a clean syringe and it looks like you don't either. There could be a number of things that you got wrong and it's hard to narrow it down but we can try. First I see you are in front of a flow hood. That's good. Next you are using a door syringe. Things you may be doing wrong could be, too much solution, not streaking the solution onto the plate. Third, you could be breathing on the plates but it looks like you are getting contams from the solution by how it's forming on the plate. Check this link out and scroll to "spore germination" section and check out the streaking process. Actual read the whole thing when you get time, and it should help with everything agar. Bod's comprehensive agar
Check the marketplace and see if you can get clean spores on there. Try to get a print in a giveaway or trade for it. I've used a few swabs and prints from there with great success. It seems the members on here get cleaner spores than some vendors have. (I'm not bashing vendors just giving credit to the members on here)We are a very giving community as well so it shouldn't be hard to find something. I hope to have a giveaway myself in a short time.

Wiping the inside of the lid to reduce condensation can easily be a contamination vector. Isopropyl alcohol sanitizes, it does not sterilize. Next time try letting your plates sit for a few more days upside down before using them.. also keeping plates stacked reduces condensation on lower plates on the stack. I usually just use those first and let the rest sit until the condensation is gone.. if you feel the need to wipe them, sterilize some q tips in your PC and use 1 per lid.

This, to me, is quite complex seems, I guess they have to eat then they get strength to hang out with eachother!? or they can't "mate" unless it's in a food environment like they can't date unless they meet at taco bell, then it's on...

If I had to guess it’s because mushrooms normally grow in wet and damp environments like after a heavy rain or whatever. That’s when people find mushrooms. So while the may get hydrated, they don’t quite extend their hyphae until their enzymes or whatever detect food.
