I'm a ziploc guy myself. I know it's clean if it's right out of the zip loc box, and after pouring a sleeve of plates (20)  I typically can get 4 stacks of 4 plates (16) into a gallon ziploc bag and nicely goes into an insulated bag in my fridge.

The 4 remaining I'll throw in a sandwich bag, or use right away.

ok, so here is my attempt to contribute something else than mold pictures and awkward jokes to this community...

I made three different LCs from the same agar clone plate:

2g/L LME


4g/L LME


2g/L LME + 2g/L Karo


the pictures are shitty as usual but the result I found is that there seems to be no big difference between 2 and 4g/L LME. However the 2g/L LME + 2g/L Karo only shows half of the growth compared to the pure LME LCs.

probably old news but I thought I share...

How many days old??

I made a little lc to throw in spur of the moment last week and didn’t want to go dig up the lme so I used only Karo.

I’ve got zero growth after a week but the jar is still crystal clear. It’s oyster too I expected it to blow up.

Apparently the moral of the story is Karo sucks.

those are 12 days, biopsy method, manually stirred twice a day

I wanted to make a pure Karo LC too for the experiment but the Jar blew up in the PC :shrug: wasn't meant to be.

It almost seems that the Karo slows the growth down considering there is still the same amount of LME in the jar. I used to work in R and D so I know this "experiment" doesn't have any scientific value but its still an interesting observation.

Can you guys help me out. I'm looking through Amazon for Agar, do i need "Malt Extract Agar" or "Potato dextrose Agar"?

That's kinda pricey, might be cheaper to just follow on of the many recipes here on the forums.

Quick update on LME agar plates made on the weekend.

This is my 2nd time pouring.

My first time I got all 20 plates with no problems and let them sit for a couple days after pouring to monitor for contams.

This time though, I got two plates after 2 days showing contams... :frown:

The plates that did come out are crystal clear though, pretty stoked with D3's LME agar recipe so far. Can't wait to try transferring to them!

Search for light malt extract powder. Although like he said you can make your own nutrients with tons of stuff around the house.


Wfg it looks like some bacteria got in while you were pouring those two based on the location. I hate when I get bacteria in the agar cuz I never know if it’s from something sneaking in when I poured or if the whole batch is gonna go bad over the next week.

I am still working in a SAB but I have found there are things that will just make it on to some plates (granted I am not the most disciplined/clean) but I would say losing 2 or 3 out of 20 isnt that bad considering the cost per plate.

Is it just me or does this plate look like it has an underlay of bacteria... maybe I’m chasing ghosts..

Looks clean to me.

Idk why but I always get that type of growth with blue plates. It’s hard to describe but after a while I started noticing it.



The myc always seems...flatter maybe. Idk. I could just be crazy.

I hear ya...this is only my second time doing plates. I was in a bit of a rush, and maybe a bit overanxious trying a new agar recipe while trying to also log my efforts.

You're too kind. I guess I got super lucky on the first try on plates, so without a track record I was a bit disheartened losing 2 plates, but you are correct. Thanks for the gentle slap of reality.

I'm pretty sure I recall where things went wrong when I had a moment or two during pouring plates where I had some slight missteps/fumbles and wasn't as smooth as I wanted.

The first time I poured really hot because I was worried about the agar getting clumpy, so I ended up with a lot of condensation along with it being a bit uncomfortable at the start of pour, but didn't feel so rushed because the agar was super liquidy (ugh...low viscosity).

This time I monitored and wait for temp to hit about 120f before pouring, and was worried concerned that I might not have as much time to pour. I had also got a metal rack to place plates on which I hadn't used and it wasn't quite level in the SAB and it was tweaking my OCD...lol. Wasn't as focused and smooth as I wanted to be.

Alright... tomentose or mold? This is A+ from a spore syringe, second transfer, prior transfer looked the same.



I know the pink food coloring can prompt weird behavior, and I've stopped using it since pouring this batch of plates—I just transferred a punch of this to a plate with blue coloring for T3, so we'll see if that makes a difference. Whatcha think, am I wasting my time by transferring it, or is there hope this'll thicken up a bit?

That definitely looks like mold. Its too sporadic. Even tomentose growth has uniformity. I literally just got back from throwing away some bad plates two of which had a very similar looking mold on them.
