7/23: I put the spores to agar
7/27 I nocked up a quart of rye with a pea-sized agar piece (no, I didn't wait long for the agar to develop-- it was grown out the size of a nickel when I did the transfer to grain)
8/14: Grain quart was 100% colonized, but I waited till
8/19: placed 1/2 of the quart into the above tray and cased, and 1/2 was used as spawn into my mycobag.
9/1:  First pin noticed (the one on the bottom right) (40 days from start)

So as of today it is ~45 days from the start of the project

Well done, coAsTal! Below is a picture of the second flush of my P. subtropicalis 'semperviva' grow. The first flush aborted prematurely due to a heat wave that ended a week or two ago. Even though they grow in Mexico, they don't seem to like temperatures of +35°C (95F).

They're growing in an unmodified tub on a pasteurized substrate of wheat straw with a small amount (5%) of homemade vermicompost, cased with 50/50+. They took about 1,5 weeks from pin to mature fruit. the oldest ones seem to be sporulating so I will try and take some prints soon. Maybe I will need to leave them mature a bit more though because the gills aren't showing a lot of spores yet, and I've heard they take a long time to really start producing/dropping them.

I tried one tiny aborted mushroom from the first flush as a microdose, but it was already too much for that purpose since I had slight visual distortions etc. So these are potent!

Have you done any more experiments with 100% vermicompost? I remember you were messing around and had good results before.

Not really. I was planning to cultivate some Panaeolus again this summer but had a lot of contamination issues on agar with these and old prints that wouldn't germinate anymore etc. I have some P. cambodginiensis spawn ready but I was planning to try the same substrate as described above. Maybe there's a little spawn left over for experimentation though. I do think it's not ideal to use 100% vermicompost as it gets compacted easily and turns muddy when overly wet, so I think it would be a problem to replenish with water once it starts getting dry.

I haven't succeeded in fruiting P. tampanensis yet, but I usually take P. mexicana fruits or sclerotia as microdose. one or two dried mature mushrooms of the latter is a good dosage for this. I think if I took that same amount of P. subtropicalis, I would be tripping..

Thanks PD-- you have a stellar flush there man-- I can only hope mine gets me a few solid grams dry compared to that masterpiece!

I know my little cased grain tray will mainly put out small fruits, but that's OK-- I did it that way for speed and ease, not ideal yield.
Here it is now:


I'm going to let my Semp. Mycobag continue to consolidate through this week-- it's been at 100% externally since the past weekend already-- and I'll case it and put into a FC probably Friday, Captain Future style.

That's the one that I have the highest hopes for, as there's a LOT more sub for it to eat off of. Here's to hoping!!

Would love your appraisal of your fruit potency if you know it-- seems a very wide variance depending on who you ask.

There are several caps dropping spores now and are ready for printing. They have very light spores and don't leave much evidence that they're dropping and the gills don't darken much either. I wouldn't leave them much longer.

Making up some coir/humus compost/verm/little sand/jiffy mix sub bags for this and some zap spawn. Not sure what’s best just going through the trials at this point
