I know, that's why I replied to this post - so I could follow the thread. I was wondering if there was a way I could follow the thread without having to reply. Some sort of subscribe function would be nice. Maybe voting on the post will make it come up under my threads?

Thank you to all for replying to my post and showing interest.

Im still at a loss to what they REALLY are but have nontheless done my best to take some spore prints.
Im going to try add some more mulch and possibly some woodchips to establish them there (hopefully)permanently... and mushroom spirit willing they will magically appear again.

In the mean time Im trying as best I can to learn the correct procedures/techniques to grow my own.

Have tried a few times before in the past - but all tries have failed due to contamination.most likely due to not being sterilized properly.

Hopefully with all the great information available from fellow members I will be posting up some pics of my own first successful grow...or be asking for help on my faliures...haha

Personally, I get great success cultivating wild varieties using Petri dishes. It's an inexpensive method, & you can get around 20 dishes from one pressure cook, afterwards you're well able to spot which ones are contaminated and discard those.

This is psilocybe ovoidiocystidiata, nice find,  they've been showing up in South Africa for a while now.

Have those finds been posted on here or documented in some way? I searched but only found a thread discussing the similarity of the two species.

I remember there was a find of P. cyanescens from South Africa a while back, too, which apparently was
also suspected to be P. subaeruginosa - if I'm not entirely mistaken. Interesting nevertheless.

P. ovoideocystidiata hasn't turned up outside of North America.  This is Psilocybe subaeruginascens.

I do believe both of these species mentioned in previous posts are on record as been collected in South Africa ....although not at all common.
Looking at various pictures of both species - I can see similarities in both-however with my limited knowledge of wood loving psilocybes I would not be in a position to rule one out over the other.
My main objective is is to hopefully maintain the location for future flushes and preserve this variety via spore prints.
Thank you to all again for showing interest.

Alan Rockerfeller is an expert in the genus Psilocybe, he studies them for a living, and I don't know of anyone who would know more about the genus than him. So if he says that P. ovoideocystidiata hasn't turned up outside of North America, I would take his word for it.

Are we sure those 2 aren't the same thing?

Alan, you're saying that the observations posted on mushroom observer in Germany,  Switzerland,  South Africa and 1 in Australia are wrong? I could almost swear that you posted an ITS of ovoidiocystidiata from South Africa and the one in Australia has an ITS sequence posted with the observation that you performed, but that could have been a cultivated specimen judging by the pictures.
