Thank you for the reply man, really helped all my individual worries. I've been trying this for months but I'm determined now. I got a 145l SAB and an IR thermometer on the way, should help. Do you mind if I message you for any specific questions as I got more help from you than anyone I've tried before.. Thanks again and for the tips.

When doing transfers I work in a sab. After cutting out my wedge I can't seem to get the wedge off my scalpel when placing it into the new dish. Ive tried mashing, twisting, pulling and pushing but it's just stuck.

My other hand is holding the lid to help limit contam from landing on my plates.

So this is the question

Should I drop the plate and use another tool to push the wedge off the scalpel? Or should I make the agar thinner? I've been using 2% and its been great but these transfers give me a lot of anxiety

I find that the best transfer method for me is to cut all the pieces, with a good overcut, so it is free. . .

I stick my blade point just into the side of the pieceat the cut edge on a downward 30° angle, just the tiniest bit, as ya know agar is sticky shit. . .

I then drag gently on the receiving plate and for stubborn pieces cut into the receiver so the wedge falls off. . .

Instead of thinner agar, make it thicker so you can cut into the receiver completely leaving The transfer on the surface. . . Not sure that is described well. . . But it how I do it

I usually stick the smallest bit of scalpel I can into the wedge and then usually I can just set it down and it comes right off. If it gets too deep in the wedge I angle it so the point of the triangle wedge is facing down and use that to drag it off.

Sometimes cutting into the plate as you place the wedge works too. You’ll figure out your own method soon enough it’s just a matter of practice.

I use the side of the lid to my plate to gently take the piece of my scalpel. I know some people would say that harbors contams, but I’ve done it like that since I started agar without much contams. *knock on wood*

Yeah it's finicky- depends a lot on the geometry of your cuts and blade, and size of the transfer. Like the others say, keep trying different methods and you'll eventually find something that works consistently. Gummier agar can cause its own problems, but might be worth a try.

I often get the scalpel completely under a wedge, rather than stabbing it. When cutting a wedge I make two radial cuts with the scalpel blade perpendicular to the plate, then the last with the blade at a low angle (I think this is what Bobbit is saying). This gives a slope that allows you to get under. Just be careful not to drop it on the way

I bend a 90 degree on my scalpel tip, helps cut pick up and drop.

Hey Crackatoa
Do you heat the blade to bend it and do you have a pic you can share? I have been occasionally resorting to using the lid to scrape with particularly stubborn transfers. Drives me crazy when that sticky little bugger won't let go.

That’s funny I just started bending my scalpel tip also. Did it on accident actually then I thought it would be a bomb idea to scoop up t’fers .

Same, except I use gallon bags and fit 16/17 in each.

I find wrapping tedious, so wrap once is the way to go.

The first time was accidental, after that I've been bending them. I've never used heat, it's usually after I've used it a couple times. I've gone to the #7 scalpel handle now.

Love it. I bet that is great for transfers. I am still using exacto blades and am afraid that they are too hard and will shatter if I try to bend them. But I will give it a go. I have some scalpels in my wish list, so if the exactos fail, I know what to do next. thanks!

If it snaps, heat the next one and give it a try. Works great for transfers.

Mine bends at the tip just from repeatedly heating it and cooling it quickly in the agar.
