A less-exotic way of drying ? ::

I looked @ the MMGG for how to dry mushrooms & was wondering ...

is there a less exotic way of drying the mushrooms? In this, I mean that I do want to use desiccant to help it dry [instead of air drying] but is there anyway to do this in a container without using all of those wires to divide up the sections in the container?

Afterwards, is it best to keep the mushrooms in a glass container? or a plastic container?

and in the freezer? or just in the cabinet?

should I place a bag of desiccant in them also when storing?

a very easy way of doing it is to fan dry for around 24 hours. then get yourself some epson salt, it can be found at most pharmacies, put the salt in the oven at a mid level temp. and cook the moisture out of it. then just put the salt in a plastic box w/ a lid, get a some type of screen to raise the mushies off the salt and put your mushrooms in there.

Couldnt you do the same with those little silica gel things that you find in coat pockets. I guess the Epsom salts thing would be more practical though.

by air drying it 1st [instead of putting it straight in the box w/desiccant] do you lose any of the potency ?

I would prefer using desiccant instead of the salt, since i already have the desiccant :wink:

personally i would fan for 24hrs & then place in a dessicant chamber (airtight container with mesh to separate desiccant from shrooms

do you need to place a towel in between the desiccant & the wire mesh?

is there anything else that can be used [with the same efficiency] as the mesh? paper towel? foil? etc. etc.

does the water just absorb into the desiccant? what if there's too much water in them? how much desiccant do you put into the box?

Lowes Hardware store sells 7 rack De-Hydrators for $30. I've havent used mine yet, but heard they are quick and easy.

the problem is .... i don't own a fan :frown:

would it be just as effective to air dry it [w/out fan] & then go into the desiccant?

would leaving the mushrooms on an open window be good? or would that expose it to contams ?


does the desiccant need space below it, for the water to drain into? or can this process be done with just pouring the desiccant in the container & just letting it soak up the water?

The only way you could decrease potency would be to expose your cubes to heat or UV light.

About the fan.....just go out and buy a cheap one, they're all over the place :smile:
