Magic Mushrooms of Japan

Hi all, my genetically modified chimpanzee is venturing to japan for a while in the not too distant future. (in an alternative universe where everything is legal of course)
He is aware of the recent stance the Japanese government took on psilo(cin)cybin containing mushrooms, and that the mushrooms are a very sketchy subject at the moment. To the best of his knowledge even though the government has made them illegal to posess and sell, there are many stores still doing so, under the guise that they are 'not' for consumption. He does not want to purchase anything from these price gouging quasi-law breaking dodgy people. Because he has heard that people have been busted for such things, even though they are for sale. But this does not rule out finding them for himself, he has heard of a few mushrooms that grow in japan, and seems to think that 'panaeolus papilonaceus' may be worth a look...even though it's doubtfull. Anyway he'd just like to know what other people thought of this, wether they have been to japan and taken a look around for any psychotropic (sp?) fungi, or if they know anything that my chimp friend doesn't it would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks.
EDIT: Oh and I've also heard that 'P. subaeruginascens' grows throughout Japan, does anyone have any info on it? All I can find is it's name in a list of known psilocybian mushrooms.

Stamets lists at least three interesting species from Japan in Psychedelic Mushrooms of The World:
Psilocybe argentipes, Psilocybe venenata, and Psilocybe subcaerulipes.
Subcaerulipes can be found from May to September in moss-covered soil, or under pines in the forest (near Otsu City, Shiga-Prefecture).
Venenata prefers habitats similar to Azurescens...dig around in bamboo forests, disturbed habitats, etc.
Argentipes has silver patches of fibrils adorning the stem. They are found along trails in the forest, underneath or nearby at least three species of trees.
All of these species are suspected to be highly active. Not sure of the legality of picking mushrooms in Japan though. At least you won't be hunched over in some cow pasture.
I'm too lazy to reproduce all of Stamet's info here. Pick up the book I mention above (or check it out from your library if possible). It is very useful.

Yeah thanks for that liftedoff, good idea in theory but I like many other people here do not break the law, or atleast thats what I'm told It's not like I'm that desperate to trip or anything, my intentions were more just to get some info on what kind of 'myco-flora' (probably isn't a real word but you get what I mean) there is in Japan.
But again thanks for the input, as I know you were only trying to help.

Actually myco-flora is a real word!
Wow, what are the odds?!
On another note, MJshroomer - You mentioned that Gymnopilus aeruginosus grows in Japan, do you (or anyone else for that matter) have any more information on this species?
I found THIS and they look absolutely amazing, I'd be very interested in finding some even just for research purposes alone.

seriously...if your talking abuot not wanting to break the law, and then your doing mushrooms which IS illegal (unless your from some country where it isnt)...it dont make any sense
i kno its breaking the law...but sneaking it over in capsules is prolly the chillest most descreet way of getting mushrooms into japan..i plan on doing that this summer when i go to Tokyo because tokyo would be such a nice city to trip in...cool parks, lights, good lively attitude, fine women, beer and ciggerettes sold in vending machines AND BUDDHA TEMPLES!!!

I'm teaching English in Japan next year...hoping the scene is pretty good. From what I've heard they are still ridiculously easy to come by.

A sailor just got 8 yars in japan for ordering shrooms form Nederlands.
They are highly illegal, but grow in Japan. P. venenata and P. argentipes are common during rainy seaason. Hongo has two volumes (in Japanese) of Japanese Shrooms, He includes good photos of psychoactive species.
You do not want to get caught smuggling shroom capsules into Japan. IF they bust you you are fucked. Especially if you do not speak the language. Paul McCartney almost spent years in Japan in jail for an ounce of pot because someone with him snitch.
They do heavy customs checks thanks to 9/11
